UNITED sTArps PATENT OFFICE.
ARNOLD W. HACKFIELD, 0F WELCOME, TEXAS.
COLLAPSIBLE TENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARNOLD WV. HACK- FIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Welcome, in the county of Austin and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Tents, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a collapsible tent and more particularly to a portable, knockdown structure that may be erected for supporting covering of water-proof fabric and which will occupy a minimum space when folded.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a supporting structure arranged upon four corner posts whereby a substantially rectangular shelter may be supported thus permitting plenty of room within the structure for the occupants to move about.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a collapsible tent which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the collapsible supporting frame, and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a detail view of a part of the in vention.
Referring to the drawing, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, and in which like numerals of reference indicate correspondin parts throughout the several views, the corner posts 1, 2, 3 and 1 may be constructed from hard wood or metal and their lower ends are pointed so that they may be quickly driven into the ground. Since the upper ends of the corner posts will be too high to strike with a driving hammer or sledge, each post is provided with a suitable lug 5 at a point in spaced relation to the pointed end of the post thereby providing a striking surface 6 through the me dium of which the posts may be driven into Specification of Letters Patent.

the ground. The upper end of each of the posts is provided with a flange 71in which a central opening is formed. These flanges receive the similarly shaped flanges 8 of the roof supporting rods 9 which extend inwardly and upwardly from the flanges and are fastened to a cap piece 10. The complementary flanges 7 and 8 receive fastening bolts 11 which may be quickly removed when the frame is being taken down.
Each flange 8 carries an integrally formed pair of ears 12 arranged in superposed relation to each other and pivotally receiving a brace rod 13. A centerpiece 1 1 is formed from a square plate which has its corners provided with projections 14: received in suitable turn buckles 15. These turn buckles also receive the corresponding ends of the brace rods 13. Fastened to the center of the plate 14: is a vertical supporting rod 16 which has its upper end received in the cap 10.
A suitable canvas covering 17 is designed to fit from the frame and this covering is provided with suitable openings for providing a door 18 and a window 19 each of which is closed by a suitable flap 20 and 21. When taking down the frame it is merely necessary to remove the canvas covering therefrom and disengage the turn buckles 15 from the ends of the brace rods 13. The bolts 11 may then be removed for disconnecting the corner posts from the rods 9 and these rods may then be disconnected from the cap piece 10. The various rods and corner posts may then be bundled together and tied in any suitable manner whereby they may occupy a minimum space and be easily transported from one place to another.
From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple and durable collapsible tent has been provided, the details of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to be understood however, that slight changes in the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
I claim:
1. A collapsible tent comprising a plurality of corner posts, a cap piece provided with a plurality of screw threaded openings, roof supporting rods received in the openings an having their outer ends connected to the ends of the said corner posts, the said cap piece carrying a supporting rod disposed centrally and depending from thecap piece,
a substantially square plate carried by the end of the said supporting rod and provided at each corner with a projection, a turn buckle carried by each projection, and brace rods received in the said turn buckles and connected to the upper ends of the said corner posts. 7
'2. A collapsible tent comprising a plurality of corner posts, angularly disposed supporting'rods attached at their outer ends to the upper ends of the said. corner posts, a
cap piece attached to the innerends of the. r said supporting rods and carrying a centrally disposed rod, brace rods disposed horizontally andattached to the said corner posts, each brace rod provided at its inner ends with a turn buckle, and means for attach- ARNOLD HACKFI'ELD.
