Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 1,1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. Norns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mondamin, in the county of Harrison and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in wrenches, and has for its object to provide wrenches which may be used for gen eral purposes and also will be of great advantage for use in connection with automobiles and in instances where the parts to be operated upon are not conveniently accessible.
The invention includes wrench head-members of various sizes, a coupling-block or holder-member in which the head-members may be removably mounted, and a handle of angular form having end-portions of such form that they may be removably mounted in the block or holder.
In the accompanying drawing which illus trates one embodiment of the invention, Fig. l is a side view of the wrench. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, the handle being inverted, and the coupling-block being in section. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the coupling-block, a wrench-head also being shown. Fig. 4: is an end view of the coupling-block. Fig. 5 is an end view of a wrench-head and coupling-block. Figs. 6, 7, and 8 illustrate wrench-heads of various forms and sizes adapted to be mounted in the coupling-block.
Referrin now to the drawing for a more particular %escription, I provide a holdermember, sleeve or coupling-block 9, preferably having reinforcing-bosses a formed at its ends, its aperture Z) being adapted to receive the shank c of a wrench-head 10.
It will be seen that wrench- heads 11, 12, 13 and 14 are provided which differ in size, but their shanks o are preferably of uniform length, and are of such diameter that when inserted in the aperture 6 they will normally remain therein and will not become detached, during use, from eifects of ordinary shocks or vibration, but may be manually removed, the object in providing the several wrench-heads being, obviously, that their prongs d may engage objects differing in size.

said handle being provided with rectilinear end-p0rtions l6 and 17 havin diameters corresponding to the bore of t e aperture of member 9, said diameter being such that when inserted in the aperture 6 they will remain therein, normally, and that ordinary shocks or vibration, incident to the use of the device, will not cause removal therefrom.
It will be understood that after the shank o of any one of the wrench-heads has been inserted in the aperture Z) it may be manually rotated to a suitable position for engagement of its prongs (Z with an object to be rotated or moved; and since the handle is of angular form, objects may be engaged which might otherwise be inaccessible or ditficult of access, the parts of the device, in some instances, being arranged for operation as shown in Fig. 1, and in other instances, changed to the position shown in Fig. 2, by reversing the position of the handle.
In some instances it may be desired to cause a rotation of the wrench-head by rotating the handle, and therefore the end of each shank and the ends of the handle are provided with interlocking means, said endportions 16 and 17 having a projection c and recess 7", and each shank 0 having a projection 9 adapted to engage in a recess f, and having a recess 72, for receiving a projection e ofan end-portion of said handle. Numeral 18 indicates a boss operating as a stop for the shank 0, and the diameter of the handle 15 is of such proportion relative to the end-portions 16 and 17 that stopmembers 19 are provided.
It is obvious that the parts mentioned may have such size and proportion as may be required to resist stresses, and that operation will be practically the same, and changes in this respect may be made as may be found to advantage, depending upon the use required for a wrench, all such changes being within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
In combination, a wrench-head provided with a rectilinear shank having a recess opening on its end and side, a handle provided with a rectilinear part having a recess opening on its end and side, a couplingblock open at its ends to receive said shank and to receive said rectilinear part of the handle, said recess of said shank having a facet disposed in line with the longitudinal axis of the shank, the reoess of the rectilinear part of said handle having a facet disposed in line with the longitudinal axis of said rectilinear part, to permit engagement ofsaid facets one Withthe other when the shank and handle are/inserted in the
