To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. WVAREAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Delinting Drying Tumblers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the art of laundry apparatus and'more especially to drying machines, as for instancethe tumbler type, the purpose of this invention being to remove the lint from the air after its passage through the drying chamber. In this way such lint is prevented from passing through the fan which is used for forcing the. air through the machine, and such lint will also not be allowedto pass to the outside atmosphere or to be further circulated through the machine.
The tumbler type of drying apparatus includes, in a general way, an air chamber, a heating chamber, and a drying chamber, all of these chambers having communication so that air from the outside atmosphere can be forced by means of a fan located in the air chamber through the heating chamber in which is enclosed som means for heating the air, thence through the cylinder of fo'raminous material in which the laundry is placed for drying and which receives a backward and forward rotating motion, from which point the air is forced back In such device this course just. re-cited or blown by means of the fan through an outlet to the atmosphere surrounding the machine casing. This invention might be embodied in different forms of structure but the preferred form will be fully understood from the following description and claims considered in connection with the-accompanying drawings.

By means of a fan indicated at 1 in Fig. 2, fresh air from the outside atmosphere is forced through the warming chamber, not shown in the present drawings, thence through the drying chamber 2 within which is enclosed the tumbler with its foraminous wall 3, from which point the air is f rced into air space 6 and back to the fan again to be forced through the same circuit or to be partly forced to the outside atmosphere,
as the case may be. A door 4 hinged to the tor 31 which drives pinion 30 and in turn the meshing gear 28 which carries pinion 29, gear 27 meshing with pinion 29 and the main gear 26 on one of the trunnions of the tumbler, backward and forward motion is transmitted to the drying cylinder 3 and likewise to the ratchet 23 mounted upon the shaft of gear 26, this ratchet 23 having cooperation with pawl 24 mounted upon the gear 22 which is loosely mounted upon the trunnion of gear 26. Then by ineansof a chain or belt connection 32 between sprockets 22 and 33, operation of the delinting conveyor 16 upon shaft 34 is effected; that is, when shaft 25 with its ratchet 23 is operating in clockwise direction, pawl 24: during the reverse direction riding freely upon ratchet 23. The mechanism for giving the intermittent backward and forward motion to the tumbler 3 is not shown herein as this means is well known in the art.

The screen member 10 which is hinged at 13 to angle, iron-37, consists of a. mesh 38 provided with reinforcing U shaped strips 41 and also wiper felts 39 secured in any suitable manner to the strips 41. The felt strip. at the bottom is also secured to the angle bar as shown in Fig. 6. These felt strips keep the lint out of the main part of the machine casing. Strips 35 extend across the mesh as a bearing surface for rollers 14.
The other part of the deli'nting device as shown in Fig. 5 is termed a lint conveyor which consists of four blades 35* arranged at 90 upon shaft 34. These blades may be of any suitable rigid material and are provided at their edges Withwiping strips 36 and are also arranged in overlapping relation about the axis 34 as shown at 42 in Fig. 5. This part of the device is so arranged that the wiper felts 36* neatly wipe over the lower end portion of plate 8 and also over the floor of the casing. An inclined false bottom section 44 is also-provided the incline of this bottom section or plate 44'being determined by the path described by the edges of the wiper felts 36. In this way, the deposited lint ismmoved from the lower portion of the chamber in front of and below the lint Leeaeoa collector and is transferred or conveyed to the pocket formed in the front corner of the machine casing and is prevented from being spread through this part of the inachine casing. The upper end of the inclined false bottom member 44 is secured to the angle iron 37 as. shown in Fig. 2.
From the above it will be seen that the lint carried by the air from the drying chamber ,will be forced through the p-as-' sage-way between the wall members 8 and 9 and deflected by the curved member 8 over against the screen member '10, the air being allowed to pass on through the screen. This lint carrying more or less moisture which it has accumulated upon its passing through the drying chamber will accumulate upon the screen member 10 during-its periods of rest. Operation of the rollers 14 will cause a rearward swinging and subsequent suddenreturn of :the screen member to its seat 12, accompanied by a decided jarring motion which will free the lint from the screen member 10 and allow it to fall upon the blades 35. Then, upon operation of shaft 34 at intervals, the lint received upon the horizontal blades 35 will be thrown forwardly and formed into the pile 43 in the front part of the main casing, door 44' allowing removal of such lint as desired.
An air intake is indicated at 45 and the. drive shaft for the fan at 46.
What I-claim is:
1. In a drying machine, the combination of an air chamber, a heating chamber, a drying chamber, means for causing flow of air through said several chambers, a rock ably mounted perforate lint collecting mem-. ber arranged at an angle to the path of airafter its passage through the drying chamber, and means for rocking said lint collecting member to remove the lint therefrom.

