GARPENTERS KNIFE.

Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Dec. 2, 1919.
Application filed May 21, 1919. Serial No. 298,704.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Aims WEINBACHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oshkosh, county of lVinnebago, and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpenters Knives, of which the following is a specification. V
This invention relates to a combination cutting tool for use by carpenters, cabinet makers and woodworkers generally and it has for an object to provide a tool presenting a single cutting edge which can be used efficiently in a variety of ways and particularly as a chisel and a draw knife, not only when the latter are ordinarily used, but on, work when the use ofsuch instruments is desirable but the application of an ordinary tool thereto impossible.
The invention has for a further object. to provide a tool of this nature characterized by cheapness, ease of keeping in condition, and lightness in proportion to the work capable of being done.
For further comprehension of the inven-. tion, and of the objects and advantages be had to the following specification and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Figure 1 of the. drawings is a perspective view of a cutting tool constructed according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is a rear edge view thereof.
7 Fig. 3 is a'transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
My improved tool comprises a relatively long shank cross section and of oblong shape in cross section and inserted at one end in a handle 2 in the usual manner, both the handle and the manner of securing the tool therein being ordinary.
The outer end of the bar is provided with a triangular cutting head 3 in the form of a lateral ofiset, this triangular head taon both sides from the point of meeting with the bar as at 4 and 5 to form a straight cutting edge 6 alongthe third side, the side 4 being a continuation of the outer edge of the bar 1. i
This third side is approximately double the length of 5 and they form at their apex 7 a right angle, the cutting edge 6 extending in the median line of the shank bar and at an acute angle thereto.
bar 1 of comparatively small As a consequence of this construction the tool presents in a single cutting edge a relatively fine portion adjacent the extreme point 8 of the tool which renders it pecul iarly adapted for a drawing or pulling stroke to replace a drawknife and remove finely shaved portions of wood, while adjacent the point a stouter cutting portion is formed which readily performs. the work of a chisel, the combination being arranged to permit of use such as in corners or adjacent the meeting angles of a pair of vertically disposed surfaces, where an ordinary chisel or draw knife cannot be employed. For instance, the tool may be employed as a draw anife and moved along the work in the eneral direction of the arrow A as in Fig. 1 permitting it to work close in to a vertical surface without interference of said surface with the proper handling of the operator, or it may be used as a chisel and moved along the work in the general direction of the arrow B in Fig. 1 likewise permitting free manipulation close to a vertical surface.
The disposition of the cutting head also facilitates an oblique stroke along the work with a consequent increased ease of cutting permitting the'use of a relatively ight tool on comparatively heavy work.
The tool may also be used in cleaning out grooves or like work the pointed ends facilitating work of this'kind.
Having thus described my invention and set forth the manner of its use, what i claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is
A. combination cutting tool for woorl-- workers comprising a shank bar having triangular cutting head, one side of which is flush with one edge of the bar. said head having a second relatively short side extending at an angle to the bar, and a third relatively long side extending at a lesser angle to the bar than the said short side, said head tapering evenly in thickness from the point of'jnncture with the bar both longitudinally and transversely of the bar and forming a stralght-edged cutting element presentmg an increasingly heavy cutting portion rearwardly from the extreme point of the tool.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature. I
ALOIS wninnacnnn.
