COMB.
Application filed June 26, 1920.
.T 0 all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, SIMON E. MONROE, a citizen of the United States, residing "at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented,
certain new and useful Improvements in Combs, of which thefollowing is a specification.
One object of my invention is to provlde an improved comb which, without the removal of any of the parts, can be used w th equal facility in either hand for comblng curly or kinky hair so as to straighten the hair and remove any undesirable kinks or curls.
Another object is to make my improved comb insuch manner that it can be properly heated and will cause the hair to move into such contact therewith that the hair will be quickly and thoroughly straightened.
A further object is to so construct the comb of my present invention that it can be easily manufactured and will be of a simple and durable construction.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a comb made in accordance with my invention,
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view of my improved comb, and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary inverted plan view of the comb.
Referring to the drawing my improved comb includes a head 4 which is preferably made of metal and which has inwardly curved or concave side faces 5 which flare downwardly. from a comparatively narrow elongated top surface 6. These side surfaces adjacent the bottom intercept straight beveled surfaces 7 which are provided on teeth 8; said teeth being formed by slots or kerfs 9 which extend into the head from opposite sides thereof; the teeth 8 above the bevels 7 following the curvature of the side faces 5. The bottom surface 10 of the head 4 extends straight between the bottoms of the bevels 7 and this surface 10 forms the bottom edge of the teeth 8. The tops of the slots 9 inwardly from the side faces 5 are formed by walls'll which slant down wardly in opposite directions from the faces 5 between the bevels 7 and the top surface 6. These walls 11 meet each other prefer- Specification of Letters Patent.

ably ator slightly above the bottom surfaces 10 of the-teeth8; thus causing the slots 9 to. taper inwardly between the teeth, and the meeting of the walls 11 is preferably central between the opposite outer ends of the bevels 7. Thus a row of teeth is formed on each side of the head and in the use of my improvedv comb the head a is preferably heated to a suitable degree and is provided with a handle 12 whereby it can be used with equal facility in either hand and the hair will be compelled to move into the slots and engage the walls 11 causing the hair to be deflected outwardly during the combing action and thus presented to a comparatively wide surface of the head 4 which quickens the straightening action. The beveled surfaces 7 of the teethpermit an initial penetrating row of elements and the inwardly curved faces 5 causes the hair to quickly move into the slots and at the same time the weight of the head 4 is reduced. By making the bottom surface 10 straight across no uncomfortable feeling will be experienced during the use of the comb since the comb will ride smoothly over the scalp.
While I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A comb of the character described having a head including a row of teeth separated by slots, the top walls of said slots tapering toward the bottom of the head, said head above the bottoms of said teeth having its.
wardly from said side faces the top walls of said slots tapering downwardly in 0 posite directions toward the bottom of sald head; substantially as described.
4-. A comb of the character described including a head having side surfaces flaring downwardly and having slots extending inwardly from said side faces, the top walls 01 said slots tapering downwardly in opextending bevels; sub-.
tion substantially midway between its opposite sides; substantially as described.
6. A comb of the character described having a head provided with a rowv of teeth on its bottom portion separated by slots, the top walls of the slots tapering toward the bottom of the head; and a handle secured to said head and, bein included in a plane extending perpendicu ar from the bottoms of the teeth and substantially midway between their'ends; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
I SIMON E. MONROE.
