Description

C. HUSEMAN. I CONVERTIBLE CHIgDs WAGON. COASTER,AND SCOOTER.
FILED MAR. 2,
Patented Jan. 23, 1923.
UNETEB fiTAiES PATENT fiFFllfii-E.
"CHARLES HUSEMAN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
CONVERTIBLE CHILDS WAGON, COASTER, AND SCOOTER.
Application filed March 2, 1922. Serial No. 540,400.
To all whom it may ICOWCGWL.
Be it known that 1, CHARLES HUSEMAN, a citizen of'the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Ohildrens Wagons, Coasters, and Scooters, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompai'iying drawing, forming a part said steering-end will be simplified, and
rendered more efficient and safe.
In my said prior patent, the braces for the convertible tongue or handle were made and shown in two separate members, having perforations at their outer ends engaged by separate brace-pins, which were carried by a brace-ring 011 said handle.
This has been simplified, and made safer, and more efficient, in the present invention, by doing away with said separate braces and brace-pins, and making the handlebrace in a single piece inverted V-shape.
In the drawings,
Fig. 1 is a front-elevation of my improved wagon, coaster and scooter, with the handle adjusted to a vertical position, which it occupies when the device is to'be used as a scooter, the upper portion of the handle being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a sectional side-elevation of the front end of the "machine, the section being taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a top plan-view of the improved brace-ring, detached from the handle.
The numeral 1 designates the platform of the vehicle, mounted on the usual cross-bars or supports 2, and arranged with longitudinal grip-bars or holding-rods 3, extending parallel with the edges of the platform.
In the present form ofmy invention. the front wheels 4; are mounted upon a swiveling-axle 5, the rear wheels (not shown) are mounted on the usual stationary axle. (not shown), but it is to be understood that but a single steering-wheel instead of two steering-wheels can be used, thereby making the device either three or four-wheeled, in the manner hereinafter described.
The said swiveling front-axle 5 is carried by the ClOW11-t11TI16Cl arms 6 of swiveling-brackets 7, Fig. 1, upon which the front end of the device is supported, in a fourwheeled vehicle.
To provide a single central steering-wheel instead of the pair of steering-wheels, it will only be necessary to reduce the size of the single steering-wheel and mount it on the axle 5 in the space between said down-turned arms 6 of the smaller one of said brackets T; but in such construction the said axle would be shortened, and the longer bracket 7 glvould be unnecessary, and could be omitte A rearwardly-extending brace 8 has its rear end fixed to the underside of the said platform 1 by means of a bolt 9, and is provided at its front end with a. center-bearing 11.
rt steering king-bolt 10 has its lower end squared or non-circular, and fixed to the said swiveling brackets 7 at the center of the length of the latter, and extends vertically therefrom through an aperture formed in the said center-bearing 11 of said brace 8, thence through registering apertures formed in the front cross-bars or supports 2, the platform 1, and a bearing-plate l2.
, Fixed on the upper end of the said steeringking-bolt 10, and resting upon said bearing-plate 12, is a tongue-bracket 14 having perforated vertical ears between which the inner end of atongue or handle 15 is pivotally mounted upon a bolt or rivet 16, the pivoted end of said handle being provided with a strengthening ring or thimble 17 secured in place by screws or nails 18.
Said bearing-plate 12 is secured to the upper surface of the said platform 1 by means of bolts 19.
Said handle 15 is provided with a crosshandle 15' that is located near the outer end of the former, and an additional or coasting cross-handle 15 is applied to the main handle 15 at a point about the center of the length thereof, so that in coasting the rider may conveniently grasp said coasting crosshandle, to steer the vehicle.
A brace-ring 20 is loosely mounted upon the said tongue or handle 15, at a point a short distance above the pivoted lower end thereof, and is supported and prevented from longitudinal movement on said handle by the heads of screws 21 which also fasten a metallic bearing-thimble 22 on sand handle,
between the latter and said ring; so that the handle may turn freely in said ring.
Perforated upperand lower ears 23 and 24 project outwardly from said brace-ring 20 in front of said thimble 22, and form a horizontal slot 25 between them so that the horizontal crotch 26 of an inverted V- shaped handle-brace 27 may be detachably mounted in said horizontal slot 25, when the device is to be used with the handle in a vertical position.
Therear ends of the said inverted V- shaped handle-brace 27 are pivotally at tached to the platform 1 by means of pivotbrackets 28, which are secured to the platform by means of bolts or rivets 29.
30 designates the journals which connect the ends of said inverted V-shaped handlebrace to said pivot-brackets 28.
A spring-ring 31 is loosely mounted to slide upon the said tongue or handle 15,
The operation.
The operation and use of my invention will be readily apparent from the above description, so that it need only be added that when the vehicle is to be used as a wagon the front end of said handle-brace 27 is detached from the said horizontal slot 25 of the brace-ring 20 carried by said tongue or handle 15, by raising the said spring-ring 31" to the position shown in dotted lines, (Fig. 2), and dropping orlowering said handle-brace downvagainst the platform 1, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, when said handle can be moved forward or backward when the device is to be used as a coaster or wagon.
, The said handle 15 is of course to be located in a vertical position when the device is in useas a scooter, as shown.
I claim 1. A convertible wagon, coaster and scooter, composed of a platform, a swiveling front-axle, rolling means on said axle, for supporting and steering the front portion of said platform; a steering king-bolt having its lower end connected to said swiveling front axle and extending up through an aperture in the platform to a point above the latter; a tongue-bracket fixed on the up per end of said steering king-bolt; a tongue or handle having its end pivotally attached to said tongue-bracket; a ring mounted to permit said handle to rotate within it and having a horizontal slot between upper and lower ears which project from its outer periphery; an inverted V-shaped handlebrace having its rear portion pivotally connected to said platform, and means for detachably holding the front portion of said brace between said upper and lower ears.
2. The combination with the elements mentioned in the above claim 1, a springring having a looking-arm extending downwardly therefrom and mounted to slide loosely on said tongue and adapted to engage the front portion of said brace, and detachably hold the same in position in said slot of said ring.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES HUSEMAN.
