EDWARD E. JENKINS. 0F LOUISVILLE, ILLINOIS.
AnJosrArLE BOOK AND Ania Basra.
Application filed Janua y as. 1919. Serial no. 272.673.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD E. JENKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Clay and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Book and Arm Rests, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in book and arm rests for use in connection with heavy leather books, to hold and support the same securely in different positions.
My invention consists of a simple and efficient device of this character having various details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which:
Figure l is a side elevation of the book rest.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the means for holding the book rest at different elevations,
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view showing the springs for raising the book rest, and
Fig. 5 is a detail view of a part of the invention.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter:
A designates the base of the book rest having flanges B rising therefrom, and which are provided with elongated slots 0. A rod D is pivoted in suitable bearings upon the base and has pivotal connections with the corresponding ends of the bars F. Other bars H are pivotally mounted upon the rod I passed through the center of the bars, and N is a rod carried by corresponding ends of the bars H, and the ends of said rod N project into said slot C in which they are adapted to have a sliding movement as the two sets of bars are folded or extended, for the purpose of raising or lowering the book rest. The top of the book rest is designated by letter O and has flanges 0 upon the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 14, 1919.
undensurface thereof which are slotted as at P- The corresponding ends of the bars F have a rod J, the ends of which extend into the slots P in which they have a sliding movement. A rod L is fastened to the under side of the top 0, and upon which rod L the adjacent ends of the bars H are pivoted. Collars T are mounted upon the rod I and fastened one to each of the adjacent faces of the bars H and F at their points of in tersection and the adjacent faces of the collar are provided with ratchet teeth which intermesh with one another, and so arranged that the teeth upon the collars will turn idly when the rack is extended, but when the latter comes to a rest in a horizontal position, the teeth will intermesh and hold the rack in its adjusted position.
Leaf springs S are fastened at their ends to the base and their free ends bear yieldingly against the under edges of the bars F adjacent to their stationary pivotal ends,
said springs being provided for the purpose of raising the rack to its adjusted position.
At one end of the book rest is an arm rest M of similar construction as the book rest and bars M .are pivotally mounted at corresponding ends upon the rod M which latter moves in a slot M in the flange M upon the base M while a rod Q fastened to the ends of the bars Q, is pivotally mounted upon one end of the base M A rod Q is fastened to the corresponding ends of the bars Q and engages slots Q in the flanges Q projecting from the under side of the rest M.
In the drawings I have illustrated a single book rest, but if desired, the same may be made double for holding either two books or each holding one side of a large book, and other variations may be made in the detailed construction of the apparatus without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In operation, when it is desired to hold a book at a certain height, the operator may raise the book rest, the latter being held at all times in horizontal planes, and by the provision of the intermeshing teeth of the collars, the rest may be held in such adjusted positions.
What I claim to be new is:
Abook rest, comprising intersecting bars bars are pivoted, rounds carried at the ends of said bars, a base and table pivotally connected to said rounds, the adjacent faces of said bars having bosses with serrations 5 adapted to interinesh, a cam nut mounted upon said shaft, the adjacent bar having a lateral projection with a cam edge adapted to cooperate with the cam edge of the nut -to flex the adjacent bar to throw the teeth 10 of the bosses into intermeshing relation with each other, springs fastened to the base and adapted to bear against the bars adjacent thereto near their lower pivotal ends.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence 01": two witnesses.
EDWARD E. JENKINS.
