SEXUING-MACHINE NEEDLE PLATE.
Application filed June 23, 1921.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. Rooms, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Anacortes, in the county of Skagit and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SewingMachine Needle Plates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates generally to sewing machines, such as are used for sewing leather, rubber and similar materials, and the invention aims to provide a needle plate cap or support and a double ended needle plate mounted thereon, and reversible for use in sewing leather and rubber, said plate having a cutter for channeling or slitting the leather, and means being provided for holding said plate in either position.
It is the object of the invention to provide a novel double needle plate for use in sewing both leather and rubber, with novel means for mounting said plate and retaining it in either position.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of the device; and
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of lldounted on the needle plate cap or support 3 is an elongated double-ended needle plate or bar 4, which is pivoted intermediate its ends on the cap or support 3 by means of a pivot bolt 5, permitting said plate or bar 4 to be turned about a vertical axis end for end. The plate 4 is provided adjacent to each end with a needle slot 6, for the passage of the needle, and one end portion of the plate is plain for sewing rubber, while the plate is provided thereon near the other end portion with a cutter 7 beyond one end of the corresponding slot 6, for channeling or slitting the leather.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 8, 1922..
Serial No. 479,817.
Thus, in sewing leather, the plate 4 can be turned to bring that end portion thereof having cutter 7 into position for cooperation with the needle, whereas when rubber is sewed, and the same is not to be channeled or slit, then, the plate 4 is turned around to bring the plain end portion thereof into position. The needle plate is readily turned around, for conveniently changing the device for sewing either rubber or leather.
In order to retain the needle plate in either position, a catch is provided, including a leaf spring 10 secured to the under side of the cap or support 3 by means of the bolt 5 and projecting to the rear end of the support and h as a button 12 sliding through the support for the engagement of the thumb or finger to depress said spring. An upstanding pin 9 is secured to the spring 10 between the ends thereof and slidable upwardly through an aperture 10 in the support 3. The plate 4 has apertures 11 between the pivot 5 and ends of the plate, for the reception of the pin 9. Thus, when the plate is turned to either position, the pin 9 will snap upwardly into the corresponding apertures 11, and by depressing the free end of the spring 8, the pin 9 is retracted, to permit the plate 4 to be turned around. The change is therefore made quickly and conveniently.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A reversible needle plate device for a sewing machine embodying a support, a double ended needle plate bearing on the support, a pivot member engaging through the support and mounting the needle plate for turning movement to bring either end portion into position for sewing, and a spring catch at the under side of the support engaging said pivot member to be held in position and having means engaging upwardly through the support to engage said plate for retaining it in either position.
2. A. reversible needle plate device for a sewing machine comprising a support, a double ended needle plate bearing on the support, a pivot member pivoting the intermediate portion of said plate on said support so that either end of the plate can be moved to operative position beyond one end of the support, a leaf spring secured to the under side of said support by said pivot s v I? In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of 10 two subscribing Witnesses.
