To all whom it vim/y concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. 801001 a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Wheeling, county of Ohio, and State of est Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pickling Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates broadly to-pickling apparatus, and more particularly to a mechanism for pickling metal plates or sheets.
, v The primary'object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of ap paratus for-effecting the cleansing of metal plates preparatory to applying to such plates a coating of metal, as tin, terne, or other metal or alloy.
A further object is to provide a pickling mechanism including, in association with a vat or tank for containing the pickling fluid or liquor, a carriage adapted to be suspended within such tank, and a plate-carry ing rack adapted to be removably mounted on said carriage with the thereby-carried plates submerged in the fluid of the tank; saidcarriage being reciprocable horizontally for producing a more or less violent agitation of the fluid about the plates, with. the end in view to accelerate the washing and securing action.
A still further object is to provide, in an apparatus of the character mentioned, guide means whereby the introduction of the rack in seated position upon the carriage is facilitated.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the features ofconstruction, arrangement of parts and combinations of elements which will hereinafter be fully described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a top plan view of the invention with the plate-carrying rack removed;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of a motor and power transmission adapted for imparting reciprocating motion to the carriage;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section, partially broken, taken substanti ally on line 8 3, Fig. 41-, and showing the rackin place on the carriage; and- Figure is an enlarged transverse section on line H, Fig. 8.

tank or container for the pickling fluid, said walls belng constructed of any suitable material, as concrete, while the lining is preferably of a material which will not become unduly affected by the acids ofthe fluld contained by the tank.
Mounted upon the opposite side walls of the tank adjacent to each of the opposite ends of the latter are longitudinal trackways 3 upon each of which'isdisposed'for travel a small truck consisting of a plurality of alined rollers -4= journaled in a' frame which consists of rigidly connected side bearlngs 5. Said trackways, which are preferably carried by sill-like members 11 mounted upon or embedded in the upper portions of the side Walls of the tank, are made of the requisite length to provide for the travel which is required of said trucks, as will hereinafterbe explained.
Permanently mounted upon said trucks is a rectangular reciprocable framecomprisingside members Gand end members 7 said side members carrying on their under sides bars 8 which ride upon the rollers 4, said bars being located similarlyto the trackways 3 and preferably being of greater length than that of said trackways, as shown.
The sidemember 6 of said frame, as herein shown and. as preferably constructed, comprises a castingofU-shaped cross section disposed with its open side outward,
vertical strengthening webs 9 being provided intermediate the top and bottom walls thereof. An inwardly extending lip 10 formed approximately in alinement with the bottom wall of said casting overhangs the upper edge of the adj acentlining 2. and has a downwardly and inwardly inclined top surface for draining into the tank fluid which drips upon said surface from the rack and from the plates which have been treated as the latter are elevated from the tank.
Depending within the tank to a point near the bottom of the latter are two relatively spaced hangers of U-shape designed to serve as supports for removable transfer racks by which the plates are carried. Each of said hangers comprises opposite channel members 12 having vertical portions 12* located closely adjacent to the opposite side walls of the tank and horizontal bottom portions 12 which meetmidway between said vertical portions and which are rigidly connected at midway point. A, longitudinal connecting bar or beam 13 has its opposite ends attached. to said hangers at said midway points, and suitable cross-braces, as 14f, are interposed between the vertical portions 12 of the two hangers, as shown.
The vertical portions 1Q of said hangers constitute guideways for the reception of laterally extending arms or tenons 15 carried by the horizontal bed 16 of the transfer racks hereinbe'lore referred to. The upper end of each of said portions 12 is curved outwardly and rests upon the top of the adjacent side member 6 of the reciprocable frame, being rigidly attached to the latter, as by means of bolts. To facilitate introduetion of the tenons 15 in said guideways the plate-carrying rack is lowered by a crane, the said upper curved ends of the vertical portions 12' are flared to provide a wide hopper-like mouth 12, as shown.
