Description

' WILLIAM F. TRIPLETT, or GRAND JUNCTION, COLORADO.
BOILER-TUBE CONNECTION.
Specification of Letters iatent.
Patented May 20, 1919.
Application filed September 6, 1918. Serial No. 252,891.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM F. TRIP- LETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand. Junction, in the county of have invented Mesa and State of Colorado,
new and useful Improvements in Boiler- Tube Connections, of
is a specification.
This invention relates to boiler construction, particularly to means for securing the boiler tube to the flue sheet, and has for its which the following object the provision of a novel connection between the boiler tube and the flue sheet whereby an extremely tight joint will be pro vided so that leakage will be prevented, the construction being such that the end of the tube will be effectively braced so that an extremely strong structure will be produfied ing out of the copper gasket will be prevented.
More specifically the object of the invention resides in the provision of inwardly extendin flanges formed on the flue sheet around t e tube openings, the tubes extending entirely through the openings and being provided upon their outer ends with thimbles threaded thereon and bearing against copper gaskets, the thimbles bein provided with reinforcing flanges seated within countersinks at the outer ends of the tube receiving openings whereby the outer face of the flue sheet will be flush.
A further object is the provision of a connection of this character which will be extremely economical in the use of material, simple and inexpensive in construction, efficient in use, durable in service and a general improvement in the art.
"With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 1s a sectional view through a portion of a flue sheet and tube showing my novel connection.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the thimble detached and v Fig. 3 is a plan view of a tube and flue sheet.
Referring more particularly to the drawing the numeral 5 designates a portion of the flue sheet of a boiler having a circular open- -be prevented from buckling.
ing surrounded by an inwardly extending flange 6. The inner portion of the opening is cylindrical as shown at 7 the intermediate ,the frusto-conical portion 8 of the opening. The thimble 13 is provided with an annular flange 15 seating within the countersink 9 for forming a flush .joint. The outer face of the flange 15 is provided with a plurality of slots 16 for engagement of a spanner wrench whereby the thimble may be threaded into position firmly engaging the gasket 12.
The purpose-of the flanged flue shet'is primarily to provide for a tight flue or tube joint. It also acts as abrace or stay for long boiler tubes or flues, thereby eliminating the vibration on the direct end of the tube. It also does away with the idea of brick arches, a construction which is used to protect flues where they copper. With the use of the above described joint, necessity for rolling of calking thetubes or flues will be eliminated. The pur pose of cou'ntersinking the flue sheet as shown at 9, is to permit the flange of the thimble to lie flush with the flue sheet. This construction also reinforces the flue sheet and helps to prevent the same from honey-combing. In this form of construction'it will also be possible to use a much harder metal in the'making of the tube for the reason that the end of the tube extends entirely through the flue sheet. The provision of the inwardly extending flange 6 are beaded in with around the tube receivlng opening provides a reinforcement whereby the flue sheet will Furthermore, in view of the fact that water within the boiler may circulate around the flange 6 the danger of burning out of the copper gasket 12 will be minimized and the water pressure around the tube will be equalized instead of having a direct pressure against the end of the tube as in ordinary construction.
'VVhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it Will of coursebe readily understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention nor the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
A boiler tube connection comprising in combination a flue sheet provided With an opening surrounded by an inwardly extending integral flange, the inner portion of said opening being cylindrical and threaded, the intermediate portion of said opening being frusto-conical and of greater diameter than said cylindrical portion, the outer portion of said opening being countersunk, a boiler tube having its end threaded through said cylindrical portion and having its extremity extending to the outer surface of said flue sheet, a gasket of relatively soft material surrounding the threaded end of said tube and disposed Within the smaller end of said frusto-conic'al portion of the opening, an internally, threaded thimble engaged upon the threaded end of thetube and having a frusto-conical outer' periphery conformingly engaging within said frusto-conicalportion of the opening, and an outwardly extending annular flange on said thimble seating within the countersunk portion of said opening. 7
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
' WILLIAM F; TRIPLETT.
