FEED TABLE AND GUIDE FOR PAPER-RULING MACHINES.

Be it known that I, LITTLETON Bnoons BoswoRTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Doughertyand State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed Tables and Guides for Paper-Ruling 'Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.

My invention relates to paper ruling machines, and has for its object to provide a guide that may be attached to ruling machines for the purpose of shifting the position of the paper in relation to the ruling pens so that the paper may be properly ruled on both sides without the necessity of shifting or changing the ruling pens. For such purpose the invention contemplates a guide that may be readily attached to the feed board end of the machine and provided with means for ready adjustment of the guide laterally of the line of feed of the paper so that the paper may be readily adjusted on the feed board to the position which will correctly feed it to the ruling pens to effect or produce the ruling at theproper points or position on the paper being ruled, as hereinafter particularly described and then sought to be clearly defined by the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of so much of a ruling machine as necessary for illustration of the ruling guide attached thereto;

In the drawing the numeral 1 designates a portion of a paper ruling machine of a well known type and known as a Hickok machine showing in a general way the feed board 2, feed roll 3, and ruling pen bar 4: and pens 5 of such a machine, to which the improved feed table and guide are attached. The guide attachment comprises a table or board 6 on which the paper to be ruled may be piled. or stacked, said table having bolts 7 provided with thumb nuts 8 and carrying a clamp 9 so that the edges of the machine feed board 2 may fit between the bottom of the feed table and the clamp 9 and have the table supported therefrom by tightening the nuts of the bolts. The table 6 at the end next to the machine feed board 2 is provided with a guide bar or finger 10 attached to rack bars 11 fitted in ways 12 formed in the table, said racks and finger being moved by pinions or toothed wheels 13 attached to a rotatable shaft 14: suitably mounted in the table 6 and operated by a hand wheel 15, or

. equivalent means, so that the guide finger or member may be adjusted transversely of the feed line of the ruling machine to the extent desired. The guide finger or member 10 has attached thereto an apron 16 which extends back partially over the table 6 and serves to close the space between-the guide finger 10 and adjacent edge of the table in the adjustment of the guide-finger and thus permit the sheets of paper to be ruled to be passed smoothly over the apron and onto the feed board of the machine and then be brought up against the face of the finger 10 to be properly guided to the ruling members of the machine.

In operation, the ruling pens having been adjusted for the form to be ruled, for instance with a predetermined arrangement of columns, the guide finger is adjusted by means of the rack and pinions to the proper position for such ruling; the sheet of paper is shifted by the operator from the pile or stack resting on the table into position on the feed board of the machine and its edge brought against the face of the finger so that the paper will be fed squarely to the ruling members of the machine. When the number of sheets for the job have been ruled on one side and it is desired to rule the same form on the opposite side, the guide finger is adjusted by the racks and pinions to the position to present the paper to the ruling members or pens so that the form will be ruled in the proper position on the reverse side of the paper without the necessity of changing the ruling pens to rule the columns in proper position for the reverse side of the paper. This shifting or adjustment of the guide finger for the purpose stated is quickly efi'ected by simply turning the shaft carrying the pinions which mesh with the racks of the table and guide fingers. When the adjustment has been made the parts will be locked in position by the thumb set screw 17 which will be tightened so as to grip or bite the pinion-carrying shaft and thus hold the guide finger in proper position.

The guide and table are made as an attachment that may be attached to ruling machines already in use without requiring any special construction or change in construction of machines in use, and it is readily and quickly attached as described. The ad justment of the guide-finger is quickly and simply effected without the loss of material time; and the device insures accuracy in the ruling being done.

I have illustrated and described the preferred details of construction but changes can be made therein without departure from the essential features of the invention.

Having described my invention and set forth its merits what I claim is:

1. A feed table and guide attachment for paper ruling machines, comprising a table, a guide-finger positioned at the end thereof transversely to the line of travel of paper from the table, a rack-bar connecting the table and guidefinger, and members operatively connected with the rack for adjusting the guide finger lengthwise of the table.

2. A feed table and guide for paper rulingv machines, comprisinga table, a guidefinger positioned at the end of the table, means for adjusting the guide-finger re1atively to the table, and means for clamping the table and finger to a part of a. ruling. machine.

3. A feed table and guide-finger attachment for paper ruling machines, comprising a table, an adjustable guide-finger extending transversely of the table at the end thereof, a rack connecting the table and finger, and meansengaging the rack for adj usting the finger lengthwise of thetablei 4. A feed table and guide-finger for ruling machines, comprising a table, an adjustable guide-finger, a rack connecting the paper and table, means engaging the rack for adjusting the finger, and means looking the finger to its adjustment.

5. A feed *table and guide finger for rill-- in machines, comprising a table, an adjustab e guide-finger, means for adjusting the guide-finger, and an apron connected with the guide-finger and extended onto the table.;