The rack comprises the horizontal bed 16 hereinbefore mentioned,carrying the ten ons 15, which latter not only serve as guides for travel in said guideways, but also as anchors whereby, during reciprocation of the carriage constituted by the reciprocable frame and the depending hangers, said rack is maintained in fixed relation to said carriage. Rigidly mounted on the bed 16 is a plurality of longitudinally extending parallel rows ofupright rods or posts 17 be tween which the plates to be treated are mounted on edge in lengthwise position.
Reciprocating motion is communicated to the carriage in any appropriate manner, as by means of a pit-man 18 having one end pivotally attached to lugs 1.9 formed upon one of the end members 7 of the carriage frame and having its opposite end mounted upon the wrist-pin 20 of a crank-arm 21 carried by a gear-driven shaft 23, said arm, wrist-pin and pitman being employed to convert into reciprocating motion the retary motion of said shaft. An electric motor 22, or other suitable source of motive power, is employed for imparting motion to said shaft.
An upright carrying member or bail 24 of inverted V-shape is attached to the bed 16 at each side of the latter, the ends of its opposite arms being connected to said bed in a suitable manner, by means of clevis members 25. Eye. 26 in the upper ends of said bails 24; are adapted for the reception of the chain hooks of a crane by which the rack with its load is lifted into and out of the tank.
\Vhat is claimed is- 1. A pickling apparatus comprising a tank, trackways carried by the side walls of said tank, a carriage permanently mounted for travel on said trackways and including U-shaped hangers depending within the tank, a plate-carrying rack adapted to be bodily lifted into and out of seated relation to said hangers, and means for producing reciprocatory travel of said carriage,

A pickling apparatus comprising a tank, trackways carried by the side walls of said tank, a carriage permanently mounted for travel on said trackways and including U-shaped hangers depending within the tank, said hangers having the upright side members thereof of channel form to provide guidcways, a plate-carrying rack removably mounted on said hangers, said rack having tenons received in said gnideways, and means for reciprocating said carriage.
3. A pickling apparatus comprising tank, tracliways carried by the side walls of said tank, a carriage permanently mounted for travel on said traekways and including Usha-ped hangers depei'lding within the tank, said hangers having the upright side members thereof of channel form to provide guideways and having the upper end of each of said members flared outwardly to form a hopper-like mouth, a plate-carrying rack removably mounted on said hangers, said rack having lateral guide members disposed in said guideways, and means for reciprocating said carriage.
4.11 pickling apparatus comprising a tank, a carriage including hangers depending within said tank, said carriage being mounted for longitudinal reciprocatory travel with respect to said tank, said hangers embodying vertically disposed guideways, a plate-carrying rack adapted to be bodily lifted into and out of seated relation to said hangers and having guide members receivable in said guideways, and means for imparting reciprocating movements to said carriage.
5.1 1 pickling apparatus comprising a tank, trackways at opposite sides of said tank, wheeled trucks mounted for travel on said trackways, a frame superposed on said trucks, hangers carried by said frame and depending within the tank, a plate-carrying rack for seating on said hangers and bodily removable from the latter, said hangers and said rack having cooperating means for guiding the latter to and from seated relation to the former, and means for producing reciprocatory travel. of said frame.
6. A pickling apparatus connprising a tank, trarkways at opposite sides of said tank, wheeled trucks mounted for travel on said trackways, a frame superposed on said trucks, hangers carried by said frame and depending within the tank, said hangers including oppositely disposed upright channel members providing guideways, a plate carrying rack adapted to be bodily lifted into and out of seated relation to said hangers, said rack having lateral guide members receivable in said guideways, and
means for imparting reoiprooatory travel to said frame to effect longitudinal reciprocation of said rack Within said tank.
7 A pickling apparatus comprising a tank, trackways at opposite sides of said tank, Wheeled trucks mounted for travel on said trackvvays, a frame superposed on said trucks, hangers carried by said frame and depending Within the tank, said hangers including oppositely disposed upright channel members providing guideways, said members being flared at their upper ends to provide Wide entrances to said guideways,
