Description

T. LONG.
Glitter-Heads. No. 133;'463.
Patented Nov. 26, 1872.
IMPROVEMENT IN CUTTER-HEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Iatent No. 133,@63, dated November 26, 1872-.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS LONG, of Cerro Gordo, in the county of Piatt and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Cutter-Heads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a face view ot' the groove-cutter head. Fig. 2 is an edgeview of the same.
This invention has relation to devices for grooving flooring-boards; and it consists in the novel construction of a cutter-head designed to be applied to a planing-machine and adapted to produce the grooves of said licoring-boards, substantially as hereinafter more fully described.
Referring to the drawing, A designates the cutter-head for cutting the groove in flooringboards. These heads will iit any of the ordinary matching head spindles. The small screws et shown on the ends of the collars O represent devices for raising and lowering the heads on the spindle. Thescrews c are used for tightening the heads upon the spindles. The head A is of a circular form, and consists of two disks holding between them a saw, E, of any desirable form or size, the teeth projecting sufciently beyond the periphery of the head to cut the required depth of groove. Curved chisel-like cutters F are secured within sockets formed in the head A, and project therefrom on each side of the saw as far as may be required. These cutters shave oft'the edge of the board on each side of the groove while the latter is being cut, and thus insure a close, even joint where thel boards are matched. The cuttings taken oft' by the cutters pass out through channels e cut in the head, as shown. By the adjustment ofthe cutters the depth of the groove is regulated.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The cutter-head for grooving flooring, &c., consisting of the circular head A, circular saw E, curved chisel-like cutters F, and channels e, substantially as and for the purpose specitied.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS LONG.
