STOCK-OUDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 15, 1919.
application mea August 5, 191s. Serial No. 248,382.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, GLEN RANDALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mitchell in the county of Scotts Bluil'I and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stock- Oilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stock oilers and more particularly to an improved device for containing a supply of lubricant to be automatically distributed as contact of the animal and device is made.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an improved stock oiler which will require a minimum space and which will supply lubricant or grease to the sides and back of the animal.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section showing the device constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary section of a portion of the device.
Fig. 4. is a section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the upright parallel columns 1 and 2 are of hollow construction being preferabl formed from suitable lengths of pipe. A ase member 3 is provided for each column and includes a base fiange 4 adapted to be bolted to the ground or Hoor. A screw threaded extension 5 carried by the base is adapted to receive the lower interiorly screw threaded end of each column and the u per end of each column is normally closed y a removable cap 6.
Approximately intermediate the ends thereof, each pipe is provided with a right angularly extending projection 7. A cross pipe 8 has its ends connected to the members 7 and thereby forms brace bar for the columns 1 and 2 and also a means for oiling the back of the animals as will presently appear.
The columns 1 and the pipe 8 are provided with a plurality of relatively small openings or outlet ports 9 one of which is shown to advantage in Fig. 4 of the drawing. The openings are slightly ta ered as shown and cach receives a tapere valve member 10. The valve members are substantially conical in formation and have their outer ends eX- tended beyond the outer surface of the pipe and rounded as shown. The inner end of each valve member carries a stud 11 which is connected to a flat spring 12 at one end of the latter, the opposite end of the spring being riveted or otherwise fastened to the pipe as indicated at 13. The valve members are thereby resiliently held in position for closing the ports 9 but it will be obvious that when the animals rub against the columns the valves will be forced inwardly and a quantity of grease or oil contained within the hollow columns will be permitted to pass out through the ports and thereby spread upon the animals hide. The cross pipe 8 being horizontally disposed will act in the same manner when the animal passes beneath the pipe since its back will contact with the pipe and force the lowermost valve into open position as set forth.
The device is especially desirable for large cattle for the reason that it is eifectively braced by the cross pipe 8 and will withstand the weight of the animal when the latter rubs against the pipe or columns.
The foregoing description and accompanyin drawings have reference to what might e considered to be the preferred or approved form of my invention. I desire it to be understood that I ma make such changes in construction, com ination and arrangement of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A stock oiler comprising a pair of parallel columns of hollow construction, a brace pi e disposed horizontally and having its en s connected to the said columns approximately In testimon whereof I afix my signature in presence 0 two Witnesses.
GLEN RANDALL.
intermediate the ends thereof, the said columns and said pipe having a plurality of openings formed therein, and ,inwerdl mow able valve means mounted in the sai' openings und resilently held to extend beyond the said pipe and columns when in operative position.