In a drying machine, the combination of a screen and fan chamber, a heating chamber, a drying chamber, means for forcing air through said several chambers, a rockably mounted lint collector arranged at an incline so as to intercept the lint ladened air after its passage through said drying chamber, means supporting said collector in normal rest position, and means for momentarily rocking said collector away from said supporting means, said-collector being adapted to return and normally rest upon said supporting means.
5. In a drying machine, the combination of an air chamber, a heating chamber, a drying chamber. means for causing flow of air through said several chambers, a perforate lint collector arranged at an incline to the path of air after its passage through said drying chamber, means for jarring said collector to remove the lint therefrom, and a lint conveyor located in the path of the lint upon its removal from said collecting member.
6. In a drying machine, the combination of an air chamber, a heating chamber, a drying chamber, means for causing flow of air through said several chambers, a perforate lint collector arranged at an incline to the path of air after its passage through said drying chamber, means for jarring said collector to remove the lint therefrom, a lint conveyor located in the path of the lint upon its removal from said collecting member, and means for intermittently op erating said lint conveyor.
7. In a drying machine, the combination of an air chamber,,a heating chamber, a drying chamber, a rotary container in said drying chamber, means for rotating said container, means for causing flow of air through said several chambers, a perforate lint collector arranged at an incline to the pat-h of air after its passage through said drying chamber, means for jarring said collector to remove the lint therefrom, a lint conveyor located in the path of the lint after its rem-oval from said collecting member, and means for automatically operating said lint conveyor from said container.
8. In a drying machine, the combination of an air chamber, a heating chamber, a drying chamber, means for causing flow of air through said several chambers, a perforate lint collector arr: nged at an incline to the path of air after its passage through said drying chamber, means for jarring said collector to remove the lint therefrom, and a rotatable lint conveyor located in the path of the lint upon its removal from said collecting member.
9. In a drying machine, the combination of an. air chamber, a heating chamber, a drying chamber, means for air through said several chambers, and a perforate lint collecting member rockably causing flow of mounted at an angle to the path of the air after its passage through said drying chamber.
10. In a drying machine, the combination of an air chamber, a heating chamber, a drying chamber, a drying cylinder'located in said drying chamber, means for rotating said cylinder back and forth, means for causing flow of air through said several chambers, a perforate lint collecting member arranged to receive the air after its passage through said drying chamber, means for operating said lint collecting member to remove the lint therefrom, a lint conveyor located in the path of the lint after its removal from said collecting "member, means for intermittently operating said conveyor, said last named means being operated by the said means for rotating the said drying cylinder.
11. In a dryin machine, the combination of an air cham er, a. heating chamber, a drying chamber, a drying cylinder located in said drying chamber, means for rotating said cylinder back and forth, means for causing flow of air through said several chambers, a perforate lint collecting member arrange d to receive the air after itspassage through said drying chamber, means for operating said lint collecting member to remove the lint therefrom, a rotatably mounted lint conveyor located in the path of the lint after its removal from said collecting member, means for intermittently operating said conveyor, said last named means having a drive connection with the shaft of said drying cylinder, said drive connection comprising gears upon the shafts of said drying cylinder and said conveyor, a. belt connection between said gears and a pawl and ratchet mechanism between the shaft of said drying cylinder and the said gear upon said last named shaft whereby said conveyor will receive intermittent operation from said drying cylinder operating mechanism. In a drying machine, a casing enclosing an air chamber, a heating chamber, a drying chamber, means for causing flow of air through the said several chambers, a lint collector, a curved'plate having its concave face toward said lint collector and arranged to deflect the air to said collector after its passage through said drying chamber, means for operating said lint collector to dischar e lint therefrom, a conveyor located below tie main part of said collector, the bottom portion of said casing forming a pocket to receive the lint from said conveyor and extending upwardly from a point substantially below the axis of said conveyor toward said collector, said conveyor being so arranged as to make wiping contact with the lower edge portion of said deflector and said inclined floor whereby the lint will be efl'ectively stored in said pocket.

