Application filed September 27, 1920. Serial No. 413,016. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFPED E. SoHALLnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maywood, in the county of Lewis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot Feed for Automobiles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
An object of the invention is to provide means for operating the carburetor of an automobile or similar motor driven vehicle 7 either by or through the agency of a foot actuated member or pedal or through a hand actuated member or lever under such conditions as to provide for the control of the throw or extent of opening of the carburetor and the limitation thereof to such an extent as to control the speed of operation of the vehicle and insure a fixed rapidity of feed of the fuel with a full stroke movement of the operating member which, in connection with taxi cab and like hired vehicle service is important as a means of maintaining a check upon the drivers of such vehicles; and with these objects in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a feed mechanism embodying the invention applied in the operative position to an automobile structure of the Ford type.
Figure 2 is a side view of the same.
Figure 3 is a detail view or" the rocker.
Figure 4 is a similar view of the bracket upon which the rocker is mounted and by which connection is made with the frame or a fixed part of the vehicle.
Figure 5 is a similar view of the foot operated member.
Figure 6 is a view of the hand lever con nection and its relation to the carburetor actuating rod.
T he device consists essentially of a rocker 10 which in the construction illustrated is represented by an annular disk having a diammetrical cross bar or bridge piece 11 pivotally connected as at 12 to a bracket 13 which is adapted to be secured by means of a bolt let or the equivalent thereof to a water pipe or other fixed element of the automobile structure as a means of supporting the rocker in position for oscillatory movement in opposite directions under the control of an operating member'such as a pedal rod 16 of which the bearing terminal 17 18 arranged near the floor 18 of the car body within convenient reach of the foot of the car driver. The rocker is provided with an annular series of openings 19 for selective engagement by the lower end 20 of the pedal rod, a cotter pin 21 being engaged with the extremity of said rod to maintain the same in its adjusted relation with the rocker and permit of variation in the adjustment of the rod with relation to the rocker in the direction of the path of oscillatory movement of the latter.
Extending from the rocker and connected therewith at a point in opposite relation with the fulcrum of the rocker from the point of connection of the operating member or pedal rod is a carburetor actuating rod 22, one terminal 23 of which is selectively engageable with the openings in the rocker and is adapted to be secured at the desired adjustment by a cotter pin 23, and connected at the other end with the carburetor 24: to the end that when the rocker is moved in one direction or the other the carburetor is opened or closed, and the throw of the rocker, depending upon the point of adjustment of the operating member therewith, will determine the extent of opening movement of the carburetor and hence the rapidity of feed of the fuel to the engine.
The carburetor actuating rod is preferably provided at an intermediate point with a swivel joint 25 to permit of relative revoluble movement of the extremities of said rod to adapt the same to the relative movements of the rocker and the carburetor cut off.
Also there is a connection between the carburetor actuating rod and the hand lever 26 of the vehicle, consisting of a rod 27 connected with said hand lever and having an eye 28 slidingly mounted upon the carburetor actuating rod and adapted for engagement with a stop pin or shoulder 28 of the latter to permit of movement of the car buretor actuating rod by the hand lever as a means of opening the carburetor when it is preferred to actuate the latter in this way rather than'by means of the pedal rod. It will be noted that the inner or rear end of the carburetor rod is adjustable with relation to the rocker also in the direction of the path of movement of the rocker as described in reference to the pedal rod, by
engaging the terminal thereof with diii'erent openings'inthe rocker, so that'a giventhro'vv imparted to the rocker by the operation of either the pedal rod or the hand lever will cause a limited throW of the carburetor actuating rod and hence a determinable opening movement of the carburetor, so that by a selected relative engagement of the carburetor actuating rod and the operating member With the rocker the extent of opening' movement of the carburetor may be controlled, and so that full stroke movement or depression ofthe pedal rod Will result in a predetermined opening movement 03: the carburetor and hence a predetermined supply 01": fuel to the engine.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. In a fuel feeding mechanism for automobiles, a throttle attaching rod, foot'-op erablemeans tor, said rod, manually operable means for said rod having a slip connection thereon, a stop for said manually operable means on said throttle actuating rod, a rocker having a plurality of openings therethrough in a path around its' axls, said rod having a swivel intermediate itsleng't'h and adjacent one end, said'end being selectively attachable in said openings, and an actuating element for said rocker selectively attachable to said openings.
2. In a fuel feeding mechanism for automobiles, a throttle attaching rod, foot-operable means for said rod, manually operable means for said rod having a slip connection thereon, a stop for said manually operable means on said throttle actuating rod, a rocker consisting of a ring and a. bridge spanning the ring, a bracket for attachment to a part of the automobile and pivoted to said bridge in offset relation, said ring having a plurality of openings therethrough and in a path around the axis of the rocker, said rod being selectively attachable in said opening, and an actuating element for said rocker selectively attachable in said opening.
In testimony whereof I aihi; my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
ALFRED SCHALLER. Witnesses 05E. CAsoN, M. W001).
