Description
July 21, 1925.
E. J. FLETCHER JAR HOLDER Filed Feb. 4, 1924 l/vmvmn muunlnsrpnm Patented July 21, 1925.
EBLA'ND JAMES FLETCHER, 0T3 DRUMI-IELLER, ALBERTA, CANADA.
J'AR HOLDER.
Application filed February 4, 1924.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERLAND JAMES FLETCHER, a subject of the King of Great- Britain, and resident of th town of Drunr holler, in the Province of Alberta and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain 'new and useful Improvements in Jar Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in jar holders and the objects of the invention are to provide a simply constructed, adj ustable jar holder for more easily removing the rings from fruit ars and the like without breakage.
Further objects are the provision of a adjustable holder of this character adapted to fit any size jar without removing the holder from the jar,
The essential features of my improved device consist of a strap or band of flexible material which can be adjusted to any size of jar or otherwise and which is, therefore, applicable not only for opening sealer caps of any size but also for use on headlights, grease caps, pump caps, and generally as an adjustable wrench.
"With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists essentially in the improved device of this character, an embodiment of which is described in the present specification and illustrated by the accompanying drawings that form part of the same.
Referring now to the drawings, in which like characters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in each figure- Figure 1 is a perspective View of an embodiment of my device fitted on the ring of a fruit jar.
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view.
In the drawings, A designates the holder as a whole and B a fruit jar. The holder A, in the embodiment here illustrated, comprises handling members and 11 of any suitable pattern and pivotally connected to one another at 12, the inner ends of these handling members 10 and ll being formed at 13 and 14 with suitable eyes to pivotally engage with links 15 and 16, the link 15 being single and the link 16 being divided by a cross bar 17 into substantially two equal portions, one of which is provided with a serrated edge or teeth 18.
Fixedly secured at one end to the link 15 Serial No. 690,644.
is a strap 19 of any suitable flexible material and of any suitable length. This strap is designed to fit around the object to be clamped and is designed at its loose end to engage with the lower compartment or porthen held at the adjusted length by means of the teeth or serrated edge 18 until the object for which it is used is attained, when the strap can be readily detached from engagement with the teeth and taken oil the objectwhich it has been clamping.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the combination with the flexible strap pivotally secured at one end to one of the operating handles and adjustably and pivotally .eenred at its loose end to the other handle, provides a simple, effective and adjustable holding or clamping means for jar tops, caps, hubs, and the like, to which an ordinary wrench has heretofore been applicable.
Moreover, it should be understood that I the strap or flexible clamping means may be made oil any suitable material, not neces sarily flexible, as long as it is adapted to be adjustably and pivotally secured to the operating means.
its many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claim, con structed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all 1natter contained in the accompanying speci- :tication and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limitingsense.
What I claim asmy invention is:
A fruit jar holder comprising a pair of pivotally connected lever members, a single link and a double link pivotally connected respectively to said members, a strip of flexible material permanently secured at one end to the single link, the other end being loose to engage with the double link, and toothed means in the double link for retaining the strip when tensioned or slackened.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two Witnesses.
ERLAND JAMES FLETCHER.
