Description
H. ZA J AC. LAMP EXTINGUlSHER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 1, 192i.
1 ,400,845 Patented Dec. 20, 1921.
LAME-EXTINGUISHER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY ZAJAO, a citizen of Poland, residing at Passaic, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful l mprovements in Lamp-Extinguishers, of whlch the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in lamp burners and has for its principal objeot to provide a device which will enable the lamp to be lighted without necessitating the removal of the chimney.
Another object is to provide an improved burner so constructed as to enable the burning end of a match or similar igniting de vice to be placed in contact with the wlck with ease.
With these and other objects in V16W tl16 invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification, claimed .and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure l is a top plan view of this 1mproved burner,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the chimney supporting ring, a portion thereof being broken away, and
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the burner.
Referring to the drawings in detail the numeral 10 designates the burner base provided with the customary wick tube 11 and the chimney securing prongs 12. A wall 13 provided with the customary perforations is arranged at the upper end of the base and surrounds the wick tube as clearly shown in Fig. 3. As shown this wall extends downwardly and outwardly and is provided with an annular flange 14 upon which the chimney supporting ring rests.
The chimney supporting ring is designated generically by the numeral 15 and comprises a tubular body 16 provided near its upper end with an inwardly extending annular flange 17 forming the support for the chimney. An opening 18 is formed in the body 16 beneath the flange and an inwardly extendingcollar 19 surrounds said opening. The upper wall of said collar inclines upwardly as shown in the drawings to enable the igniting element to be readily moved Specification of Letters Patent.

into contact with the wick, and it will be seen that the inner end of said collar is disposed inwardly beyond the inner edge of the flange 17 for a purpose to be more fully hereinafter set fort Formed in the base 10 at a point between the planes of the flat faces of the wick tube 11 is a guide opening for the reception of a rod 20, the lower end of which is provided with an angular extension 21 forming a thumb piece. A coil spring 22 surrounds the rod near its lower end and is so arranged as to tend to force the same downwardly. Secured to the upper end of the rod is an arm 23 formed at its inner end with a ring 241 in which the burner cap 25 is riveted or otherwise secured. A guard plate 26 is riveted near the lower edge of the burner cap 25 and is provided with a downward extension forming a shutter 27 which frictionally engages the inner end of the collar 19 as shown in Fig. 3.
In use it will be seen that when it is desired to light the lamp, pressure is applied to the thumb piece 21 whereby the rod 20 will move upwardly thereby lifting the burner cap and opening the shutter 27 so that a lighted match may be introduced through the opening 18. Obviously the chimney cannot become smoked by the flame of the match owing to the length of the collar l9 and the fact that the guard plate closes the distance between the end of the collar and the-burner cap. After the lamp is lighted, the match is withdrawn and upon releasing the pressure on the thumb piece it will be see-n that the burner cap' 25 will descend under the influence of the spring 22, thus returning the parts to normal position and closing the opening 18.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, itis to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is A lamp burner comprising a base, a wick tube extending therethrough, chimney securing prongs carried by the base, a chimney supporting ring associated with the base, cap downwardly and the shutter in closed said ring having an opening therein, an inposition, an extending handle for elevating Wardly extending collar surrounding the the burner cap from the exterior of the 10 opening, a burner cap associated With the lamp burner. 5 base, a shutter carried by the burner cap In Witness whereof I afiix my signature.
for closing the opening in the ring, spring pressed means to normally hold the burner V HENRY ZAJAC.
