Description
G. DIAMOND. PAPER BOX.
APPLICATION FILED FEB, 11. I919.
Patented mi. 9, 1919.
WITNESSES 1n: co'ntmnm vgmounnml ca WASHINGTON, n. c.
GEORGE DIAMOND, OF MILWAUKEE, 'VVISCONSIN.
PAPER 130x.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 9, 1919.
Application filed February 17, 1919. x Serial no. 277,532.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnoner. DIAMOND, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and Stateoi' lVisconsin, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in paper boxes, more particularly 01"- that ornamental type adapted to contain candies and the like and known to the candy trade as a shouldered box, wherein an inner box member is provided which seats within a pan shaped outer box member and projects a considerable distance above the walls of the outer box member, which thus form an intermediate shoulder on the walls of the completed box structure.
It is primarily the object of my invention to improve the construction of boxes of this character, particularly with respect to the ease with which said boxes may be assembled, and with respect to the provision of a desired neatness and strength of structure with a minimum amount of material and a minimum number of manufacturing steps.
Inasmuch as a considerable item of expense in connection with boxesof this character is the excess shipping charges of such boxes when shipped in finished form, due to their bulk, a further object of my invention resides in the provision of box structures of this nature which may be shipped in partially assembled condition to occupy a minimum amount of space, and which may be most readily set up by the purchaser, as
the necessity for their use arises.
lVith the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention resides more particularly in the novel combination, formation and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shouldered box constructed in accordance with my invention.
2 isa vertical sectional view through one end portion of the box on the plane indicated by the line 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the inner box member.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, 5 and 6 designate respectively the side and end. walls, and 7 designates the bottom of the outer portion of a shouldered box constructed in accordance with my invention, the, walls 5 being substantially half the height of the finished box structure. i "The inner member of my box is formed from a blank comprising a pair of side walls 8 and 9 connected by foldlines with an inblank of the upper edge of the end wall 10 is an inner wall section 13, and similarly extending from the end wall 11 is an inner end wall 14 from which extends an inner bottom section 15, separated from the section 14 by fold lines. Ornamental flaps 16 extend from the upper edges of the side walls 8 and 9, and have their free edge portions preferably scalloped as shown, or otherwise ornamented, it being noted that these flaps may be stamped to give a lace-like eifect.
The box structure is thus provided in two distinct parts, and in shipping a number of boxes, the inner sections are shipped fiat, while the outer sections are equal in bulk to but half the bulk of the completed boxes, whereby to effect a decided economy in ship ping, it being appreciated that if desired, the outer sections could also be shipped inflat form and set up in any suitable manner, not
pertinent to the present invention.
In assembling the box, the inner surfaces of the inner wall sections 13 and 14 and bottom section 15 are covered with paste. The connected walls are then opened out and the inner box member set in the outer memtermediate end wall 10, the side wall 9 havher, the inner bottom section 15 being pasted againstthe bottom 5 and the connecting wall sections 13 and 14 being pasted against the main end wall sections 10 and 11, the lower portions of the walls 8, 9, l0 and 11 being al-so'ipasted against the walls 5 and 6' of the outer box member. 7
it strong and attractive box structure is thus provided, which may be most readily assembled, particularly permitting assembly by the purchaser.
What is claimed is: V
-1'. A box of the class described comprising an outer box member having side and endwalls and an inner box member formed of a blank comprising side walls connected by fol-d lines with an intermediate end wall, and a second end Wall connected by fold lines with onset the side walls and secured to the other sidewall, said inner boxmeniber being set Within the outer boxmember, the walls of said" inner box member being of greater height than the Walls of the outerbox member whereby theupper edges of the walls of the outer ubox member form intermediate shoulders on the outer faces of the walls of the completed b'ox structure andaninner bottom sect on extending from and separated by fold lines from one of the walls of the inner box member.
2. A box of the class described comprising an outer box member having side and end Walls and an inner box member formed of 'a blank comprising side walls connected by fold lines with an intermediate end wall, and a second end wall connected by 'l'old lines with one of the side walls and secured to the other side wall, said inner box 1116]]!- ber being set within the outer box member, the wall of said inner box member being of greater height than the walls of the outer box member whereby the upper edges of the walls of the outer box member form intermediate shoulders on the outer faces of the walls of the completed box structure, inner end wall. sections connected by fold lines with and secured againstthe inner faces of the end walls or" the inner box member, and an inner bottom section extending from one of said inner end wall sections.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing l have hereunto set my hand at lVIilwankee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of \Visconsin.