In a drying machine, the combination of an air chamber, a heating chamber, a drying chamber, said chambers being enracaaoa closed by the machine casing, a door in said casing, means for causing flow of air through said several chambers, a rockably mounted arranged at an angle to the path of air after its. passage through the drying chambar, and means for rocking said lint collecting member to remove the lint therefrom, said means comprisinga lever mounted in front of said collector and having on one end thereof a roller adapted to contact with said collector, .a" spring controlled rod having its one end connected to the other end of said lever, a roller carried by the other end of said rod, and means carried by said casing" door for momentary engagement with said roller upon operation of said door for operating said rod and lever mechanism against the tension of said spring thereby effecting operation of said collector.
18. In a drying machine, the combination of an air and blower chamber, a heating chamber, a drying chamber, means for causing flow of air through said several chambers, a curved deflector plate extending from said drying chamber and adapted to deflect the air from said drying chamber, a lint collector arranged "to receive the air upon deflection from said plate, stop means to determine the extreme positions of said collector, said collector, in its normal position being adapted to rest at an incline upon said stop means, and means for moving said collector away from its normal osition and then releasing the same where y said collector will return by gravity against said rest stop with a jarring action and thereby discharge the lint therefrom.
19. In a drying machine, the combination of an air and blower chamber, a heating chamber, a. drying chamber, means for causing flow of air through said several champe-rforate lint collecting memberbers, a'curved deflector plate extending from 1 to rest at an incline upon said stop means,
and means for moving said collector away from its normal position whereby said collector"may return by gravity against said rest stop with a jarring action, and thereby discharge the lint therefrom.
20. In a delinting device for drying machine, a lint collector comprising a perforate sheet member having its edges reinforced, wiper felts secured along the reinforced edge portions, a supporting; member meaeoa for said perforate member, hinge connection between said perforate member and said support and bearing strips extending across the face of said perforate member between said reinforced means for co-action with operating members.
21. In a delinting device for drying ma.- chines, a lint conveyor comprising a shaft member, a plurality of plates mounted at an angle to each other upon said shaft, each of said plates extending about said axis and overlapping an adjacent plate member, and wiper felt secured along the edges of said plate members.

In a drying machine, a casing enclosing an air chamber, a heating chamber, a drying chamber, means for causing flow of air through said several chambers, a lint conveyor, a curved plate having its concave face toward said lint collector and arranged to deflect the air to said collector after its passage through said drying chamber, means for operating aid'lint collector to discharge lint therefrom, a conveyor located below the main part of said collector, said casing being formed to provide a pocket to receive the lint from said conveyor, one wall of said pocket being inclined and having wiping engagement with said conveyor during its operation, said conveyor making wiping contact also with said deflector plate whereby the lint will be effectively stored in said pocket, and means for allowing removal of the lint from said pocket.

In a drying machine, the combination of an air chamber, a heating chamber, a drying chamber, said chambers being enclosed by the machine casing, a door in said casing, means for causing flow of air through the said several chambers, a lint collector arranged to receive the air after its passage through the drying chamber, means for discharging lint from said collector, said means being controlled by the opening of said door.

In a drying machine, the combination of an air chamber, a heating chamber, a drying chamber, said chambers being enclosed by the machine casin a door in said casing, means for causing ow of air through the said several chambers, a lint collector arranged to receive the air after its passage through the drying chamber, means for discharging lint from said collector, said means being controlled by the closing of said door.
25. In a drying machine, the combination of an air chamber, a heating chamber, a drying chamber, said chambers being enclosed by the machine casing, a door in said casing, means for causing fiow of air through the said several chambers, a lint collector arranged to receive the air after its passage through the drying chamber, means for discharging lint from said collector, said means being controlled by the opening and closing of said door.
26. A drying machine, comprising a casing provided with a drying chamber, a rotatable work container therein, a lint collecting device, and a lint removing device operated by said container.
27. A drying machine, comprising a casing provided with a drying chamber, a work container therein rotatable alternately in opposite directions, a lint collecting device, and a rotatable lint removing device actuated by said container and rotatable in one direction only.
28. A drying machine, comprising a casing provided with a drying chamber, means for producing the flow of air therethrough, and a lint collecting device located in the current of air after it passes out from the drying chamber to collect lint therefrom, said device being so arranged as to collect the lint on a lower exposed surface from which it may fall by gravity.
29. A drying machine, comprising a casing provided with a drying chamber, means for producingthe flow of air threrethrough, a lint collecting device located in the current of air after it passes out from the drying chamber to collect lint therefrom, said device being so arranged as to collect the lint on a lower exposed surface from which it may fall by gravity, and means for jarring said device to facilitate removal of lint therefrom.
