.COMIBINED CRIB AND WARDROBE.
Specification 01' Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 20, 1921.
Application filed November 26, 1920. Serial No. 426,538.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known-that I, FRANK W. MUssE-L- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jack son and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Cribs and Wardrobes, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to furniture, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a combined babys crib and wardrobe, the' parts thereof being so associated with each other, as to form a compact structure, so'that a minimum amount-of space will be occupied thereby, and to eliminate pf providing separate pieces of furniture'for a 'bab s requisites.
Another object o the invention is to provide an improved baby crib having a ward robe built therein, and arranged to occupy the space under the usual spring and mattress, which is usually left as waste space, the crib havingan improved movable side panel arranged to slide under the spring and over the top of the wardrobe portion so as to be out of the way of the wardrobe during the use thereof, so that the convenient actuation of the drawers may be had, the movable panel being so associated with the crib that the accidental jarring loose thereof, which sometimes occurs in the ordinary crib structure is prevented, thus insuring full protection for the baby at all times.
A further object of the invention is to provide a-combined baby crib and wardrobe, which has a novel type of drawer associated therewith, the drawer being adapted to slide outwardly of the crib and wardrobe and so constructed that the tipping thereof is eliminated, the drawer having a novel type of cover or top which prevents the seeping of dust from the mattress therein, the top or cover also forming a support or table for receiving the babys bath bowl during the washing of the baby, 01' a support to lay the baby upon during the drying operation. I
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved crib or wardrobe of the above character, which will be durable and efiicient in use, one that will be simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formationof parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanymg drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which drawin s:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved combined crib and wardrobe.
Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the movable panel in its lowered position and ready to be slid under the mattress and above the wardrobe portion.
Fig. 3' is a transverse vertical section through the improved crib and wardrobe, illustrating the position of the sliding guide carried by the movable panel when the panel is in its raised locked osition.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged ragmentary vertical section through a portion of the crib and wardrobe illustrating the raised position of the guide for the movable panel when the movable panel is in its lowered position ready to he slid into the crib.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical longitudinal section through the crib and wardrobe taken on the line 55 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of the crib showing one of the drawers of the wardrobe pulled out and the improved cover for the drawer which eliminates the seeping of dust from the mattress into the drawer.
v Fig. 7 is a fragmentary perspective View of the crib showing the other drawer of the wardrobe in its open position.
Fig. 8 is an enlarged fragmentary side .elevation of. one upper corner of the crib.
illustrating the means of connecting the upper endof the movable panel to one of v the corner posts, the partly in section, and V I Fig. 9 is a fragmentary end elevation of the movable panel, showing the plate car- 'ried by the up er rail thereof for engaging the pin carried by the corner post, the pin in this view being shown in section.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A indicates the improved crib and wardrobe, which includes the corner posts 10, the longitudinal side rails 11,. the end panels 12 and 13, and the side panels 14 and 15. The sideand end panels are, as shown, of the slat and rail construction, although any other desired construction may be had without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention,
panel being shown and the side panel 14 is movably associated with the other portions of the crib as will be hereinafter more fully described.
One side rail 11 is secured to the lower rail of the side panel 15, while the other side rail 11, has its terminals secured to the end posts 10 on the opposite side of the crlb, and these rails 11 are adapted to support the transversely extending bed slats 16, which support the bed spring 17, in the usual manner. The bed spring 17 may be of any desired make or construction and has arranged thereon, in the usual manner, the mattress 18. The mattress 18 is confined between the end panels 12 and 13 and the side panels 14 and 15.
Directly below the panels 12, 13. 14 and 15 is arranged end pieces or walls 20, and side pieces or walls 21 and 22. The wall 21 forms the front portion of the wardrobe. As shown, the end pieces or walls 20 and the side wall or piece 22 are rigidly connected to the lower ends of the panels 12, 13 and 15, while the side piece or wall 21 is merely secured to the end posts 10 on that side of the crib. These end and side pieces or walls are formed relatively narrow so as not to destroy the appearance of symmetric outline of the crib. so that the same will always appeal to the esthetic taste of the buyer. The side piece or wall 21 is provided with a relatively large opening 23 and a relatively small opening 24, through which drawers 25 and 26 are adapted to slide. These drawers 25 and 26 are slidably supported by guide bars 27 which extend transversely of the crib.
If so desired these guide bars 27 may carry an end stop 28 so as to limit the inward movement of the drawers. Each of the drawers 25 and 26 are provided with hand pulls 29 and 30 respectively.
