To aZZ whom t may'concern Be it known that I, HUGO F. Linn'rkn, a .citizen of the United States, and resident of Hagerstown, Maryland, have invented ce1. tain new and useful Improvements in Sand- Blast Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My' invention relates to sand blast appa- `-ratus for cleaning castings or like purposes,
ofthe typein which a sand blast nozzle is movably mounted in achamber or cabinet into which the castings or articles to be treated by the sand blast are transported by a movable carrier which also effects their delivery from the sand blast chamber. The invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is acentral vertical *sectionaly us, the sand blast table which projects partlylinto the chamberand partly 'extends outside of the same.
` This table 2 has a deep flange 3 and carries gratings 4 through the openings o'f which the sand may pass, and upon which the cast-- ings are supported while being transported into and out from the chamber A. An inspection door is provided at 5 through which the operatory may make adjustments or re-v placements. This chamber is lined with heavy wear lates 6 to prevent the sand from causing un ue wear; on the casing. lThese plates lare removable `to be replaced by new plates when worn. The rotary table 41s cast vin one piece and the deep ange 3 prevents the blast from blowing smaller and lighterv a-rticles ofi" from the same. The table is mounted by its hub 7 upon a central vertical shaft 8 by which it is rotated. The front projecting portion of the table 'is protected i by a guard 9 which is provided with a bottom plate'lO over which Scrapers "11 move, the:l latter being secured to the bottom of the rotary table and serving .to scrape the sand from the bottom late 10 of the guard into the hopper'12. t the rear portion of the `table is located a guard 13,-this being formed in sections and covering the space between the. upstanding ange of the table and the casing 14, and-this guard prevents any of the Work pieces from dropping into the vhopper 12 andcausing a jam of the table and clogging the flow of the sand therefrom.
Arod or link 29 is pivotally connected at 30 to a member carriedV by the crank. and the other end of this link is pivoted at 31 to ay bracket' or member 3 2 swivelled 'on a swinging arm or lever-33, mounted on the upper end of la shaft 34 which turns in bearings 35. 'The arm or lever 33 is thus adapted toswing in a. horizontal plane under the action of the` back and forth movement im-v parted from the crank through the link or rod 29, and this horizontal swinging motion of the vertical shaft 34 is communicated to a holder or bracket 38 for the sand gun which depends therefrom at a slight angle to a vertical line. To the holderor bracket 38 is attached the compressed air supply hose 39 and it also'has screwed into it an air jet 40 which delivers the air to the blast gun. The blast gunl is held in place by means of the set'screw 41 which clamps it to the air jet tube. A. suction hose 42 is connected to the blast gun body and through this hose the .sand is delivered to the blast gun. A nozzle 43,is connected to the body of the blast gun by a set screw 41 and side. In the operation of the apparatus,
through this the blast 'of sand is delivered and directed upon the articles carried by the table.` The suction hose 42 as well as the compressed air hose leads from the outer `wall of the chamber A and by'means of suitable connections 39", 42X they are joined to the air and sand supply lines. V l
At the lower end' of the hopper 12 there is'provided a sand feed box 44 and the suction supply hose 42 leads from this .box to receive its supply of sand therefrom. The compressed air line is provided with a globe valve 45 and a pressure gauge 46. A suitable clean-out door 47 is provided in the wall of the hopper.
