UN I'T D STATE 'nnwenn ELIAS voN TELL, dr eowmmaoneg swee snar s martini To all whom it may concern? I Be it, known that I, EDWAR ELIAS VON TELL, of Gotte'nborg, Swedenjswedish s'ubject, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Ships Hatches, of which the following is aspeoi-5 fication; v v I i This invention relates toships hatches and has for its object to"-provide an improved construction andarrangement ofhatohes designedto-facilitate the operations of lifting and:lmve'ring the hatches foropening and closing the llOlClOf' avessel and to render the hatches secure against'unauthorized or aceidental lifting after they have been-brought into their closed position.
The improved constructionand arrangement of ships hatches accordingto-thepres entinventioncomprises a pair ofhatch members, which m'ay have similaror dissimilar dimensions, hinged at their adjacent edges to a= beam or barof any suitable material and cross I sectional profile in such a manner that the free edgesof the hatch members can fold downwards but not upwards from thehorizontalor closed-position ofthehatch,
said-beam being adapted to be engaged by therliftin'g tackle ofa. derricltorthe "like lifting device to lift the pair of hatch members at their adj acentedges' in order, to: open the ships -hold,ithus allowing. the two hatch members to swinginwards upontheir' hinges. andtofold together: on being lifted clear of the hatch zcoaming; whereupon they can be swung to one side and depositedron: the deck, if desirednwhilei inorder to close tliehold the folded'pair offhatch members is brought over. the hold. and lowered: the" depending free edges of the hatch memBers'ifii-st" engaging the hatch coa-mingand bein'gthe'n s'e'paratedlto enable" these edgesto' slide apart upon the hatch coamingkund'er the action of the. weight ofi the parts, until the sai'd hatch members come into? the closed position forming. asingle rigi dlhat'ch't which -is thus locked in its.5closed position by it's oWnweight 5 alone;
5 In. order: that the nature of the invention may be clearly understood one-way of carry ing out the. same willv now be described with reference to the accompanyingdrawings in which Fig. 1 is an end view ofthe two hinged hatch members resting with their lower edges upon the "hatch (roaming Fig. 2 is a similar view showinga'aniarrangeinent for separatingv the lower-edges of hooked into the said, shackles; pose ofliftinglthe'beam and'thehatch' members- If desired however the'hooks, 11 may be passed directly in'toithe holes'in the ver-- the-depending hatch melnbers when: being lowered into closed. position} Fig, isi wsflflilar view; showing th h t h members y closed andself-l'ocle 111;: positiongn 5 i p 5 Fig. 4 illustrates a detail. ii

Inthe arrangement shown the hatch memhers are of wood but they-f instead be 5 made. of: anysuitable metal or other ,mater551. Two holesare provided inthevertical memher of, the 'F -beim 3 at about equalirdistancetfrorii the ends I of thevv beam, andlp referably shackles such as s hown at 1'2 inFigs.

In this" ase the Hatch members 1 ga d 2"ar'e respectively in Fig, in order'toenahle the hooks 1 1 to" be passed into the s" I whenthe hatchesare in closed position;

