UNITED STATES PATENT oruucn.
WILLIAM Gr. NEWTON, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR. TO THE PECK BROS. & 00., OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION.
BASIN WASTE-FIXTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 29, 1919.
To all whom it may concern .1
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. NEWTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Basin aste-Fixtures; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent in Figure 1 a sectional view of a basin waste fixture constructed in accordance with my invention, and shown in connection with a portion of the basin and the operating spindle broken away. i
Fig. 2 a side view of the plug carrier detached. V
Fig. 3 an end view of the bottom of the said carrier.
This invention relates to an improvement in basin waste fixtures and particularly to fixtures in which a. plug or stopper for the waste pipe is raised and lowered by the up and down movement of a waste-operating spindle, such aconstruction including a substantially horizontally arranged shaft by which movement of the spindle is imparted to the plug. While it is desirable that the plugs should be removable, if they are made easily removable they are frequently maliciously removed and carried away. The object of this invention is to so construct the "carrier for the plug that while it may be removed if operated in the proper way, is not readily removed unless one is familiar with the construction; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter de scribed and particularly recited in the claim.
In carrying out my invention I employ a waste pipe fitting 6 of substantially usual construction and adapted to be mounted in a basin or tub 7 in the usual way, this cas- 7 ing including a nipple 8 at one side throu h which the operating shaft 9 extends. s herein shown this shaft is formed with a fixed spherical bearing 10 adapted to be seated against a packing 11 seated in the outer end of the nipple 8. Loosely mounted I outer end of the shaft is connected in the usual way to a vertically movable spindle 15 the upward and downward movement of which rocks the shaft so as to raise or lower its inner end to raise or lower the plug.
vMounted in the casing is a crossed plate plug carrier 16 adapted at its outer end to receive a plug 17 which is adjustably connected with the carrier in the usual way and adapted to fit the upper end of the casing. At the lower end the carrier is formed with a centrally arranged downwardly projecting book 18 the nose 19 of which is offset from the plane of the carrier so that if the carrier is turned when it is inserted into the casing the hook will clear the inner end of the shaft, and then if the carrier is turned the hook will engage with the shaft, and when so engaged the carrier and the plug cannot be removed from the casing. Should occasion require it is only necessary to turn the plug carrier so as to turn the hook out of engagement with the inner end of the shaft to permit its removal.
I claim A basin waste fixture comprising a casing, a crossed plate plug carrier mounted therein, a plug at the upper end of the said carrier, said carrier provided at its lower end with a hook having its nose offset from the plane of the carrier and an operating shaft with which said centrally arranged downwardly projecting hook may engage,
WILLIAM G. NEWTON.