Referring to the movable side panel 14 which is so constructed as to permit the same to be moved to facilitate the easy placing of a baby in the crib and to be out of the way of the drawers when in this position, the
' same includes the top rail 31, the lower rail 32 and the'connecting slats 33. The lower rail 32 has connected thereto, by means of hinges 34, the slidin end guides These end guides 35 are ormed relatively short, and are adapted to normally rest in a cut out portion 36 formed in transversely extending guide bars or tracks 37, which are preferably secured to the end pieces or walls 20. The lower rails 38 of the end panels 12 and 13 are also provided with a lower inner edge rabbeted as at 39 for the reception of the slide guiding bars 35 when the same are moved out of the cut out portion 36 of the guide bars or tracks 37 as will be hereinafter more specifically described. The lower surface of the sliding guide bars 35 have secured adjacent to their inner edges and at their forward ends, stop blocks 40, which are adapted to engage the inner surface of the Side piece or wall 21, when the movable panel 14 is in its lowered 13051131011 and the guide bars 35 in their raised position for permitting the sliding back of the side panel 14. The terminals of the upper rail 31 ot' the movable side panel 14 are recessed as at 41 and receive plates 42, which are provided with bayonet slots 43. These plates 42 are secured in any preferred manner to the upper rail 31. The bayonet slots 43 in the plates 42 are adapted to receive headed pins 41, which are carried by the end posts 10 on one side of the crib adjacent to their upper ends. Owing to the nature of the bayonet slots, it can be seen that to lower the side panel 14, it is necessary to raise the same a certain distance before the panel can be swung downwardly on its hinges 34. This absolutely precludes the accidental falling of the panel which some: times happens in the usual construction of cribs in which the sliding panels thereof are held in a raised position by movable locks or do s.
Tn operation of this panel, the saiie is first raised upwardly, so as to move the headed pins 44 from out of the slots 43, after which the panel is swung downwardly on the hinges 34. As the panel is first raised, the guide and bars will be raised therewith, which will permit the swinging of this panel. \Vhen the panel is swung to its lowermost position, the forward end thereof is pushed downwardly, which will further raise the end guide bars 35 out of the cut out portion 36 of the bars 37, after which the panel and its guide end bars 35 may be slid inwardly into the crib below the spring 17 and above the drawers of the wardrobe. Stopblocks 45 may be. carried by the guide bars 37 so as to limit the inward sliding movement of the panels beyond a predetermined point. Thus it can be seen that the panel maybe slid out of the way of the bed and above the wardrobe so as to permit the convenient use of the drawers thereof.
The drawer 25 is primarily intended for receiving the babys wearing apparel, while the drawer 26 is formed relatively narrow and is adapted to receive the babys toilet articles and it is preferred that a sliding tray 50 be mounted upon guides 51 carried by the side walls of this drawer and this tray is adapted to hold soap, talcum powder and the like for the baby, and can be moved back and forth so as to permit the convenient removal of other articles in the drawer.
To prevent the seeping of dust, dirt and the like, into the relatively large drawer 25, a hinged cover or top 52 is provided for the same, and as shown, this top is connected to a side strip 53, carried by the upper edge of the drawer, and this top wall is adapted to lie flush with the upper surface of the same.
A strip 54 is secured to the upper edge of the rawer at the rear edge thereof, and this forms a relatively wide bearing face for engaging the side piece or wall 21, which grevents the tipping over of the drawer. ot only does the top or cover 52 form a protection against the entrance of dirt or the like into the drawer, but also forms a su port or table for the baby, or the babys washbowl, during the washing of the baby.
From the foregoing description, it can be seen that an exceptionally simple and durable combined piece of furniture has been provided, which will absolutely take care of all of the babys requisites and eliminates the necessity of providing separate pieces of furniture for each separate need of the baby.
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of this invention; but what I claim as new is:
1. In infants furniture, a combined crib and wardrobe including corner posts, side and end panels carried by the corner posts, a spring and mattress carried by the corner posts, side and end pieces carried by the corner posts and arranged below the side and end panels, one of the side pieces having drawers slidably associated therewith, guide bars arranged transversely of and below the spring and mattress, end guide bars mounted on said guides, means hingedly connecting the lower end of one of the side panels to said end guide bars, means for permitting a limited upward movement of the end,
guide bars, and means for detachably looking the upper end of the mentioned guide panel to certain of the corner posts.
2. In an infants furniture. a combined crib and Wardrobe comprising corner posts, side and end panels, a spring and mattress carried by the corner posts, side and end pieces carried by the corner posts and arranged below the side and end panels, one
of said panels being movably associated with the other panels and posts and including upper and lower rails, and connecting slats, tie lower edge of said lower rail being adapted to normally engage the upper edge of one of the side pieces, end guide bars hingedly connected to the lower rail of the mentioned side panel and arranged to normally engage the lnner surface of the mentioned side piece, upper and lower guide tracks arranged to receive the end guide bars and mentioned side panel therebetween, the lowermost tracks having cut out portions arranged to normally receive the end guide bars, the upper guide bars being rabbeted to receive the end guide bars, when the same are raised out of the cut-out portions, the upper end of certain of the corner posts being provided with headed pins, and plates carried b the terminals of the u per rail of the mentioned side panel having ayonet slots formed therein arranged to receive said headed pins, said headed pins and slots being so arranged in relation to each other that to permit of swinging movement of the mentioned panel the said panel has to be raised, as and for the purpose specified.
3. A combination piece of furniture comprising a wardrobe and a bed formed thereabove, side and end panels for the bed, one of the panels being movable in relation to the other panels and arranged for sliding movement above the wardrobe, guides slidable above the wardrobe, means pivotally connecting the lower end of the movable panel with the guides, a bayonet slot and pin connection for the movable panel, and means for permitting a limited lateral movement of the sliding guides to permit the actuation of the bayonet slot and pin connection.
