Application filed me 25;
To all whom it man concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES J. Soss, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the County of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hinges or hinge butts and particularly to articles of this class made from a single piece of metal, and the object of the invention is to provide an improved hinge butt which is formed from a sheet metal blank fashioned to produce, a complete hinge'butt which will possess the greatest possible strength and durability,
and which may be manufactured at a minimum expense, and. with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a hinge butt of the class specified and the method of producin the same, as hereinafter described and c aimed. I
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the'accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of a blank from which one form of my improved .hin ge butt" is made; 7

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 3, 1922. 1921. Serial No. 489,259.
In Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, I have shown one form of construction and have indicated the principal steps in the formation of said hinge butt, and in Fig. 1 I have shown at 11 a blank from which the hinge butt is formed, and said blank is provided at one end with an oblong rectangular end portion 12 which forms the attaching plate 13 of the hinge butt, and this plate is provided with a plurality of apertures 14, and centrally thereof with two elongated apertures 15. 1
Joining the end portion 12 of the blank is' a comparatively wide body portion 16 provided adjacent to said end with laterally projecting curved members 17. The blank 11 is split or out as shown at 18 to separate said members 17 from the end 12 up to the dot and dash lines 19 upon which the blank is folded, as hereinafter set out. The body 16 'is provided at its other end with a slightly reduced portion 20 outwardly of which is a reduced extension 21 having an enlarged fork-shaped head 22, said head being formed by a central recess 23 and projecting members 24.
'In the operation of forming the hinge butt from the blank llfashioned as above set out, said blank is first folded upon the transverse line 25 to form a tubular knuckle 26 of the extension 20. of said blank and in folding the blank,- as above set out, the reduced end portion 21 is placed upon the enlarged portion 16 of the blank, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, andthe parts thus folded maybe spot welded together, if desired.
The next step in forming the complete hinge butt consists in folding or bending the blank, or the enlarged portion 16 there of on the lines 19 to provide flanges 27 at the opposite sides of the portion 16 of the blank,
and the members 17 at right angles to the body of theblank and to overlap the'side edge portions of the extension 21, as shown at 28 in Figs. 3 and 5 of the drawing. In
this operation, the fork-shaped head .22 on the'end of the extension 21 is also folded on the lines 30 of Fig. 1 so as to bring the projectingv members 2% and the curved rear portions 31 thereof at right angles to the body of the blank as shown at 32 in Figs. 3 and 5 of the drawing.
The next operation consists in bending the portion 16 of the blank as formed in butt together, and it will be noted that, the projecting members 17. abut against the inner face of the plate 13, to reinforce the method of formingthe same will pose hinge butt which integrallyjoins the Fig. 3 on the line 33 of Fig, 1 to form a hook-shaped arm 34 as shown 1n Fig. 4,
and the rectangular endportion 12 of the blank is also bent at right angles, or ap proximately so, in this operation, andthe,
projecting members 24 pass through the apertures 15 as shown at 35 in Fig. 4 in the above operation of bending the end portion 12, as above set out.
The next operation consists in heading or riveting that portion of the members 24 which projects thnough the plate- 13. of the hinge butt formed by the rectangular endpportion 12as shown at 36 in Fig, 5, and, this securely locks the plate 13; in connection with the holds the various portions of the'hinge said plate and the hinge butt memberwhen,
completely formed. It will also be apparent, that the hinge butt when completely formed.
may be welded at predetermind points, if
desired, and the complete hinge butt fin ished to the desired dimensions by means of suitabletforming dies.
From the foregoing it, will be apparent that I produce a hinge butt'comprising an attaching plate, a hook-shaped arm having a bearing for the usual pivot pin at itsfree end portion, which hingebutt by reason of sess the"greatest'possible strength and may. be made at a minlmum of expense.
In F ig; 6 of the drawing Lhave' shown a slight modification of theconstructions'hown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, in which the reduced-extension 21, or the central portion, thereof, is extended to a slight extent, and,
the extended portion is bentasshownat 37, in said figure to reinforce thatpart of the,
13, formed by the head 12, with the. hook member 34 or the parts 16 thereof, and this extension will serve to reinforce and strengthen the said corner portion of the,
hinge butt.
r In Fig. 7 I have shown another slight modification of the construction shown in;
Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, in which the central portion of theattaching plate 13', or that, portion thereofprovided with the apertures 15 is pressed inwardly to form, a recess 38 on the outer face thereof, and into which the projecting materialv of'the members 24 may be pressed in the riveting operationv above set out to form a smooth or flush" outer face for said attaching p1ae.
In Fig; 8 of the drawing, 1 have shown anotlier modification iniwhich'the projecting members 24 are riveted into the recess 38 as shown in Fig. 7, but in this figureI also,
show the members 17 as provided "with projecting members similar to the 1 members a 24,
end portion 21 and:
plate 1 end 12 of the blank as shown in said figure,
and said members are adapted to pass throughthe apertures 15in the end portion 12, which constitutesthe attaching plate 13 of thehinge butt. in forming the complete hinge butt. from the blank shown in Fig. 9, and theresultof thisoperation is shownlin Fig 10 of the drawing.
willbe understood that the hinge-butt,
shown in Fig. 10 and formed from the blank shown in, Fig. 9, will be madev in accordance with the steps ofthe process hereinbefore' described relativeqto Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive,
but instead of passing the projectingmem;
bers 24, through the plate the projecting members 40 arerpassedJthrough said plate,
or the apertures15'. therein, it being appar ent that said; apertures in the; last named caseare. spaced further apart than the apertunes l5zinthe blank shown in Fig.1,
My, invention is not limited tothe specific method of" forming the hinge buttsherein shown, and described, nor to they specific form and construction, thereof, and various changes therein and modifications thereof, may, be. made, within the scopegof the appended .claims, with out departing from the spirit of my vantages;
Having fully described my invention,
