BREATHER-PIPE FILTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 3, 1922.
Application filed January 8, 1921. Serial No. 435,907.
ful Breather-Tips Filter, of 'which the fol-.
lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to breather pipe filters which are used in the crank cases of internal combustionengines for the purpose of keeping the engine crank cases free from dust or dirt.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a breather pipe filter which is cheap to construct and very eficient in its operation.
A. further object of my invention is to provide a breather pipe filter which may readily be removed whenever it is desired to fill the crank case with oil.
Further objects and advantages will be made evident hereinafter.
In the drawings which are for illustrative purposes only,
Fig. 1 shows my invention applied to an internal combustion engine.v
Fig. 2 shows a, cross section on an enlarged scale and Fig. 3 shows a section on a plane re resented by the line 3.-3 of Fig. 2.
Tu the embodiment shown in the drawing, my invention comprises an inner tube 11 and an outer tube 12, these tubes being concentrio with each other. A top 13 is secured in gas tight relationship with the top of the tube 12 and is so formed that a space 14 is left between the top of the tube 11 and the top 13. The tubes are spaced apart from each other by means of metal sheets 15 bent in the form shown in Fig. 3. A screen 16 is secured inside the tube 11 somewhere near its center and the upper portion of this tube as well as the space between the tubes 11 and 12 is filled with fibrous material 17. The tube 11 fits over an extension 20 formed on the breatherpipe 21 of the crank case 22 of an internal combustion engine 23.
The method of operation of my invention is as follows:
The fiber 17 may be wet with lubricating oil before the filter is placed on the engine. The changes in volume of the crank case cause air to pass in and out of the breather pipe 21. Entering air passes upwardly between'the tubes 11 and 12 and through the space 14 into the interior of the tube 11. In
rats inner tube fitting on the its inward movement the air is freed from any dust particles which adhere to the oil soaked fiber 17. During the time that air is being expelled from the engine, the oil vapors which are carried therein are also caught by the fiber l7 tending to keep it moist and also to prevent loss of these vapors.
The oil caught from the oil vapors in movmg gradually downward by gravity through the fiber in the passage between the tubes lland 12 tends to keep the fiber washed clean and to carry the dust particles out ward and away from the engine crankcase.
The oil caught in the fiber which is in the tube 11 does not come in contact with the dust particles and this is kept clean. This oil flowing downward by gravity drips back into the crank case and is saved.
When it is desired to fill the crank case. the filter can be readily removed and washed in waste lubricating oil to remove the dirt therefrom.
I claim as my invention:
1. A breather pipe filter for an internal combustion engine comprising imperforate cylindrical walls forming a channel through which air may pass axially; means for securing said walls to the breather pipe of an internal combustion engine; and fibrous material secured in said channel.
2. A breather pipe filter for an internal combustion engine comprising imperforate cylindrical walls forming a channel through which air may pass axially; means for securing said walls to the breather pipe of an internal combustion engine; and oil soaked fibrous material secured in said channel.
3. A breather pipe filter for an internal combustion engine comprising an imperiorate inner tube fitting on the breather pipe of the internal combustion engine; an imperforate outer tube outside said inner tube; means for closing the upper end of said outer tube which is in open communication with the upper end of said inner tube; and fibrous material in the passages formed by said tubes.
' 4.1L breather pipe filter for an internal combustion .engine comprising an imperfo of the internal combustion e forate' outer tube outside said inner tube; means for closing the upper end of said outer tube which is in open communication with e an imperbreather pipe 4 the upper end of said inner tube; and oil soaked fibrous material in the passages formed by said tubes.
5. A breather pipe filter for an internal combustion engine comprising an imperfo- .rate inner tube fitting on the breather pipe of the internal combustion engine; an imperforate outer tube outside said inner tube; means for rigidly securing said outer tube to said inner tube; means for closing the upper end of said outer tube which is in open communication with the upper end of said inner tube; and fibrous material in the passages formed by said tubes.
6. A breather pipe filter for an internal combustion engine comprising an imperiorate inner tube fitting on the breather pipe of the internal combustion engine; an imperforate outer tube outside said inner tube;
means for rigidly securing said outer tube HERMAN H. GARNER.
