To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VILLIAM H. DENNEY, a citizen of the United States, and a. resident of South Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Vanity Case, of

which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.

This invention relates to cont-alners and contemplates more particularly an nnprovement in vanity cases which are employed as combined containers or packages for rouge and face powder compacts.

In the common forms of twin containers for rougeand face powder compacts which are now in general use and on the market,

the same are usually ofa circular form con sisting of a cylindrical body divided transversely into separate compartments for the rouge compact and theface powder compact. Under this construction access is gained to the separate compartments either by lifting up one of the compartments which covers the other or by providing a. hinged cover at opposite ends, both of which forms are more or less inconvenient to the user due to the fact that access cannot be gained to the both compartments simultaneously. In the type which is provided with the hinged cover at its opposite ends, the expense of providing two mirrors is entailed. In the other on long onnon-circular forms of compact containers which have the. rouge and face powder compartments alongside of each other, the vanity case must be small enough for conveniently fitting the palm of a womans hand and when such forms are used, it has been found that the compacts contained thereinare too small to be of practical value. Briefly stated the invention accomplishes the foregoing objects by constructing a twin compact container or vanity case of the convenient circular type provided with a single regulation hinged cover and a single mirror, which cover when opened discloses an upper compartment in which the regulation size of compact is arranged with an applicator or pufl? therefor, the said upper compartment being so connected with the body as to permit of its lateral swinging movement to uncover a lower compartment in which a second compact with its applicator or pufl' is located whereby the user may simultaneously have access to both compacts while employing the same mirror for the application of the contents.

The invention further contemplates a van ity case which is extremely simple in its construction and mode of operation, inexpensive to manufacture and produce and one which is highly eilicient in its purpose.

lVith the above recited and other objects in View, the invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the claims are expressed.

Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, 10 designates the substantially cylindrical body of the case which is closed at its lower end by a bottom 11. The body 10 is cut away for approximately one-half of its circumference to a distance from its upper end substantially two-thirdsof the height thereof, while the upper edge of the cutaway portion is turned inwardly to provide a substantially semi-circular flange or shelf 12. A section consisting of a substantially semi-circular wall 13 and a disk-like bottom 14 is hingedly attached as at 15 to the body 10 and constitutes a trayor compartment for the face powder compact. The end of. the wall 13 opposite" to the hingedly connected end is offset inwardly as at 16 and is. provided with a circumferential outwardly projecting bead 17 which is designed to be received in a complementary circumferential groove 19 formed intheinneruperiphery of the body 10 for the purpose of locking the container or compartment section againstrehtive axial movement when said section is in closed relation to the body 10.. When in closed position the inwardly ofi'set end 16 lies snugly within. the meeting end-of the body andthe semi-circular wall 13 of the section completes with the body 10 a circular. upper end over which. a hinged cover 18 is adapted to fit. The lower end of the. body 10 and thebottom. 11 constitute a compartment for a rouge compact which when the powder tray or compartment is closed underlies the same and which when said powder compartment is opened is exposed thereby sufliciently to permit the user to gain access thereto as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing. In order to limit the opening of the powder compartment or tray which swings laterally on the hinge 15, guide grooves 19 are formed in the under side of the disk or bottom 14 and stops 20 consisting of up-struck portions of the flange or shelf 12 are received. in said grooves and eoact with the inner ends 21 thereof as illustrated in Fig. 5. To preclude any possibility of cutting the user, the edge of the bottom or disk 14 which lies between the opposite ends of the semi-circular wall 13 is bent upon itself as at 22. The flange or shelf 12 serves as a support for the powder compartment in its open and closed positions and during the movement of the same from oneof said positions to the other.

In use and operation the user in order to gain access to the contents of the several compartments swings the cover 18 to its openposition and swings the upper compartment or section to the full open position as illustrated infFig. 1 thereby simultaneously exposing the compacts in both compartments for use. When finished, the user merely closes'the upper compartment and the cover 18 which locks the upper compartment in closed position and against accidental opening as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. By constructing the case in the manner heretofore set forth, it is obvious that a more convenient article of this character has been provided which at the same time eliminates the necessity of employing two mirrors as is now required by the present construction of devices of this character.

I claim:

1. A container including a body having a bottom and a flange formed with a cutout portion, and a tray comprising a bottom and a flange, said tray hinged to the body to swing laterally, the flange of the tray forming a closure for the cutout portion of the body.

2.-A container including a body havin" a flange formed witha cutaway portion and a tray comprising a bottom. and a flange, said tray hinged to the body for lateral swinging movement through the cutaway portion, the flange of the tray forming a closure for the cutaway portion of the body when the tray is in closed position, and interengageable means at the meetin edges of the flanges of the tray and body or preventing relative axial movement therebetween.

3. A container including. a body having a bottom and a flange formed with a cut-out portion communicating with the upper open end of the flange, a tray comprising a bot-- tom and a flangehaving hinged connection to. the. body for lateral swinging movement through the cut-out portion of the body, the-said. tray when swung inwardly defining therebeneath a container. compartment and when swung outwardly serving to expose said compartment, the said flan e of the tray constituting when closed a c osure for the cut-out portion, and a cover hinged to the body and engageable over the flange of the body and tray when closed to hold the tray in closed position relative to the body.

4. A cosmetic container comprising a body including a bottom and an annular upstanding wall formed with a cut-out portion adjacent its upper end, an inwardly projecting flange at the lower edge of the cut-out portion, a tray comprising a bottom and an upstanding flange, said tray hinged to the body for lateral swinging movements, the flange of the tray formi a closure for the cut-out portion of the fiody when in closed relation thereto, and interengageablc means provided respectively on the bottom of the tray and on the inwardly projecting flange of the body for limiting the outward lateral swinging movement of the tray.
