A further object is toprovid'e albracket having gripping members adapted to firmly engage a pair of standards, so that a platform of suitable length may be easily erected beside a wall or other place by spacing two pairs of standards apart the desired distance, engaging each pair with a .bracket and placing one or more planks across the brackets for one or more workmen to stand upon.
Other objects will hereinafter appear, and in order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view partly in section of a bracket and a platform in position at the outside of a. window.
Fig. 2 is a View similar to Fig. 1, with the platform removed.
Fig. 3 is a section on line III-III f Fig 1 l f ig. 4 is an elevation of two pairs of stand# ards supporting a scaffold comprising two of the brackets and a plank placed upon said brackets.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the parts disclosed by Fig. 4.
Referring now to the several parts disclosed by the drawings, A designates a window sill and B the two vertical side members of the window frame which may be of any ordinary construction.
Referring now more particularly to the important features of the present invention, 2 designates a bracket embodying a pair of arms 4, an arm 6, and a brace 8. The arms 4 are spaced apart to admit the arm 6 and the brace 8, and bent at rightangles at one end as indicated at 9 where they are united by a transverse gripping member 12, adapted to coact with a gripping memberA 14 in supporting.the-bracket` a ladder (not shown) orstandards suc'has C. The brace 8 is provided at its lower porl tion with a plurality of notches 28 any of which are adapted to receive a keeper 30 secured to the arm 6. Said keeper 30 is spaced the greater portion of its length from the arm 6 to admit the brace 8 which holds the arms 4 and 6 from moving independently on the pivot 20.
32 designates a platform capable of supporting one man and adapted to rest upon the arms 4. Said platform 32 has slots 34 and 36 to receive the upper portions of the ai-m6 and the brace 8, which coact with a pair of depending members 38 engaging the arms 4, in holding the platform 32 reliably in place.
39 designates a transverse member adapted to be secured to the gripping member 14 by means of clamps consisting of U-shaped elements 40 and bolts 42. Said transverse member 39 is useful where a window is too wide for the gripping member 14 to span, as disclosed by Figs. 1 and 2.
Vhen the bracket 2 is applied to a pair of standards such as C which are close enough together to be engaged by the gripping members 12 and 14, the transverse member 39 is dispensed with and one side of the standards are engaged by the gripping member 12 while the opposite side is engaged by the gripping member 14 as disclosed by Figs. 4 and 5. Then so arranged it is obvious-that the weight of the plank 44, placed across the arms 4, together with the weight of the brackets 2, have a tendency to rock the latter downwardly and cause the members 12 and 14 to grip the standards C with a pressure in accordance to the weight applied, and hence the brackets 2 cannot accidentally slip downwardly upon the standards but Will be held in position until rocked upwardly to disengage the gripping mem" bers 12 and 14 from the standards.
By providing the holes 16 and 18, the arms 4 and 6 may be adjusted through a considerable range to permit the gripping members 12 and 111 to engage supports of different sizes, and by providing the holes 22 and 24, and the notches 28 and the brave 8 may be adjusted to hold the arms l in a horizontal position, and support the platform.
From the foregoing description it will be understood that I have provided an adjustable bracket Well adapted for the purposes set forth, and While I have shown and described the preferred form of the invention, I reserve the right to make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as properly fall Within the spirit and scope of the claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A bracket comprising a pair of horizontally disposed arms, a gripping member uniting said arms at their forward ends and adapted to grip vertically or horizontally disposed supports, a third arm crossing said pair of arms intermediate their ends, pivotal means connecting said arms at their intersecting portions, a gripping member on the forward end of the third arm to coact With the rst gripping member, a notched brace pivotally connected to the rear ends of the pair of arms and adjustably connected to the rear end of the third arm, a platform adapted to rest upon the horizontally disposed arms and slotted to receive the upper portions of the third arm and said brace, and means depending from said platform and engaging the horizontally disposed arms to assist the third arm and the brace in holding the platform in place.
