Description
J. M. BOUSQUET.
DOOR-CLOSER. APPLICATION man NOV-13,1917.
1,326,841. Patented Dec. 30,1919
JOSEPH M. BOUSQUET, on MIDnLnsnx, vnnivionr.
DOOR-CLOSER.
Application filed November 13, 1917. Serial No. 201,811.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'I, JOSEPH M. Bonsonn'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middlesex, in the county of Washington and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Closers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to means for closing doors, and particularly to a device specially adapted for installation in association with a door of a motor-vehicle.
It is an obj ect of the invention to provide a device of this kind that is simple iin'construction, direct in action, and easily adjusted to varying tension or pull on the door to be closed.
l/Vhen read in connection with the description herein, the details of construction and arrangement of parts contemplated by the invention will be apparent from the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof,
wherein embodiments of the invention are" disclosed, for purposes of illustration.
lVhile the disclosures herein now are considered to exemplify preferable embodiments of the invention, it is to be understood that it is not the intention to be limited necessarily thereto in interpretation of the claim, as it is obvious that changes within the limits of the claim can be made without departing from'the nature and spirit of the invention.
Like reference-characters refer to corresponding parts in the views of the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view through the door and a portion of the body of a motor-vehicle, the door being in closed position;
Fig. 2 is a similar view, the door being open;
Fig. 3 is an elevation of one side of the door-frame Fig. 4: is a view of means for adjustably connecting the strap to the body of the vehicle.
Having more particular reference to the drawing, 7 designates the side body and 8 the door of a motor-vehicle swingably mounted on the body by hinges 9 in the usual manner. The part of the body that forms the door-frame or its equivalent may be of hollow-casing form; or, if it is solid, it
ting. the edge of the door is an opening 11 near the side and an opening 12 located in an approximately central position between the sides of the body.
A plate or flange 13 is secured to the body, with a sleeve portion 14 projecting into the opening 12, there being an opening or passage 15 through the flange and sleeve leading to the interior of the body or to the recess '10. The opening 15 is arranged to receive a flexible member 16, such as a strap, which is formed with a series of holes 17, an one of which is arranged to receive a pin 18 passed throughthe sleeve portion 14.
The flexible member 16 extends into the interior of the door through a guide 19 set in its hinged edge that abuts the body, and its end in the body is formed witha loop 20 whichv connects it with a spring 21.
The spring may be ofcoil form, as shown by Figs; 1 and 2, in V which case its end opposite to the flexible member may be con- Specification of Letters Patent. te t e 30, 1919, I
has a recess 10 therein. In the wall abutwardly through the guide 19 against the tension of the spring, and the spring is of sufficient power to return the door to closed position When released, drawing the flexible member inwardly of the door during this movement.
In order to prevent injury to the portion a of the flexible member outside of the door' through the opening 11 and covers the flexible member, and it returns to housed position in the body as the door is closed.
I The tension of the spring may be altered by withdrawing the pin 18 and replacing it in another of the holes 17 of the flexible member. y
. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letfrom one end of said sprin and connected,
to said 1ne1nber,' a guide for said flexible connection at the hinge side of the door arranged to permit said connectionto move therethrough, and a fastening for the other end of said spring including a flange bearing against the face of the door edge opposite to the hinged side, a slotted sleeve ex tending therefrom into the door in which the end of the spring is disposed, and a pin passed through said sleeve and the spring end.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH M. BOUSQUET. Witnesses: TIMOTHY .GALLAHAN, WILLIAM N. THERIAULT.
