INVENTO fir/Jur- Q78? er ay/ Q 4J Arranusr ARTHUR SALZER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 27, 1920.
Application filed May 20, 1918, Serial No. 235,560. Renewed October 24, '1919. serial' No. 333,109.
vented certain new and useful Improve-' ments in Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to unprovements in lamps, and particularly lamps intended for display or decorative purpose, as
distinguished from lamps exclusively for illumination. 4 It is an object of the invention to provide a lamp employing a bulb or globe, of relatively large proportions resembling in appearance an ordinary incandescent lamp of large candle power, in combination with-means for attaching the same to a lamp socket. I further propose to'provide in such bulb or globe a relatively small lighting element, that is .an incandescent lamp of much smaller candle power than would be suggested by the exterior appearance of the device. To this end, I provide in the present embodiment, a plug extension element adapted to support the lighting element at a distance from the light socket,' a
' globe attaching skirt. secured to the extenneck extending into the skirt, and attac ed near the plug, so that the exterior appearg sion element and'exposing the plug thereof, the skirt extending over and obscuring the extension element, and a globe havin a ance of the device is that of a lamp of large power.
- In order to add to the display value of the device, the extension element may p'refe'rably be of the flashing type, causing. the light to intermittently flash. Such a device is shown in U. S. patent to Miller, No. 884,518, dated April 14th, 1908.
A further object is to provide a globe having a large surface suitable for containing decorative designs, advertisements, etc. thus providing a very effective display, of simple and economical construction, and which may be readily attached to an ordinary lamp socket. \Vith the flashing extension element such display will be particularly attractive. I,
A further object is to provide such a device in which the various parts are independently and conveniently renewable, so that if one becomes out of order, it may be i replaced at a relatively small expense.
embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, and this embodiment will be hereinafter more fully described withreference thereto, and the invention will be finally pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings;
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of my inventlon;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof,
the plug extension and incandescent lamp being shown in elevation,
Fig. 3 is a view in elevation extension;
Fig. 4 is a skirt; and
of the plug vertical sectional view of the Fig. 5 is a view in elevation ofthe bulb or globe.
Simllar reference characters indicate corfigures of the drawings.
.Referring to the drawings, the embodiment' shown therein comprises a neck member 10 provided at one end with a screw socket 12-, at the other end with an external thread 15, and with a plug extension 11 of smaller diameter than the body of said member projecting from the externally threaded end thereof and having a screwthread adapted to engage an ordinary lamp socket. An incandescent bulb 14 is provided with the ordinary threaded lug 13, which ena es the socket 12 of t 1e neck member 10. skirt 18 is spaced from andsurrounds said neck member. This skirt has an inward top flange 17 and a dependent threaded rim 16 adapted to engage the externally threaded portion 15 of the neck member 10. This skirt is preferably provided near its lower edge with a head 24 and in its top with a curve 23 for ornamental purposes. The top flange is provided with air holes 25 for the purpose of ventilation.
A globe 19 incloses the incandescent lamp or bulb 1 1-and is provided with a neck 20 fitting within the skirt 18. This neck 20 is provided, preferably near its upper end, with an annular recess 21, and set screws 22 which pass through holes in the skirt opposite said recess are adjustable for engagement therewith for holding the globe. Any
ment, and it may, if desired, be provided with colored decorations, printed matter or other display features.
With my improvements a very effective display is provided, particularly when a flashing plug extension is employed. The globe may be readily removed without disengaging the lamp 14, and all of the parts are readily and independently renewable. The device will preferably be sold complete as shown in Fig. 1, and in this form may be immediately attached to an ordinary light socket. I
I have illustrated a preferred and 'satis factory embodiment of my invention, but it is obvious that changes may be made therein within the spirit and scope thereof,
as defined in the appended claim.
I claim An incandescent electric lamp compris portion of said neck member, a globe inclosing said bulb and provided with a neck adapted to fit said skirt, and fastening means connecting the neck of said globe with said skirt.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name.
ARTHUR SALZER.
