T. H. B. HOWARD.
LAMP EXTINGUISHER. APPLICATION FILED APR. 27. 1920.
Patented July 4, 1922 zjwuc wim 1". ENE-Howard TRAVIS H. B. HOWARD, OF COMO, MISSISSIPPI.
LAMP EXTINGUISHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July a, 1922..
Application filed April 27, 1920. Serial No. 378,934.
ff '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TRAVIS H. B. HOWARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Como, in the county of Panolaand State of Mississippi, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp Extinguishers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in lamp extinguishers.
The object of this invention is to improve the construction of lamps and to equip the lamps with means whereb the flame may be extinguished when desired A further object of this invention is to provide a device capable of stopping the flow of oil through the wick and thus extinguish the flame.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a device adapted to be positioned within the wick tube whereby it may be moved into engagement with the wick to prevent the passage of oil through the wick and thus extinguish the flame.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a lamp extinguisher of this character, which will be simple, practical and comparatively inexpensive in construction and one that can be manufactured and sold at a low cost.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described and set forth in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of an oil lamp partly broken away to illustrate my lamp extinguisher,
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the lamp,
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the extin 'uisher,
igure 4 is a detail vertical sectional view illustrating the manner in which the extinguisher is located in the wick tube.
Like numerals of references designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5 indicates a base having a standard secured thereto upon which is secured the oil containing body 7 of the lamp. The body 7 has removably secured thereto the general type of lamp burner designated 8 which is provided with the usual chimney guards 9 to retain the lamp chimney 10 thereon.
The burner 8 is provided centrally with a vertical wick tube 11 which wick tube is provided intermediate its ends and in the wall thereof with an offset portion. The usual wick turner 13 is extended transversely through the burner 8 and is provided with the wheels 14: which are located in the wick tube, which are adapted to engage the wick designated A in the drawing to raise and lower the latter when it is desired.
The lamp extinguisher is designated in its entirety by the numeral 15 and comprises a rod 16 which is journaled through the burner and wall of the wick tube 11. The rod has depending therefrom, a lug 17, which lug is adapted to be moved into the ofiset portion 12 to avoid obstructing the movement of the wick when the same is being raised or lowered. One end of the rod is provided with a knurled wheel 18 which constitutes means whereby the rod may be rotated to move the lug 17 into engagement with the wick for binding it against the wall of the wick tube as illustrated in dotted lines in Figure 4, thus cutting off the supply of oil through the wick and extinguishing the flame.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is:
An extinguisher for a lamp of the wick type, in combination with the wick tube having an outwardly offset portion providing a recess in communication with the wick space of the tube, said portion having side walls, a squeeze plate completely disposed in said recess, rod portions extending from said plate above its horizontal center and journalled in said side walls so that the plate will of itself normally hang vertically and will seek the vertical after operation whereby movement of the wick in either direction is unaifected by its presence, and one of said rod portions extending beyond the adjacent side wall for finger manipulation to move the plate into squeezing relation with the wick.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
TRAVIS H. B. HOWARD.
Witnesses:
