:' State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Motion- .Picture-Shutter-Adjusting Mechanism, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.
This invention relates to motion picture apparatus, and pertains more particularly to the shutter arrangement and operating and controlling mechanisms therefor.
The object of my invention is to operate two shutters in opposite directions within a slidable support in most simple and efficient manner.
Another object is to provide means to vary the timing of said shutters during operation and from a point immediately on or about the framing device handle of such apparatus.
i nother object is to provide means whereby said timing arrangement of said shutters is connected with and operates in unison with a picture framing device of a picture apparatus where it is essential that the shutters should be automatically rectified in accordance with an intermittent movement.
Referring to the drawings:

As shown in Fig. 1, M is the main drive gear in'a picture apparatus driving the intermediary gear 2 which is fastened to gear 3 on shaft 4. Gear 3 is a spiral gear driving the gear 5, which is the driver for the intermittent fil-m advancing mechanism.
1 The gearv3 also drives the long spiral gear 6, which is slid'ably mounted upon a tubular shaft 7 by means of a 'keyway in the gear 6 and a key 6 in shaft 7. This shaft 7 has also another key 7 which extends through and into the inside of said shaft and engages the shutter carrying tubular shaft 8, which is also mounted in a slidable support 9, running in ball bearing 10 and held therein by the retention nuts (rin 12). These means hold the tubular shaft 8 in the slidable support 9. The ball bearing 13 retains the main. tube shaft 7 in the general frame 14 for the a paratus. The ball hearing itself is held y the adjustable cup 15. The
tubular shaft has miter gear teeth on one end, driving miter gear 16, which drives (cesides other parts) the rmter gear 17, which is mounted upon the long shutter shaft 13. This shaft revolves in opposite direction to tube shaft 7 and extends through the tube shaft having a key-way in heother extremity, which is connected with the shutter cup 19 by key 18.
Shutter cup 19, while being driven the shaft 18, is otherwise independent thereof, and is held firmly to the other shutter by an arrangement which still allows them to revolve in opposite directions. lhis is accomplished by one'single ball bearing of the non-separable typeas follows:
@ne half of the ball bearing 20 is firmly fastened to shutter cup 19 by retention nut 21. The other half of the ball bearing is firmly held in the shutter carrying shaft 8 by means of the retention nut 22. There fore, the shutter cup 19 must always follow the shaft 8, which is held in support 9 and controlled thereby as to back and forth sliding movement. The support 9 also carries the shutter protection pans 23 and 24 which are separable by means of buttons 25 and 26.
Thus far, l have explained the rotating and sliding means of the shutters. l will now describe the means that will advance or retard their rotation for the purpose of having the shutters pass through the focal axis at a desired instant.(before or during operation of the entire apparatus). To accomplish this it is but necessary to slide the spiral gear 6 on the tube shaft 7, thereby advancing or retarding the rotary motion of both shutters. vided a groove 6 in the-hub of gear 6, which groove is engaged by the yoke 27. Yoke 27 is held to the frame 14 by screw 28 and is slidable thereon. Yoke 27 is provided with a rack 27 which is engaged by the gear 29, which gear 29 is mounted upon shaft 30 having at the other extremity the half gear 31 (see Fig. 2). Another feature is the simple construction whereby the intermediary shutter gear 16 also drives the upper film feed rolls as shown in Fig. 1, and also carries a governor for the operation of some speed controlled device.
The support 9 also carries the optical lenses 0 and L. The shiftable support 9 is shifted for the purpose of focusing the picture, and is operated by having bar 3T mounted in support 9 extend into the frame 14, said bar 37 being a tube threaded on the inside and receives the lead screw 38, which is operated by gears 39 and 40 upon shaft 41. This shaft is operated by hand and can have at one extremity a suitable handle thereforf The centre of the shut ter axis is in horizontal alignment with the optical axis, which makes the operation of the closing and opening of the optical axis absolutely perfect.
What I claim. as my invention is:
1. In combination with a motion picture apparatus, a lens, a framing device, a plurality of rotating shutters, a common movable support for said lens and shutters, means to move said support, means to rotate the shutters, means to adjust said shutters relative to each other, and While in motion, and means operated by the framing device to also adjust said shutters relatively to each other simultaneously with the framing of the film.
2, In a motion picture apparatus, a shutter rotating and adjusting device consisting of a pair of shutters, and a lens mounted in a common movable support, a protective casing for the shutters, a common ball hearing between the shutters, another bearing in the movable support, a tubular shaft secured to one shutter slidably mounted in another tube shaft, and a slidable gear on said'last tube shaft, and a fixed gear also mounted thereon, a central shaft extending through the tube shaft into the other shutter, a key connecting said shutter and shaft with said central shaft and slidable therewith, means to operate the slidable gear, means to rotate same, means to shift the movable support, a framing device, means to operate the slidable gear in unison with said framing device, and means to operate said slidable gear from immediate convenient position on said framing device.
3. n a motion picture apparatus, the combination of a plurality of shutters and a lens in a common movable support, means to move said support during operation, means to adjust the shutters relative to each other during operation, a framing device, and means to adjust said shutters in unison with the framing device during operation and independently thereof, and means to rotate the shutters during the operation of the machine .and independently of the framing device.
4. In a motion picture apparatus, a main frame, a lens, a plurality of shutters revolving around a common axis and in alignment with the lens, a common shiftable housing for both shutters and lens, means to ad'ust said shutters in the housing, means to shift the entire housing from and toward said main frame, ball bearings for said shutters, a framing device operatively connected with said shuttervadjusting means, and a slidable gear drive for the shutters all carried and supported by said main frame- Signed at the city of New York, New York, this 22nd day of June, one thousand nine hundred and seventeen.
