ADJUSTABLE FOLDING CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented A111. 29, 1919..
Application filed September 28, 1917. Serial No. 193,736.
adjustable folding chairs.
An important object of this invention is to provide an adjustable folding chair capable of being used as a reclining chair, steamer chair, ordinary high chair, or a swinging settee.
A further object of the invention is to provide an adjustable folding chair so construoted as to permit the feet and back thereof to be adjusted invarious positions in relation to each other for providing a chair adapted for various uses.
A further object of the invention is to provide a chair adapted to be suspended from a suitable support for use as a swinging settee or the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide an adjustable folding chair which is simple, practical, and comparatively inexpensive in construction.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully set forth in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the chair adjusted for use as an easy chair,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation illustratingthe chair adjusted for use as an ordinary straight back chair,
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the chair suspended from cables,
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the chair suspended from cables, and in an inclined position, I
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view illustrating the manner in which the chair is adjusted,
Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view illustrating the chair collapsed,
Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the chair adjusted for use as a reclining chair or couch,
Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the chair adjusted for use as a steamer chair,
Fig. 9 is a sectional view through a portion of the chair illustrating the manner in which the rear legs engage the seat when the chair is extended in a reclining or steamer chair position, and
Fig. 10 is a sectional view through a portion of the chair illustrating the manner in which the rear legs are cut to permit them to conform to the seat frame.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, the'numeral 5 designates a rectangular seat frame, to the upper end of which is secured the usual seat 6. The frame is provided on its upper side at the opposite corners thereof with eyes 7, the purpose of which will be fully hereinafter described.
Front legs 8 are pivotally secured intermediate their ends to the side rails of the 1 seat frame 5 by bolts 9, having wing nuts 10 arranged thereon for facilitating the moving of the legs to various positions with relation to the seat frame 5.
A back 11 is hingedly secured, as at 12,
nuts 16 arranged thereon for facilitating the adjustment of the back and arms to various positions with relation to eachother. The forward ends of the arms 13 are adjustably secured by bolts 16 to the upper ends of the forward legs 8 and the bolts 16 have wing nuts 17 arranged thereon to facilitate the adjustment of the arms 13 to permit them to be moved in various positions with relation to the back, seat frame and forward legs. A leg rest 18 is hingedly secured, at 19, to the underside of the front rail of the seat frame 5 and is adapted to be held in an extended position by legs 20 which are pivotally secured to the front rail of the leg rest 18 by bolts 21, having wing nuts 22 arranged thereon for adjusting the legs 20 at various positions with respect to the leg rest 18. The hinges 19 facilitate the moving of the leg rest 18 in various positions with respect to the seat frame 5.
The arms 13 are provided with transverse slots 23 adapted to receive a suitable retaining strap when the chair is to be used as a hi h chair for babies.
T e rear rail of the seat frame 5 has secured to its under side, a pivoted latch 25 adapted to be swung on its pivot 26 and engage the front rail of the leg rest 18 when the chair is collapsed as shown in Fig. 6.
When it is desired to use the device as an ordinary chair, the frame 5 is arranged in a horizontal plane and the back 11 disposed at right angles thereto. The forward legs 8 are in a vertical plane and the nuts 10, 16' and 17 are tightened and hold the legs, seat, arms and back in a rigid position with respect 'to each other. Rear legs 26 are conthe eyes 30. The medial portions of the cables pass through hooks or eyes 33 embedded in the ceiling or other support so as to permit the device to be used as a swinging settee.
When the chair is not in use, the legs are swung inwardly against the under side of the leg supporting rest 18. The leg supporting rest 18 is then swung rearwardly on its hinges 19 against the under side of the frame 6 and between the under side rails of the seat frame 5. The catch 25 is then moved into engagement with the leg rest 18 and holds the same against displacement from the under side of the seat 6. Upon the loosening of the nuts 29, the rear legs 26 are moved forwardly between the side rails of the seat frame 5, as illustrated in Fig. 6. The nuts 10, 22 and 16 are then loosened and the back 13 moved forwardly forcing the arms 13 forwardly, thus moving the upper ends of the front legs 8 forwardly and their lower ends rearwardly as shown. in Fig. 6.
'When it is desired to use the chair as a settee, the cables are extended through the hooks 33 and the forward legs arranged at right angles to the seat frame 5. As shown in Fig. 3, the forward legs will engage the floor and hold the settee relatively stationary. When it is desired to swing, it is only necessary to loosen the nuts 10, 15, and 17 move the back rearwardly, swing the arms rearwardly and swing the lower ends of the legs 8 forwardly to an inclined or angular position with respect to the seat frame 5.
Fig. 7 illustrates the chair positioned for use as a reclining lounge or camp cot. In this position the leg supporting rest is flush with the seat. The angular disposition of the legs 8, 20, and 26, retain the chair in a rigid position.
The upper side of the legs 26 are cut aWay as at 34:, so as to receive the rear rails of the seat frame 5 when the legs are moved rearwardly in the position illustrated in Fig. 8, wherein the chair is shown adjusted for use as a steamer chair. Q
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A chair of the character described, comprising a seat; a horizontally hinged back carried by the seat; a horizontally hinged foot rest carried by the seat; supportlng legs pivotally secured to the foot rest; forward supporting legs pivotally secured intermediate their ends to said seat; arm rest-s pivotally secured at their end portions to said forward legs and back; rear legs pivotally secured to said seat at points spaced inwardly from its rear end; and means to retain the chair in an adjusted position, said chair being collapsible and adapted for ad j ustment to various positions.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS J. RIEMENSCHNEIDER.
