To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MICHAEL TANENBAUM,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful improvements in Drills, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to drills and is an improvement on the invention shown in the patents to Benjamin Kunitz '#1,140,988 and 1,287,064
T he principal object of the present inven-' tion is to provide a new and simplified bowl structure for a drill of this nature Another object is to simplify and improve the variouselements of thedrill structure per so. i
Another object is to produce a device of this nature which shall be simple and cheap of construction, and highly efficient for the purpose for which it is designed.
"With these and other objects in view the invention resides in certain novel construction and combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved drill. i

Referring to the drawing in detail, 10 represents a length of tubing which is swaged down at 11 into a suitable form for being held in an ordinarybrace. Upon the end of this member is threadedly secured a head 12 having radiating arms 13 each of which is provided with a radial slot 14 in its of the larger knives.

of the members 13 transversely of the slots 14 and set screws 15 pass through these aper tures which are threaded at one end so as to hold the screws when seated therein. Two knives 16 for removing the major portion of the plaster or other material are provided for each device and each of these knives comprises a shank 17 which slides in one of the ways 14. The shank 17' is formed with a slot 18 through which the screw 15 passes. It is obvious that these knives are therefore adjustable radially of the device. Only one knife is adjusted, the other being left in inner position to remove the inner material from the hole, although both are adjustable and either may be adjusted when desired.
J-i. center point member 31 is provided with a shoulder 32 adapted to seat itself in the end of the sleeve 25 and against the inner shoulder formed at 26. A tool of this nature is intended for use where electric installation is to be made in houses not so equipped during the building and in boring suitable holes in the ceiling or walls of any room in which to place the required outlet box, considerable annoyance and damage has been caused by the falling plaster where these drills are not used. In the former patents on a device of this nature which patents have been hereinbefore re ferred to the bowl structure for catching the debris has not been of the most advantageous type and the present bowl structure is designed so that it may be quickly adjusted along the tubing 10 to any desired position,
and this is of great advantage inasmuch as the bowl may be kept very closeto the ceiling during the entire operation and shifted down a littlebit. at a time without requiring any loss of time in adjusting set screws and so forth.
The present bowl structure comprises a cupped member 35 which is apertured and drawn out at 36, the portion 36 being soldered or otherwise secured to a length of tubing 37 of a size to fit snugly and yet slip freely along the tubing 10. iaecured to the lower end of the tube S'Tis a knurled member 38 carrying a spring 89 which projects a slight distance into the central aperture so as to frictionally engage the tubing 10. With this structure it will be readily seen that the bowl may be quickly and easily positioned along the tube 10 and at the same time will be held securely in any adjusted position by the spring 39.
In using the device it is often found that a gas pipe is in the center of the hole to be bored, and in this case the center point member 31 is removed and the pipe allowed to protrude into the sleeve 25, the sleeve and gas pipe forming a center anchor for holding the device in central position during the drilling operation. Inasmuch as the size of the pipe may vary, the sleeve is made of an internal diameter substantially the same as the external diameter of the smaller size gas pipes and of an external diameter substantially the same as the external diameter of the larger size gas pipes. In case the larger size of. gas pipe is encountered the sleeve is removed and the pipe allowed to project down in the tube 10.
What is claimed as new is 1'. A drill comprising a shank, a head removably mounted on said shank and including a plurality of radial ways formed in its upper face, knives adjustable in certain of said ways, and-knife carriers adjustable in other of said ways.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a tubular shank having one end formed into an engaging element, a knife head seated on the other end of said shank and comprising a plurality of radial ways, knives adjustably seated in certain of said ways, a sleeve seated in said head and formed with a shoulder for engagement with said head, and a center point member seated in said sleeve and formed with a shoulder cooperative with the shouldered end of said sleeve.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a tubular shank having one end formed into an engaging element, a knife head seated on the other end of said shank and comprising a plurality of radial ways, knives adjustably seated in certain of said ways, a sleeve seated in said head and formed with a shoulder for engagement with said head, a center point member seated in said sleeve and formed with a shoulder cooperative with the shouldered end of said sleeve, anda screw for securing sleeve and center point member in adjusted position with relation to said head.

A device of the class described comprising a shank, a cutting head reinovably secured to said shank, a bowl slidably mounted on said shank, a spring for securing said bowl in adjusted position on said shank, and a housing for said spring and secured to said bowl so as to form a finger piece for moving said bowl. 7

A device of the class described comprising a shank, a cutting head removably secured to said shank, a sleeve slidable on said shank, a bowl secured to said sleeve, a spring for securing said bowl in adjusted position on said shank, and a housing for said spring and threadedly engaging said sleeve as and for the purpose set forth.
