To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l[, ERNEST MERRICK, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, county of Union, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molds or Forms for Concrete Structures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to molds or forms designed for use in making walls or similar structures from cement, concrete or similar plastic material, and particularly to molds or forms made up of a plurality of separate and independent sections similar to one another, and which sections are designed to be assembled and locked together, to thereby provide a form or mold of suficient area and size for the formation of the wall to be produced.
@ne of the objects of my invention is to provide for thebuilding up of a mold or form for a Wall from a plurality of individual sections, each of which comprises disposed side members spaced apart from one another and connected together in such a way as to provide a unitary rigid structure.
Another object is to provide a means for adjusting the sides at a distance from each other, and for always holding the sides of the mold in position when adjusted.
Another object is to so construct the sections that they may be assembled and secured together to thereby produce a mold of sufficient size for the wall to be produced, and which wall mold or form, because of the rigidity of the individual sections which enter into its composition, will. be stable and rigid, and will require no additional or auxlllary means of support in the case of walls of ordinary size and area.

With the above and other objects in View, my invention consists in the improved Wall mold or form illustrated in the accompanying drawing and hereinafter described and claimed, and in such variations and modifications thereof as will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which my invention relates.
Referring to the drawing accompanying and forming a part of this specification, and wherein the preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated Figure 1 is a View showing a section comprising a pair of side members, together with the connecting members whereby they are held in proper relation with one another in plan, portions of said members being broken away, however, to better show cer tain features of the device; and,
Fig. 2 is a view showinga plurality of sections in side elevation, and assembled and connected with one another to provide a mold or form for a wall.
In the drawing, the reference numerals- 5, 5 designate two side members spaced apart from one another whereby a space is provided between them designed and adapt ed to receive a plastic material which, upon hardening, forms a wall or a part thereof or some other article or device, according to the side, form, outline, or other features of the side members, as will be appreciated. These side members are shown as flat, or as having plane surfaces, for the reason that the embodiment of my invention illustrated is designed for use in producing plane flat walls of uniform thickness, and devoid of surface treatment or ornamentation with the exception that the joints between the molds may be shown to indicate blocks of concrete in the finished wall. The side members may be made of any suitable material, those illustrated being made from board or plank about two inches in thickness; and they may obviously vary in size or area, suitable dimensions for said side members being four feet in len'gthby one foot in width or height.
The side members 5, 5 are held a proper distance apart from one another, and in fixed relation with one another, by means of connecting members 6 in the form of rods threaded throughout their entire length and extending across the space between the side members, and the two ends of which are in threaded engagement with threaded holes or openings provided in said members, or in metallic bosses 7 secured to and carried by said side members when they are made of wood, as in the present case. These connecting members being in threaded engagement at their ends with two bosses carried by and secured one to each of the side members 5, 5 act to hold the said members in fixed positions relative to one another, and to prevent said inembeis from moving either toward .or away from one another, and the threaded openings in the bosses are made of considerable length, and the connecting members of substantial diameter (those shown being about one inch in diameter) in order that the two side members when connected with one another through and by means of the connecting members will form a device or structure which will be comparatively rigid, and which may be handled as a unitary structure, and one in which lost motion or movement of the parts relative to one another will be reduced to a minimum. Although the side members are shown as connected together by means of two threaded members 6, it will be appreciated that the number of such connectors used will depend largely upon the area of the side members.
The connecting members 6 are shown as surrounded and protected by sleeves 8 of paper, p'asteboard, or other substance in order to permit the easy removal of the connecting member after a plastic material has been poured about them and has hardened or, as alternative schemes, the said connecting members may be coated with wax or like substance, or wrapped with a protecting covering, after the side members have been assembled. These sleeves or coverings, however, are not designed to and do not act as spacers to keep the side members a proper distance apart, that function being performed by the connecting members 6, because of the threaded connection between their ends and the bosses 7 carried by the.
bling pairs of said members or use in forming a mold or form for a wall, and for unscrewing the said connecting members from the bosses and removing them from the finished wall, to thereby permit the removal of the side members from the wall.
Fig. 2 shows how a plurality of pairs of side members spaced apart from and rigidly connected with one another, as hereinbefore explained, may be assembled end to end and one on top of another, to thereby form a mold or form of the pro-per size for the wall to be produced by pouring concrete or similar plastic material into the space between the sides thereof, as will be appreciated;
In building up or assembling a form or mold for a wall the. individual units or sections made up of pairs of side members will be arranged to break joints, as shown, in order that the wall produced may present the appearance of stone-work laid in regular courses, and means are provided for interlocking and holding the meeting upper and lower edges of the several sections in proper fixed relation with one another to thereby provide a wall form or mold which will be rigid and stable, and which will ordinarily require-no auxiliary bracing or support, because of the rigid character of the individual sections which enter into its composition. This end is accomplished in the embodiment of my invention illustrated by providing dowel pins 10 projecting from the edges of and located adjacent the ends of the side members, and holes 11 in the edges of the is said side members; the pins of one side HIGH!" ber entering holes in the edges of two other side members against which it abuts, when airs of side members are assembled, as shown in Fig.2. whereby abutting side membeis are kept in proper relation to one another and a wall having a smooth and finished surface is secured. lln the form of my invention shown the dowel pins 10 are formed by t-he'ends of rods 12 which extend through transverse.

Having thus described and explained my invention, I'claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a device for use in forming a wall from plastic material, two side members spaced apart from one another and having each a threaded opening, and :1 connecting member extending across the space between said memhcrs and threaded throughout its entire length, and'the ends of which are in threaded engagement with said threaded openings.
2. In a device for use in forming a wall from plastic material, two side members spaced apart from one another, two bosses carried one by each of said side members and having each a threaded opening, and a connecting member extending between said side members and threaded throughout its entire length, and the ends of which are in threaded engagement with the openings in said bosses.
3. In a device for use in forming a wall from plastic material, two parallel side members spaced apart from one another, two bosses carried one by each of said side members and having each a threaded opening and the axes of which openings extend I at right angles to the saidside members, and a connecting member extending between the'said side members and threaded throughout its entire length, and the ends of which are in threaded, engagement with the openings in said bosses.
4. In a device for use in forming a Wall from plastic material, two parallel fiat side members spaced apart from one another, two connecting members spaced apart from one another and extending across the space between said side members and at right angles to the planes thereof, and which connecting members arevthreaded throughout their entire length, and threaded bosses carried by said side members and with which the ends of said connecting members are in threaded engagement. 4

In a device for forming a wall from plastic material, two side members spaced apart from one another, and unitary transversely extending connecting and spacing members bodily removable from but the ends of which are rigidly and removably connected with said side members whereby a rigid knock-down structure or section is secured. a
6. A mold for use in forming a wall from plastic material, the same comprisinga plurality of sections arranged end to end and one upon another, and each of which sections is made up of two side members spaced apart from and rigidly connected with one another by transversely extending connecting members, the ends of which are connected with said side members, and dowel pins located at and projecting from the edges of said side members and adapted to enter holes provided in the abutting edges of other side members.
7. A mold for use in forming a wall from plastic material, the same comprising a plurality of sections arranged end to end and one upon another, and each of which sections is made up of two side members rigidly connected with and spaced apart from one another by transversely extending connecting members, the ends of which are connected with said-side members, and means whereby the abutting edges of the side members of said several sections are interlocked with one another.
8. A mold for use in forming a wall from plastic material the same comprising a plurality of sections arranged end to end and one upon another, and each of which sections is made up of two parallel side members rigidly connected with and spaced apart from one another by transversely extending connecting members, the ends of which are connected with said side members.
