A governor link 32 Figure 3 is a section substantially on connects the -governor and the sleeve 2 line 3 -3of Figure 2', andFigured is a sec through the niediunrof the-neutralizing device 5; The neutralizing device 5 is herein The general features of the recording shoW-n'as made in the form-of apair 0t semi- 50 I 2. The springs 52, as stated, are sufficiently circular elements 50 and 51 which encircle the shaft 31. The elements 50 and 51 are suitably suspended from the lower end of.
the sleeve 2, through the medium of a link 25 for each of the members 50 and 51. A spring or springs 52 maintain the clutch elements 50 and 51 spaced apart and prevent their gripping the shaft 31 ordinarily. These springs may be positioned at any suitable point. They are sufficiently strong to transmit any ordinary force from the governor to the indicator, but are weak enough to permit the approach of the clutch 1 elements 50 and 51 and their gripping upon ment 5() and at the shaft 31 in case of an extraordinary force being communicated to them from the the link 6 at spaced points between its ends.
The link 6 is provided between its ends with a socket or slot 63 within which lies the fulcrum member. One end 66 of this fulcrum members lies toward the pivot 65 from a line connecting the two pivots 61 and 62. The other end, 67, of the fulcrum member lies towards the swinging end of the link 6 from such a line. The mechanism 1 described may be employed single desired,
but I prefer that it be duplicated upo opposite sides of the shaft 31'.
As the shaft 31 rotates, the governor 3, the sleeve 2, and the neutralizing device 5 rotate with it. Such rotation tends to throw the governor 3 into a plane normal to the axis of the shaft 31. Such movement of the governor, communicated through the governor link 32 to the sleeve 2, tends to move the sleeve axially. The connection to the sleeve 2, however, is through the lever 6 and link 60 to the clutch elements and 51 and thence through the links 25 to the sleeve strong to resist the attempt of ordinary force to cause approach of the elements 50 and 51. However, if asudden extraordinary force tends to throw the governor ball more nearly into a plane normal to the axis of rotation, for instance, the tendency of the governor link 32 is to move upward. This movement is communicated through the lever 6 to the fulcrum 67. This then tends to bring the pivot points of the links more nearly into a line parallel with the axis: of the shaft 31 and overcomes the springs 52, at least to the extent of the force applied. This movement causes approachof the clutch elements 50 and 51 and they are caused to grip the shaft 31 thusto prevent axial movement of the neutralizing device and the sleeve 2 upon this shaft. Similarly a'inovement of the governor tending to pull downward upon the connecting link 32 will react through the lever 6 upon the fulcrum 66 to produce the same result in substantially the same manner. The result is that sudden shocks upon the governor cause the neutralizing device to grip the shaft 31 and to prevent axial movement of the sleeve 2, and consequently the indicator 1 is not affected thereby. During all of the time that the elements 50 and 51 grip the shaft 31 all parts are rotating with the shaft.-
hen the shock of the governors sudden movement is expended, the springs 52 again overcome the tendency to grip the shaft, and the device again becomes responsive to ordinary movements of the governor.
It will be noticed that clutch elements 50 and 51 form one member of the clutch, the other member being the shaft 31. As the clutch elements 50 and 51 are axially bodily movable upon the shaft, they may be taken as the movable member of the clutch, while the shaft, though rotatable, is yet fixed relative to the elements 50 and 51, and may bedescribed as the fixed clutch member.
l/Vhat I claim as my invention is:
' 1. The combination with an indicating device and a governor controlling the actuation thereof, of means operable by a sudden jar to neutralize the effect thereof upon said governor and indication device.
'2. The combination with an indicating device, an axially-movable sleeve controlling said indicating device by its axial position, and a governor operatively connected to said sleeve to control its axial position, of
means for preventing movement of the sleeve under the lnfiuence of sudden movements.
3. A neutralizing device for a governoroontrolled indicator comprising a clutch member adapted to be moved bodily relativeto a complemental fixed clutch member by the governor, and means retaining said clutch members disengaged under the application of normal working forces, said means permitting the engagement of said clutch members under the influence of extraordinary-forces.
4:. A. neutralizing device for a governorcontrolled indicator comprising a shaft forming a fixed clutch member, a complemental clutch member axially movable upon said shaft in accordance with changes in the governors position, and means retaining said clutch members disengaged under the application of normal working forces, said means being yieldable to permit the engagement of said clutch members under the influence of extraordinaryforces.
5. A neutralizing device for a governor-.
controlled indicator comprising a rotatable shaft, a split sleeve axially movable upon said shaft in accordance With changes in the governors position, a spring normally separating the ends of said sleeve, said spring being yieldable only under the application of extraordinary force from the governor.
6. A neutralizing device for a governorcontrolled indicator comprising a rotatable shaft, a split sleeve axially movable upon said shaft, a spring normally separating the ends of said sleeve, a lever pivoted at one side of the split in said sleeve, a link connected to its opposite end for transmitting movements of the governor thereto, a clutch link connected to the sleeve at opposite sides of the split, said clutch link having fulcrum engagement With said lever between its ends, whereby said spring is yieldable to permit gripping of the shaft by the sleeve upon the application of extraordinary forces through the governor link.
7. In combination, a shaft, clutch ele- Inents axially movable upon said shaft, a governor, actuating means connecting the governor and clutch elements to cause movement of the latter corresponding with movement of the governor, and yieldable means for preventing gripping of the clutch elements upon the shaft under ordinary Working forces, butyieldable to permit gripping under extraordinary forces.
8. In combination, a governor, a shaft,
clutch elements axially movable upon said. shaft, yieldable means normally preventing gripping of the clutch elements upon the shaft, a governor link connected to the governor, and means operatively connecting said governor link and the clutch elements,
and operable by a movement of the gov ernor link of extraordinary force in either direction to overcome said yieldable means to permit gripping of the clutch elements upon the shaft.
9. In combination, a fixed clutch member, a movable clutch member normally disengaged from the fixed clutch member, a clutch link movable to engage said clutch members, two fulcrum points carried by said clutch link and spaced upon opposite sides of a line joining the links pivots, a lever engaging said fulcrums between its ends, and governor-controlled means for moving said lever, thereby to cause engagement of said clutch members by movement in either direction of the governor-com trolled means. a
10. The combination With an indicating device and a governor controlling the actuation thereof, of normally inactive means for damping the movement of said governor and indicating device, said damping means being operatively connected to the governor to be actuated by sudden movements thereof.
Signed at Cosmopolis, Grays Harbor County, lVashington, this 28th day of October, 1921.
