Description

N. P. SVENDSEN.
BABY CRIB.
APPLICATION FILED OCT-15.15MB.
1,3 1 1 ,782. Patented July 29, 1919.
THE COLUMBIA PLANUURIUH cu" WASHINGTON, n. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
NIELS PETER SVENDSEN, 0F CALGARY, ALBERTA, CANADA.
BABY-CRIB.
Application filed October 15, 1918.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, NIELS P. Svnnnsnn, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Calgary, in the Province of Alberta, Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Baby-Cribs, of which the following is a specification,
This invention has reference to a novel construction of crib for babies and the principal object of the invention is to produce a crib which may be folded up and pushed under a bed. c
Other objects of the invention relate to the manner of attaching the crib to the bed so that the same may have sliding movement on said bed; of means for connecting the sides of the crib thereto so that the same may be folded upon each other and of means of hinging the crib to the base so that said crib may be placed on a level with the bed or lowered so as to be passed under the bed.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, ref-.
erence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is the side view of the invention.
Fig. 2 is an end View with the parts in normal position.
Fig. 3 is a like view with the partsin lowered position.
Fig. 4 is a detailed view showing the means for connecting the upper edges of the crib together.
Fig. 5 is a detail showing the means for locking the crib in raised position.
In these views, 1 indicates the bottom frame of the crib, this frame consisting of the side and end pieces to which the bottom of woven wire or the like is secured. End posts 2 are secured to the corners of this frame and these posts support the sides 3 and the ends 4: of the crib. I prefer to make these sides and ends from a framework of tubing on which is stretched woven wire or the like. The two ends and one side are pivotally connected with the end posts by means of the bolts 5 which pass through the posts and engage the lower Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 258,130.
edges of the frames. In this way the ends and side maybe folded over upon each other as shown in Fig. 3. The other side is removably attached to its end posts by having its bottom edge engaging the slots 0 formed in the upper ends of the two posts. In this way this side may be lifted out of the slots and removed from the crib so as to leave one side of the crib open. The top edges of the sides and ends are secured together by having recessed lugs 7 connected with the upright tubes of the ends and the sides are provided with the projections 7", which engage the recesses in the lugs. These projections are screw threaded so as to receive the wing nuts 7. In this waythe upper parts of the ends and sides are secured together.
A base is provided forthe crib which consists of a frame 8 of substantially the same dimensions as the crib and this frame is supported by the pair of legs 9 at one side thereof. These logs are secured to the frame intermediate their ends and the frame is braced on said legs by the braces 10. The other side of the frame is supported by the strips 11. These strips are removably attached to said frame, by means of bolts or the like so that said strips may he used as legs or may form extensions of the end pieces of the frame, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. In this case the end of the strips are secured by bolts or the like to depending pieces 12 which are each provided with a plurality of holes 13 for receiving said bolts so that the point of attachment of the strips with the pieces 16 may be adjusted to suit the length of the legs 9. A V-shaped brace 13' connects said strip with the said piece to strengthen the same. The upper end of the piece 12 carries a roller 14 which engages a track 15 suspended from a bar 16. These bars are placed under the bed and are secured to the bed in any suitable way. As the bars are directly over the track they will prevent any part of the bed from interfering with the movement of the rollers.
The crib is connected with the base frame "by the hinges 17. As shown, there is a pair of the hinges on each side of the crib and they connect the side bars of the crib and base together. Each hinge consists of a pair of short leaves 18, which are riveted to said side bars, and the long leaf 19 extending between the bars. when the parts are in raised position the Patented July 29, 1919.
It will thus be seen that 'rods are retracted from said holes by means of the button 22"connected with the inner ends ofsaid rods and carried by a bracket 23' secured'to the side-rail ofthe crib.
-It-Wil1'-thus-be seen that the crib is held in upright position alongside the bed and When desired free-access may be'hadto the crib from the bed by removing the inner sideof the crib. This side may be placed underthe-base on the hooks 23 which are provided forthis purpose. When the crib is not in use the sides and ends are swung downwardly and then the rods withdrawi'i from the holes by means of thebutton 22.
The crib is then folded into the position shown in Fig.- 3 and thenthe-baseWiththe 'cri'bthereon'is shoved under-the bed. When the crib is to be used alone the strips 1-l' are placedvertically-so as toforin legstherefor.
1 prefer to cover "the edges of the side and end frames'of the crib by folding sheet metal strips about the tubes and edges of the woven Wire. 1 v
It is thought from the foregoing descrlp- 'tion that the advantages and novel features of my invention Will be readily apparent.
I desire it to he understood that :I may make changes in the construction and in the combinationand arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall Within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim as my invention A crib of the class described comprising'a connected WlthGZI'Gh-GIICl ofthe frame at one side thereof and having a portion-projecting above the frame, apairo-fstrips detachably connected With the other siol'e of the frame frame consisting ofa-pair of side rails and, end rails connected With-the s1de-ra1ls,-a leg and when placed vertically formingdegs and When placed horizontally forming'ex tensions of the end rails, depending pieces adjustaibly and detaehably connected With the ends of the stripsvvhenthe same are in their horizontal position, means forvslidingly connecting said depending pieces to the bottom'of a bedand a crib hinged to said frame.
In-testimony whereof I =aflix-my signature.
