Description
JQA. BASTIEN REVOLVING GRATE AND FRAME FOR STEEL RANGES March 11, 1924.
Filed Dec. 9. 1922 Patented Mar. 11, 1924.
UNi'iED J'ULES A. BASTIEN, OLE GLOUCESTER, NEW JERSEY.
REVOLVING GRATE AND FUR STEEL RANGES.
Application filed December To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Jones A. BAsTInN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gloucester, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Revelv ing Grates and Frames for Steel Ranges, of which the following is a specification, retereuce being had to the 1 ccouipanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in stove grates and it is an object oi the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which be employed with advantage in the shalting and raking of a. fire bed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved grate of this general character which can be conveniently operated in a manner to maintain the same i a position to facilitate the requisite draft through the fire bed and which also can be operated to facilitate the cleaning or" the bed and the dumping of the fire bed.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved stove grate whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features oi my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in elevation of the lower portion of a stove showing the means associated with my improved grate for limiting the swinging or rocking movement thereof and to permit the dump ing of the grate;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary seetional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 2.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, A denotes the lower portion or ash pit 01"" the stove structure above which is mounted the grate frame F.
An end of the frame F is provided with a depending bearing 1 with which is ene, 1922. Serial No. $05,853.
an end ortion of the ate shaft or P gr gage ar the opposite end portion of said bar a be,
or shaft 2 being disposed through and operatively supported by a. wall 3 of the stove structure. The portion of the shaft or bar 2 exterior of the stove structure is herein disc osed as angular in cross section at 4; to
0 means whereby a suitable implebe engaged therewith for rocking or bar 2. mien the shaft or bar 2 at predepaced lon itudinally therefrom each of which radithe ari'ns 6 the outer arms being substanudinaliy aligned with the third right angles thereto.
iltlQS of the arms 6 are g bars 7 each being subanii-circular in form. lnterposed en the e i 7 are the intermediate 8 also substantially arcuate in form. uljavent extremities of the adjacent i tially Lei-mediate bars 8. The acent bars 7 and 8 and s 11 each 01" said lugs being pyramidal in 'on of the shaft or bar 2 1 mom a rock arm 12 which limited swinging movement between the stop shoulders 14 carried by the arm The arm 15 is positioned exterior ly oi the stove structure and has one end portion pivotally supported as at 16 for swinging move ent toward or from the shaft nile the opposite end poror her i tion of said arm ll? is normally engaged with keeper 1'? carried the stove structure.
The bars 7 and 8 are of such length that the portions thereof between the intermediate arms 6 and an end arm 6 serve closely approach and extend across the grate frame F and upon which the Fire bed is supported. Should such portion of the grate become clogged or the eiiieicncy thereof otherwise reduced, it is only necessary to rock the shaft or bar 2 sufiiciently to position the opposite end portions of said bars 7 and 8 innnediately adjacent to the frame The arms of the bars 7 and 8 are also of such length as to properly extend across the grate frame F when the shaft or bar 2 is rocked to shake the fire and during which operation the lugs 11 serve to rake the fire bed and particularly to break or reduce clinkers or the like which may be formed in the fire bed and which action is facilitated in connection with the longitudinal or side portions of the frame F. As is illustrated in the drawings it is also to be noted that the shaft or bore 2 is so positioned and the bars 7 and 8 are on such radii as to have portions of said bars at all times partially ex tending within the grate frame F and it is also to be noted that the bars 7 and 8 do not extend above the adjacent portion of said frame.
As is illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings it is to be noted that the raking lugs 11 are of a length to extend above the frame F as the same pass or travel between the side members of the frame.
When it is desired to dump the fire it is only necessary to raise the arm 15 sufiiciently to free the same from the arm 12 whereupon the grate will drop down.
To facilitate the requisite passage of the lugs 11 the under surface of the inner marginal portions of the side members of the frames is provided with an undercut groove or recess 18 for each of the lugs 11.
I also find it of advantage to provide the outer end of the arm 12 with the groove or channel 19 extending thereacross and which receives the inner marginal portion of the arm 15, when said arm 15 is in its normal or working position as illustrated in Figure l of the accompanying drawings.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a stove grate constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in. practice except as hereinafter claimed.
1 claim:
In combination with stove stri cture including a grate frame, the inner marginal portions of the side members of the grate frame being provided with undercut recesses, a grate underlying the frame and supported for rotary movement, said grate comprising a plurality of arcuate bars, outstanding lugs carried by the central portions of the bars, said lugs being adapted to pass through the recesses of the frame, and means for normally limiting the movement of the grate with reseect to the frame, said bars having portions at all times extending partially within the frame but below the upper surface of the adjacent portions of the frame, the lugs being of a length to extend above the frame when moving between the side members of the frame.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
JULES A. BASTIEN.