It will be observed that the vertical shaft 8 and the driving mechanism are located in a compartment divided off fromA the blast chamber A. Any number of rows of yHexible flaps 48 may be provided to close the opening through which the table rotates,
so `that the abrasive material will not be discharged from the chamber A to the oiltt e belt is applied to the tight pulley. dAbrasive material is then supplied by dumping it'onto the front projecting portion of the table. This abrasive material drops' from the perforated gratos and is carried by the scrapers on the bottom of the table, into lthe hopper and after a sufficient amount of abrasivehas beenvsupplied, the castings or other articles to be cleaned are placed on the outer projecting portion of the table and the air valve is then opened. The air under'pressure issuing from theair jet tube creates a -partial vacuum in the` blast gun body and thus drawsalnixture of air and' sand from'the bottom of the hopper at which the sand feed box is located. This mixture, together with the air from the air jet 40, is projected through the nozzle onto the work pieces to be cleaned, and during the cleaning operation the blast gun is. oscil- (lated in a horizontal plane, due to the rocking motion imparted to the vertical shaft 34 from the crank shaft through the connections above described. This will cause the blast to traverse the rear portion of the table surface to act upon the articles held thereon and being transported thereby, so that these will be thoroughly cleaned. :The nozzle can be raised or lowered, Vdepending upon the class of work to be cleaned, by adjusting the bracket or casting 37 up or down on the shaft 34. In orderI to allow any generated dust to escape, a Ventilating opening is provided at 49 and a draft of air is induced through the flexible iaps into the blast chamber and thence out through the Ventilating opening 49.' The abrasive which is discharged through the nozzle onto the castings or articles for performing the cleaning action thereon flows through the pertorations in thegratings carried by the ronasales 'tary table and then lodges in the hopper 12 for use over and over again. The connection between the crank shaft and horizontally oscillating lever B3 is of a universal character by reason of the swivel members carried respectively by the crank pin and the` arm 3.3 and by reason of the pivoted connections between the link or rod 29 and these members.
The throw of the blast vgun or the length of its oscillating movements may be varied by adjusting the member 32 on the.hori.. zontally moving lever 33, for which purpose 'collars 50 are adjustably held by s et screws on the lever 33.
I claim:
1. In combination in a sand blast apparatus, va casing, a rotary carrier lying partly within and partly without said cas,- ing, a sand blast` nozzle, an air jet nozzle, an arm supporting .said nozzles at its free end and oscillating in a horizontal plane over the said table, a vertical shaft carrying said arm, and a pairl of flexible hose pipes extending from a point adjacent the axis of 90' oscillation of the saidnozzle supporting arm to the nozzles carried thereby,'snbstantially as described.
3. In combination, a casing, a carrier for the work pieces, a vertical shaft for driving said carrier, a horizontal `drive shaft at the upperpart of the casing a connection from 115 the said horizontal drive shaft to the vertical shaft for rotating the carrier, said drive shaft having a crank, a nozzle supporting arm arranged to oscillate in a horizontal plane within the casing, a vertical shaft car- 120 rylng said nozzle supporting arm, a horizontal arm on said vertical shaft, and a link connection between the last mentioned arm and the crank of the horizontal driving shaft, substantially as described.
4. In combination, a -casingga carrier'for the work pieces, a verticalI shaft for drivlng'sald carrier; a horizontal drive shaft at the upper part of the casing, a connection from the said horizontal drive shaft to the 130 vertical shaft, said drive shaft having a crank, a nozzle supporting arm arranged to oscillate in a horizontal plane within the casing, a vertical shaft carrying said nozzle supporting arm, a horizontal arm on said vertical shaft, and a link connection between the last mentioned arm and the crank o f the driving shaft, said connection havin a universal joint between its ends and t e said arm and crank respectively, substantially as described. v-
5. In combination, a casing, a rotary carrier lying partly within and partly without said casing, a vertical shaft for driving the carrier, al worm wheel at the upper part of said shaft, a worm for driving.y said wheel,

In combination in apparatus of the class described, a rotary table, a casing, an arm oscillating in a horizontal plane over the table, a bracket mounted on the free end of the arm, an air nozzle carried by the bracket and projecting therefrom a sand blast gun supported on and surrounding said nozzle, and having a nozzle. Iin line with the air nozzle, a pair of flexible hose pipes, one of which connects with the bracket to supply air to the air nozzle and the other of which connects with the gun,

9. In combination, a rotarytable, an arm substantially oscillating horizontally thereover, a casing,
a vertical shaft carrying the said arm, a`
sand blast gun on the free end of thearni, an air hose and a sand hose leading from a point at'vthe wall of the casing adjacent the axis about which the oscillating arm moves, air supply and sand supply pipes, and connections between the same and the air and sand hose at the Wall of the casing, substantially as described.
10. In combination, a rotary table, an arm oscillating horizontally thereover, a vertical shaft carrying said arm and along which said arm is adjustable towards and from the table, a sand blast gun on the free end of the arm, a casing enclosing the arm and a part of the table, flexible air and sand hose eX- tending from the sand blast gun along the oscillating arm to a point adjacent the vertical shaft, fittings to which the said air and sand hoses are connected and pipes for delivering sand and air to said stantially as described.
