METHOD OF PRODUCING STAPLES.
Application filed June 11,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TVVALTER WEBs'rnR BAILEY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of Vancouver,
in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Producing Staples, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the manufacture of staples, and the-object of the invention is to provide a process by means of which staples may be accurately, quickly and inexpensively manufactured.
I attain this object as illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a view of a staple constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is an edge view of the staple shown in Figure 1.
Similar figures of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
The staple according to the improved con struction consists simply of a single length of wire 1 which is split longitudinally to within a short distance ofone end, the
divided ends being then spread to form the bow legs 2 and 3 of the staple, as shown in Fig. 2. The points of the legs are sharpened as at i and5 whlle the opposite end of the wire is upset to form a head 6, there being left, however, between the head and the bow shaped portion a short length of the wire, as indicated at 7, so that the claw of 1921. Serial No. 476,724.
the hammer may be inserted under the head to Withdraw the staple.
Fromthe foregoing it will be seen that I" have devised a staple which is simple, inexpensive, and practical, and which can be driven or withdrawn with equal facility.
WVhat I claim as my inventionisz- 1. The herein described method of form ing a staple by splitting asingle length of stock for a portion of its length and shaping the split portions to provide the legs of the staple. i 2. The herein described method of form mg a staple, which consists in forming a head at one end of a length of stock and splitting the stock longitudinally to form the legs of the staple.- i
3. The herein described method of forming a staple which. consists in splitting a single length of stock to form the legs of the staple and enlarging the stock beyond the split portion to provide a head and a 55 neck connecting the head with the legs.
4i. A. method of producing staples which consists in upsetting one end of a blank to form a head slotting the blank longitudinally from the opposite end thereof-to and I point adjacent said head to form the legs of the staple andthen spreading said-legs apart.
Dated at Vancouver, B. (3., this 1st day of June. 1921. v
