' ADA x. Hannan', or New YORK, N. Y.
DISPLAY BOX.
Application led March 25, 1921. Serial No. 455,66.
To @ZZ w71 om t may concern:
Be it known that I, ADA K. HARNED, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and use-y ful Improvement in Display Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in boxes, particularly in boxes for displaying or exhibiting flat goods, such as handkerchiefs, underwear, and the like; allthough it'may be adapted as a game container board, such as a pocket chess board or a solitaire lay-out board, but it is primarily designed for a counter or show case display box.
My invention specifically relates to an attachment whereby an ordinary box for any purpose can be converted into a counter or show oase, exhibition or display box without changing the construction of the ordinary box for such purpose, and the invention has for its object the production of a display box quickly convertible into a counter or show case, exhibition or display box without removing the contents or disturbing the original package thereof.
Heretofore there have been no boxes manufactured that would act as a counter and show case display box. The usual counter display was effected by propping up the box either by means of a separate rack or support or by merely bracing the box against a stack of other boxes, and the show case display was effected by merely placing in the box cover the box body with its contents exposed. The device as disclosed in this invention provides a box or an attachment to a box that accomplishes both these results, and which has still a further advantage that when usedvas a show case display box it will stack more readily with a pile of similar underlying boxes.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective top view of a handkerchief box embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a perspective view' of the box in counter display form;
Figure 8 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure l;
Figure 4: is a sectional view on the line 4 4 of Figure 3;
vFigure 5 is a perspective view of the box in show case display form; and
Figure 6 is a perspective view showing size appropriate to the article of manufacture contained.
To the back of the box body 7 is attached, preferably by means of a fabric hinge 9, a brace l0 consisting of a piece of cardboard of a width corresponding to the width of the box body but somewhat shorter than the length of the box body. This brace is also connected at its opposite end to the top box body by means of a flexible or fabric hinge 11 which is designed to embrace one box Harige of the box cover, but is not secured thereto. For convenience in packing or stacking, a filler piece of cardboard 12- is secured to the bottom of the box body to fill up the space between thel end of the brace l0 and the box end to present a more uniform surface for packing. A pull strap 13 is attached between the box bottom and the filler piece 12,
The method of setting up the counter display position of the box as shown in Figure 2 is usually accomplished by swinging the box body 7 upon the hinge 9 until its end flange abuts the end flange of the box co-ver 8 and then pushing the end of the brace l0 carrying the hinge ll against the inside of the opposite end flange of the boX cover. The box body is then held in an inclined position, such position being predetermined by the length of the brace 10.
It might be stated that the angle at which the box body is set in the box cove-r is so arranged that it will when placed on a counter present the goods practically vertically to a person of average height looking down toward the counter.
The show casedisplay position of the box as shown in Figure 5 is accomplished by swinging the box body 7 outward on the hinge 9 and inverting and swinging the box cover 8 inward on the hinge l1 until it rests with its top surface abutting the brace 10, which in turn abuts the bottom of the box body. It will be perceived that the box in this position is so arranged that it will it over an underlying box body of similar size and it is possible to arrange quite a stack of boxes together and form practically a rigid column if the show caseis very deep or the display table very low.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, anddesire to secure -by Letters Patent, is: 1 f 'f A display device comprising a boX oonsisting of a cover and body, a ieg member,
5 hingedfto the back of the boX body and to the top of the box cover by a fiexiblevhinge ieXible binge adapted to allow certain play tothe said leg memberrto permit the same to be braced against the inside of the flange of the box *cover when the devine isy infoperative position, thereby removing the strain lfrom the flexible hinge. embracing a flange of the boX cover, said ADA K. HARNED. Y