one another.
trated channel bars are employed for this purpose; y
"In order to .raise'jand-openthe hatches from the closed position of the same shown in Fig. 3 the hooks 11 on the. end of slings 13 are insertedin the appropriate'holes provided in the vertical member'of the T-beam '3 orare passed into the shackles 12. The
hook. 22 at theend'of the lifting tackle of the ships derrick or the like power-operated lifting device is pass'e'd into the ring 23 connecting the slings 13 and the engine or motor is started. The T-b'eam3 is vertically I raised and the hatch members 1 and 2 hinged thereto commence to fold inwards towards .Byf continuing to lift, the hatch members are first'brought into their vertical position and are'then" raised completely clear of the hatch coaming; they can now beswung'to one side and be lowered on to any convenient part of the deck.-"
In closing the hatches the slings '13an'd hook 22 are applied as before and the hatches are brought by means of the derrick or the. like lifting. device-immediately over the centre partof the hold and are lowered into the position shown in Fig. t1-1with the lower. edges of "the depending hatch members resting upon 'the'hatch coaming. In
7 order to facilitate'the operation of separatingthe said lower edges of the hatch members 1 and 2'any convenient device may be employed. In one arrangement which has, been found very convenient anjadditional sling, 24; is applied in the manner shownflin the drawings. At thelowerend {of the said sling a flathookf 25 is secured which is passed into engagement over the lower edge of, the narrower hatch member 1, while the hook or ring26 atthe upper end of the sling 2 1 is brought into lifting engagement with thehook 22 of the liftingtackle.
[The additional. sling 24 is applied in this manner when "thehatch members '1 and 2 I have been lowered into a position somewhat as shown in Fig.1 in which the said hatch members are supported upright, orapproXi-.
mately so, upon. the hatch coaming. The
The additional sling 24 becomes taut and 1 takes the weight of the hatch member 1,.
liftin the same sons to separate the lower edge from that of the other hatch member 2 sufliciently to enable the said'lower"-'edges to slide apart the action of their own weight when being'lowered. -The engine or motor is now "reversed to a lower, whereu Jon the lower ed es of the hatch 'members v 1 engage the coaming and slide'apart thereon under the action of the weight of the parts as shown inFi u 2 in which the, slin s 13 are somewhat inclined to the vertical; 'Before the hatch members reach the'completely closed position the sling 24L becomes slack and 'must 'be disengaged from the hatch' member 1. The loweringisthen continued until the hatches assume the completely closedposition shown'in By lower- 1 ing the hook 22 slightly beyond said closed position the "slings 13' become slaclrand can bediseng aged. f v v The hatch members 1 and 2 are-nowdn their" completely closed and locked position and cannot be raised by leverageunder any part of their outer'edges but can only be raised by applying power tofthe central T-beams. j Thus the hatches automatically lock themselves by means of their own weight and .it'is'only necessary to adopt measures .for preventing the unauthorized use and handling of. the shipsWderrick or other lifting device in order to preventthe hatches from being opened at any timeother' than when'ordered' It-is also pointed out 'that'the'imp roved construction affordsxcon- I siderable economy of space owing to the hatches, when li ftedffor opening the hold,
automatically folding together and only requiringfa' comparat vely narrow space to a commodate them on deck.
ters Patent is f 1. Construction of ships hatches, co-m- V prising the combination with a pair of hatch members, of a beam, hinges/connecting the adjacent edgesof the hatch members to the beam arranged"to allow the hatch 'memb'ersf'to fold downwards when the beam is lifted, but not to'allow the hatch members to fold upwards above the closed position of the hatch members, andmeansf for enabling a lifting d evic'e toen'gage with the beam for lifting, removing, and lowering the hinged pair of hatch members to openand'cl'ose the hold of the vessel.
'2. Arrangement of ships hatches, comprising a pair of hatch members hinged at What I claim and'desire to secure by Let p their adjacent edges "to-a beam, means on the beamf'orengagingwith a lifting device to lift the beam and attached hatch members to allow said members to fold inwards to open the hold of the'vessel, and means for separating the lower edges of the dev pending hatch members when lowering said members into position on the hatch coaming to close the hold of the vessel.
3. In ships hatches, the combination with an inverted T-beam, of a pair of hatchmem bers hinged to the horizontal part of the beam,
other hatch member to the other edge of said horizontal part of the beam, the adja- I an inverted T-beam, of a pair of vhatch members hinged to the horizontal part of the beam, one hatch member to one edge and the other hatch member to the other edge of said horizontal part of the beam, the adjacent edges of the hatch members being arranged one hatch member to one edge and the to abut against the opposite sides of the ver-u tical part, ofthe beam whenthe hatches are in the closed position, and sha'cklessecured to the said vertical part of the beam toreceive the hooks of a sling for engagement by.
a lifting device.
5. In ships hatches, the combination with i an inverted T-beam, of a pair of hatch members hinged to the horizontal part of the beam, one hatch member to one edge and the other hatch member to the other edge of the said horizontal part of the beam, one hatch member having a smaller widththan the other hatch member, the adjacent edges of the hatch members being arranged to abut against the opposite sides of the verticalpart of the beam when the hatches are in the closed position, means on the said vertical part of the beam for engagement by a lifting device, and means for separating the lower edge of the hatch member having the smallest width hatch member 'when lowering the hatches into closed position.
In. testimony whereof I affix my signature,
EDWARD ELr s VON TELL. a
