UNITED sTATE's PATENT oEEIoE.
BENJAMIN R. JOLLY, OF RALEIGH,` NORTH CAROLINA.
WRIST-WATCH STRAP.
Application led November' 5, 1918.
To all 107mm it may concern lie-'it known that I, BENJAMIN R. JOLLY, a citizen of the United States7 and a resident of Raleigh, in the county of `Wake and State of North Caroliini, have invented a new and Improved lVrist-Watch Strap, of which the following is a full7 clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to straps for holding wrist watches on the wrist and has for an object the provision of an improved construction which will not only hold the watch properly in place, but which may be contracted and enlarged as desired while maintaining a ring structure so that it cannot be accidentally lost oli the arm.
Another object in view is to provide a strap for a watch which may be adjusted to produce a comparatively large loop capable of being passed over the hand when applying or removing by exercisingI a small elort, or il"I desired may be forced up the arm toward the elbow when washingjthe hands.
A further object is the provision of a strap in which a comparatively wide strap is provided to Contact with the wrist when lin use and a small. retaining strap for holding the watch in place together with fastening means whereby the retaining strap is guided and may be adjusted by 4the free end without looking at the strap.
In the acconipanyingdrawing:
Figure 1 is a sectional `view through a strap as the same appears when in use.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the strap shown in Fig. 1 with part extended so as to be forced over the hand when applying or rcmoving same'from the wrist or to be forced up toward the elbow.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the strap shown in Fig. l, same being spread out with the clamping strap broken away.
Fig. l :is a sectional view through Fig. 3 on line 1li- 4.
Fig. 5 is a bottoni plan view of part of the two straps shown in Fig. 3, same disclosing an adjusting arrangement for the clamping strap.
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5, but disclosing a modified form of adjusting member.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary sectional view through a modified form of guide wherein a separate eyelet is used for holding the guide in place. j
Referring to the accompanying drawing Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 9, 1919.
Serial No. 261,272.
by numerals 1 indicates aprotecting or supporting strap for a watch 2 which may be of any desired kind, said watch being provided with loops 3 and 4t in the usual manner for receiving a clamping strap 5. This clamping strap is threaded through slots 6, 7 and 8 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and is provided at oneend with a number of apertures 9 for receiving an adjusting member 10 and at the opposite end with a snap socket 11 for fitting the snap post 12, arranged on the strap 1 adjacent slot S. On the strap 1 there are also provided guides 13 and 14 preferably of metal7 formed with overlapping arms 15 and 16 and a base l? which is preferably formed with a pressed out portion 18 acting as an eyelet for holding these guides inplace. The member or eyelet 18 is, of course bent over and clenched in the usual manner for rigidly clamping the guides in'place. If desired spurs or other projections could be provided without departing from the spirit of the invention, as for instance a separate eyelet 19 could be used as shown in Fig. 7. It is also evident that if desired the guide 1-1 could be eliminated, though ordinarily it is desirable to have this guide at this end of the strap l in order to prevent any laccidental side movement of the clamping strap 5. i
From Fig. 5 it will be observed that the adjusting member 10- may be fitted into any of the apertures 9 for adj ustingthe effective length of strap 5 so that it may be moved from the position shown in Fig. 1 to the open position shown in Fig. 2 and if desired adjusted to give a greater or less opening as occasion may demand. The open position of the device, as shown in Fig. 2, is to permit the same to be passed over the hand after which the strap 5 and associate parts are moved to the position shown in Fig. l and the socket and post l1 and 12 are brought together and snapped in the usual manner. This movement may be accomplished without looking at the strap if desired. In addition to having an open position for the straps for passing` over the hand this open position is very desirable if the strap is used by soldiers as it will allow the strap to be forced up the arm toward the elbow when washing the hands and in this way prevent accidental loss of the watch and strap.
Vhen the parts are being assembled strap 5 is first threaded through guide 13 and then through guide 14 after which it is forced through the slot 6, 7 .and 8 in the order recited and iinally the adjustingmember 10 is applied at the desired point according to the size of opening desired. The adjusting member 10 is a T-shaped device having an enlarged end 20 which may be easily forced through any of the openings 9 by reason of the fact that the parts are flexible and consequently said openings will become elongated for preventing the passage of this member, but Will resist any return of this member suiciently to hold the adjusting member in place. If desired instead of having the adjusting member cut out of a solid piece of metal same may be bent from Wire as shown in Fig. 6 and formed With a head 20 similar to head 20.
What I claim is:
l. A Wrist Watch strap comprising a supA porting strap formed with tivo slots near one end and one slot adjacent the other end, a guide arranged at `each end of said strap, a clamping strap threaded through -both ol" said guides and through all of said slots, means engaging one end of said clamping strap for preventing the removal thereof through said guides, and adjustable fastening means arranged at the opposite end of said clamping strap for fastening said opposite end to said supporting strap.
Y 2. A Wrist Watch strap comprising a sup' porting` strap formed With a pair of spaced slots arranged substantially an equal distance from the center of' said strap, a third slot arranged adjacent one end of said strap, a guide arranged adjacent the end opposite said third slot, a post arranged adjacent one of the rst mentioned slots, a clamping strap extending .through said guide, said strap having a plurality of apertures in one end, a socket in the opposite end adapted to interlock with said post When the device is in use, said apertured end of said clamping strap being threaded through all of said slots7 and anadjustingmember positioned so as to extend through certain of lsaid apertures for locking the apertured end of said clamping strap in a predetermined position. 3. A Wrist Watch strap 'comprising `a supporting strap and a clamping strap for holdinoa Watch on the supporting strap and for clainpingthe supporting strap on the Wrist, and means i for clamping the supporting strap to the clamping strap in such a manner that `When the clamping strap is in one position the supporting strap is caused to hug snugly the wrist and when in a second position the supporting strap is distended whereby it may be passed over the hand, said supporting strap and said clamping strap when opened forming a substantially ring structure, said means including a guide at each end of the supporting strap through Which the clamping strap extends, and a snap fastener with one part lconnected to the supporting strap near the center thereof and the other part to the clamping strap near one end, said last mentioned part acting as a stop Jfor limiting the movement of the clamping strap through one of the guides.
'4. A Wrist Watch strap comprising a supporting strap formed with a guide, said guide having a pair of encircling overlapping arms, and a pressed out portion forming an eyelet whereby the guide is rigidly clamped to the supporting strap, and a clamping strap slidingly fitting in said guide for holdingl the Watch on said supporting strap and for holding the supporting strap on the Wrist When in use. i
5. A Wrist Watch strap comprising a supporting strap, a clamping strap for clampingl a Watch on the supporting strap and clamping the supporting strap on the Wrist when the device isin use, said clamping strap having a plurality of apertures on one end, a substantially T-shaped member having an enlarged head at the end of the trunk of the T, said T-shaped member extending through certain of said apertures for locking the clamping strap in any adjusted position. j
