N0.47,570, Patented Feb.7,l874.
UNITED STATES ELI OVERTON, OF UTIOA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT PATENT OFFICE.
TO NOAH A. LEWIS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENERS FOR THE MEETING RAILS OF SASHES.
Specificationforming part of Letters Patent No. 147,570, dated Febzuary 17, 1874; application filed December 13, 1873.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
`Be it known that I, ELI OvEItToN, of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of N ewYork, have invented a new Improvement in a Sash Lock, Holder, and Fastener, and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, with the letters of reference marked thereon, forming :i part of this specication.
My invention is the lock, which is made of metal and secured to the top rail of the lower sash. by means of a screw, which forms it axis. lt has two hooks, the use of which is to engage the staple or staples on the face of the` upper sash, while the other enters a slot or slots in the strip, which prevents a lateral n'i'ofeinent of the lower sash. It has also an arm, which is enlarged at its end to form a bearing to the thumb or linger that operates it.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a window as seen from the inside.. Fig. 2 is a plan view or section on line m a: of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference denote like parts in all the figures.
A is the frame of a window, having inner and outer strips, and parting beads to form grooves for the sash to slide vertically and prevent a lateral movement of the same. B is the upper, and C the lower, sash. F is the lock or support, which is secured 'to the lower sash O by the screw a, which forms it axis. Staples or rests b are fastened to the upper sash at several points to bear against the hook d to hold the two sashes together, while the hook e enters the slots f, shown by dotted lines, in the strap H.
The lock or fastening is released by pressing the forenger or thumb against the arm g and drawing it inward.
My invention is simple and effectual, as well as economical.
What I claim as new, and my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The lock or fastening' F, in combination with a series of staples or rests attached to the upper sash, and a series of slot-s in the inner side of the strap or bead, as and for the purpose set forth.
