Be it known that I, CHARLES R. SEYMOUR, a CltlZGll'Of the United States, and resident State of New York, have invented certain new and useful. iin'n'o'n-zments in BoX-Covering hlachines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention machines which are adapted to apply a covering of paper to the tops and bottoms of paper or straw-board boxes or the like, and has particularreference to the mechanism for controlling the movement of the shearing knife.-
An object of the invention resides in the provision of mechanically-actuatedmeans for controlling the movement of the shearing knife which operates to sever the paper from the supply strip.
A. further object of the invent-ion resides in the provision of a mechanism which wiil automatically raise the knife to its initial or inoperative position and which will be reset for asubsequent operation.

This clutch comprises a socket member 1.9 and a cone member 20, the former of which is pro ided with a belt pulley 21 through which power is transmitted. The cone member20 ofthe clutch is provided with a. grooved collar 22, which is engaged by pins, on a shipper lever 24. This shipper lever is'pivoted at 25 to a projection :26 on the casing 10, and at its upper end is provided The cone member "20 is normally urged toward the socket member 19 by a coiled spring 28 whichrncirclcs the shaft 17 and expands between the. collar 22 and an adjacent portion of the casing 10. A latch 29, which is pivoted atBO to an arm '31 and is'provided is in engagement with the plate 84-, the cone member 20 of the clutch is held outof engagement with the socket member 19, and consequently the latter runs idle and the shaft 17 is not actuated. The arm 31 to which the latch 29 is pivoted, is integral with a sleeve 35 which oscillates about a shaft 9 and with which the lever 8, previously referred to, is integrally formed. Thus, the latch 29 and the lever 8 will move in unison as and for the purpose to be hereinafter described. e

In a covering machine of the class described, the combination With a stationary knife and a cooperating reciprocatingknife, of means for supporting the knife, and means for rendering the latter inoperative to support the knife, said supporting means being subsequently active to render the lastmentioned means inoperative.

In a covering machine of the class described, the combination With a stationary knife and a cooperating movable knife, of a rod depending from the latter, a lever to which said rod is connected, a cam for supporting the lever to maintain the knife in its raised position, but operative to permit the lever and knife to fall, means for rotating said cam including a shaft and a clutch therein, a shipper lever for actuating said clutch, a latch associated With the first mentioned lever to engage the shipper lever and retain the clutch member in its inoperative position, and means for renderingthe CHARLES R.
