UNITED STATES PATENT ormoE.
DOMENICO CALABCO, OF EURLINGTON, VERMONT.
Application filed October 25, 1918.
To-aZZ whom it mayconcern:
Be it known that I, Doarnmco CALARoo, citizen of Italy, residing at Burlington, in the county of Chittenden and State of Vermont, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Talking Machines and 'Writing-Desks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in cabinets, and-the principal object of the invention'is to provide means whereby the cabinetzwill serve the purposes of a-talking machine, a record case, a table and a writing desk.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the device with its contained parts may be folded up in the form of a suit case so that it may be transported from place to place. 7
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view of the device used as a talking machine.
Fig. 2 is a view of the device used as a desk.
Fig. 3 is a View showing the device in folded position.
Fig. 4 is a bottom view showing the arrangement of the legs.
Fig. 5 is a detail view.
In these views, 1 indicates a case and 2 the top thereof. This top is hinged to one side of the case and is provided with a lock 3 for locking the top in closed position. Pivoted links 4 connect the top to one end of the case so as to prevent the top from moving beyond a vertical position when opened. The sides and ends of the case extend below the bottom thereof so as to form a chamber 5 below said bottom. Legs 6 have their upper ends pivoted in said chamber and each pair of legs are connected together by the cross-bars 7. A pair of rods 8 is swiveled to each of the cross-bars 7, and the free ends of these rods are engaged by the clamping members 9, whereby the Specification of Letters Patent.
COMBINED TALKING-MACHINE AND WRITING-DESK.
Patented Feb. 10, 1920.
Serial No. 259,686.
11 is of considerably less width than theboard 10 and said boards are provided with a lapped joint where they come together. The boards are held in closed position by means of the eye-bolts 12 engaging the openings 13 in the board 11. As this board 11 overlaps the board 10, said board will hold board 10 closed. 7
The interior of the case is divided, by suitable partitions, into a talking machine case 1 1, a record receiving compartment 15 and a compartment 16 containing a drawer 17 for receiving writing material or the like. The talking machine case is provided with the doors 18, as usual, and the parts 19 of said talking machine are carried by the upper part of the case in a removable manner. The crank 20 for the motor passes through one end of the case 1 and is detachably arranged. In this way, when the talking machine is not in use, the parts thereof may be removed and placed within the case. The record compartment has grooved strips 21 therein to hold the records in spaced relation, and said records are held in place by a pivoted strip 22 engaging the upper part of the records. This strip may be raised out of contact with the records so as to permit removal of the records.
The means for converting the device into a writing desk consists of a leaf 23 made of such a size as to fit within the top 2. This leaf is hinged to the edges of the top by the pivoted links 24 so that the leaf may be swung down over the top of the case when the top 2 is open, with its rear edge resting on the top edge of the rear side of the case and its front part resting on the case 14 and the compartment 16. 1 sometimes find it desirable to place a strip 25 at the top edge of the front side of the case and to bevel the inner edge of this strip and to bevel the front edge of the leaf 23, as shown at 26. In this case, the bevel edges engaging with each other will support the leaf in writing position. The leaf may be held in this position by the buttons 27. I may place buttons on the exposed face of the leaf, when the same is located within the top 2, to hold large records on said leaf. The leaf and the doors and drawer are provided with suitable latch means for holding them in closed position. The case 1 is provided with a handle 28 so that the same may be easily carried.
It will thus be seen that the device can'be easily carried from one place to another and may be quickly set up so as to serve as a writing desk or a talking machine. By closing the top 2 the device may be used as a table.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim as my invention A portable cabinet comprising a rectangular casing open at its top and bottom and having a bottom wall arranged intermediate of the upper and lower edges of the casing to form therein an upper chamber, adapted to contain phonographic mechanism, and to also form a lower chamber, legs pivoted to the casing and arranged to fold within the lower chamber, a cross-rod connecting the legs at each end of the casing, rods pivoted to and extending longitudinally between said cross-rods and arranged in lapped relation, a clamping member engaging the lapped portions of said longitudinal rods, boards hinged to the casing to close the lower chamber when the legs are in folded position, one of said boards having means to overlap the other, means to detachably fasten the overlapping board in closed position to the casing, and a top hinged to the upper edge of the casing and arranged to close the upper chamber.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
