Description

J. P. TUCKER.
GARMENT FASTENER.
APPLICATION FILED DEC- 1a. 1918.

INVENTOR.
BY MFM ATTORNEY.
THB COLUMBIA PLANOGRAP" CO" wasumu'nn. I7. 6.
U ITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JosEPH P. TUCKER, or SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
GARMENT-FASTENER.
To all whom 2'25 may concern Beit known that I, JOSEPH P. TUCKER, citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county .of King, and. State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in garment fasteners. I
An important object of the invention is to provide a garment fastener having no spring element or elements, and which is substantially flat when the members thereof are assembled.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and highly convenient in use.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the members of the device, showing the same separated,
Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal sectionthrough the device with the members assembled, and,
Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the members angularly arranged.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodii so ment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates one member of the garment fastener, and 2 designates the coactingmember.
The member 1 is formed of a piece of wire or the like, which is bent to provide a transverse head 3, having end portions 4:, which lie flat or parallel therewith. The end portions 4 are bent into curved or looped portions 5, providing an eye 6, arranged rearwardly of the transverse head 3, and equidstantly spaced from the ends thereof.
The wire extends rearwardly beyond the looped portions 5, in the form of parallel contacting arms -7, forming a shank, disposed at a right angle to the transverse head 3. At their ends, the arms 7 are provided with eyes 8 for attachment to the garment, by sewing or the like.
The coacting member 2 is also formed of Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed December 18, 1918. Serial No. 267,238.
a section of wire or the like, providing a transverse portion or bar 9, which is bent downwardly upon itself at a point equidistantly spaced from the ends thereof for pro viding a hook or holding projection 10, to enter the eye 6. At its ends, the transverse portion is bent to form substantially vertical loops 11, for the reception of the transverse head 3. The wire is continued beyond the loops 11, in the form of horizontal arms 12, having eyes 13, for attachment to the garment, by means of sewing or the like. At or near the ends of the transverse portion or bar 9 and inwardly of the vertical loops 11, such portion is bent to form approximately horizontal pivot cranks or lateral extensions 14, which are preferably slightly inclined downwardly.
In the operation of the device, the member 2 is preferably held in the angular position, as indicated in Fig. 3, and the transverse head 3 inserted through the vertical loops 11, the pivot cranks 14 contacting with the transverse head 3. The holding member or hook 10 is now positioned near and above the eye 6. When the member 2 is swung upwardly to the horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 2, the cranks 14 turning upon the transverse head 3, the holding member or hook 10 will enter the eye 6, and the two members 1 and 2 will be securely locked.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes may be resorted to in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts, without departing from the spirit of my invention, or the scope of the sub joined claims.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. A garment fastener of the character described, comprising a member including a transverse head and a longitudinal shank said shank having an eye formed therein near its forward end; and a coacting member comprising a transverse portion provided with a depending holding element to enter the eye, said transverse portion being provided at its ends with substantially vertical loops and inwardly of and near the loops with approximately horizontal pivot cranks; and means to secure the members to the parts of a garment.
2. A garment fastener of the character described, comprising a member formed of a Patented July 1, 1919.
section of Wire which is bent upon itself to ber formedof a section oifiwire providing a transverse portion Wh1ch 1s bent downwardly'upon itself to provide a central de- {pending holding member, the transverse portion being bent at its ends to provide substantially verticaliloops, said transverse portion being further bent to provide approximately horizontal pivot cranks, the material of the transverse member extending beyond the substantially vertical loops to form arms having their ends bent to provide eyes.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
