IMPROVEMENT IN ANKLE SUPPORTERS AND F ILLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,537, dated October 7, 1873; application filed September 25, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL SILBERSCHMIDT, of the city and county of vBaltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new and Improved Ankle Supporter and Filler; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the double supporter. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the single supporter, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the invention applied to a human leg.
Similar letters of reference in the accompanying drawings denote the same parts.
The object of this invention is to combine an ankle supporter and pad in one simple, cheap, and convenient article of manufacture; and to this end the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, which I will now proceed to describe.
In the drawings, A is an ankle supporter and pad or filler, shaped for attachment to the rear part of the leg. It is constructed of stiff leather lined with morocco, cloth, or other material that is soft and absorbent of perspiration, and faced with morocco or other suitable fabric. The ankle supporter or filler is made to extend at its rear or back end nearly to the heel of I the wearer, and also to surround the sides of the ankle in order to support the latter. It also extends upward nearly to the knee, and
is made convex opposite and in rear of the calf straps D, which hold it upon the leg, and
when thus held it both gives a comely shape to the limb and also supports the ankle against spraining and turning to the side.
B is a front piece, made of like material with A, and connected therewith by elastic straps O. This may or may not be used with the part A. The two together more perfectly support the ankle, and also make a very good splint, but they are more cumbrous and uncomfortable than the pad A alone.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 5 As a new article of manufacture, a combined ankle-supporter and filler or'pad, composed of stiff material and of a length and shape to fit a both the rear and sides of the ankle and the calf.that is to say, made with an inwardlycurved and pointed lower part and an outwardly-curved upper portion, substantially as and for the purpose described.
SAMUEL SlLBERSC-HMIDT.
