Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALANSON QUIGLEY, OF SHELDRAKE, NEW YORK.
APPARATUS FOR RAISING- AND LOWERING CARRIAGE-TOPS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 14,735, dated April 22, 1856.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I,-ALANsoN QUIGLEY, of Sheldrake, in the county of Seneca, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Lowering and Raising Carriage-Tops; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a sectional View; Fig. 2 is a perspective view; cog lever, A, box, B, cog wheel, C, pawl or catch, D, rod, E.
The box, B, is fastened to the armrail of the seat by screws or otherwise, and is for the purpose of securing the cog lever, A, and cog wheel, C, also, to prevent the lining of the top from being cut by the cogs and on which is a notch for the pawl or catch, D, to slide into when the operator does not wish to throw the top entirely down. The cog lever, A, is fastened in front of the cog wheel, C. Cog wheel, C, is secured to the rod, E. Rod, E, runs parallel with the seat and is connected with the joints of the top. The pawl or catch, D, is secured to the cog lever, A, and slides into a notch on box, B, when the operator does not wish to throw the top entirely down, but if he desires to let the top entirely down he can throw the pawl or catch, D, back into a groove cut in the cog lever, A. I use cast iron for the above described machine, except the rod, E, which can be either cast or not.
With this machine I am enabled to operate on the top with greater facility and ease, and, also, it secures the top from being cut and broke by its preventing the top from fallingentirely down.
lVhat I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The box, B, cog lever, A, pawl, D, and cog wheel, C in combination.
ALANSON QUIGLEY.
