C. E. G ALBREATH. PORTIERE ROD. APPLICATION FILED JAN,24, 1921.

CHARLES E. GALBREATI-I, OF CHANUTE, KANSAS.

naeaaav.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. GAL- BREATH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chanute, in the county of Neosho and State of Kansas, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Portiere Rods, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in portiere rods adapted for use in connection with a door or window frame.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a portiere rod which is simple in construction, cheap to make, not liable to get out of order, which eliminates the use of nails, screws or the usual pole sockets, which will not scratch or mar the door or window casing, which adapts itself for doors or windows of different widths, which can be quickly and easily put up or taken down, and will reliably hold itself in operative position.
A further object of my invention is to provide a novel portiere rod having two members slidable neatly fitted one in the other in a manner such that when the inner rod moves outwardly, a partial vacuum is formed in the tubular member, thus preventing the members slipping accidentally apart when they are being handled.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the preferred embodiment of my invention,
Fig. 1 is an elevation of a portion of a frame having my improved portiere rod mounted thereon.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged horizontal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the different views.
1 designates an outer tubular horizontal member having neatly slidably fitted therein a horizontal member 2, which may also be tubular.
3 designates two caps respectively mounted, preferably by threaded connection, on the outer ends of the members 1 and 2. The caps 3 respectively close and support the outer ends of the members 1 and 2, so that when the member 2 moves outwardly in the member 1, a partial vacuum is formed Specification of Letters Patent.

within said members, thus preventing them from sllpping accidentally apart when they are being handled.
A small bleed hole 4 may be provided in one of said members, as in the member 1, for the purpose of slowly admitting air so as to permit the rod being extended or contracted.
Mounted in the member 1 is a coil spring 5 which bears at one end against the adjacent cap 3 and at its other end against the inner end of the member 2. The tension of the spring 5 normally forces the member 2 outwardly so as to cause the caps 3 to be forced tightly against the jambs 6 of a door or window frame.
For the protection of the jambs 6 against scratching or abrasion by the caps 3 and to enable the latter to reliably hold their proper position against the casing, the outer side of each cap 3 may have attached to it by cementing or gluing, a yielding pad 7 of felt, soft rubber, or other suitable material.
In the operation of my invention, the member 2 is forced inwardly to a position in which the rod may be extended betwe n the jambs 6, after which the spring 5 is permitted to force the member 2 outwardly, so that the pads 7 will bear tightly against the jambs 6. It will be understood that the drapery to be supported may be mounted in the usual way on portiere rod. If the rod is to be threaded through the drapery the members 1 and 2 are drawn apart so that this may be effected, after which the member 2 is inserted, as described, in the member 1.
c As the rod is retained against the jambs solely by frictional pressure, the rod may be adjusted vertically or horizontally with ease to any desired position, from which position it can be as readily changed to another position without having to remove or insert any nails, screws or similar securing devices. Furthermore, the frictional supporting means prevents the marring or scratching of the casing.
I do not limit my invention to the structure shown and described, as many modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is A ortiere rod comprising two members neatly slidably fitted into and out of engagementWith each other, two caps respectively a, coil spring mounted in the tilblila'r fmemclosing the outer ends of said members and berand bearing at one end against'the ad- 10 arranged to support said members and hav jacent capand bearing at its other end ing means for respectively engaging and against the innefer'id'of the other member beingsupported by two jambs of a door or substantially as set forth. Window, the tubular member having a rela- I11 testimony whereof I have signed my tively small bleedhole communicating with name to this specification. v
