UNITED STATES PATENT OFF-ICE.

Application filed August 25, 1920. Serial 170. 405,907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. GEBHARDT, a citizen of. the United States, and residing at Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certam new and useful Improvements in Sleds, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to sleds or what I call push sleds or sleds adapted, when in use, to be pushed over a snow covered surface but which are adapted to be drawn over said surface or used in the manner of an ordinary sled in coasting, if desired; and the ob ect of the invention is to provide a sled of the class specified with stationary runners and with adjustable or steering runner; a further object being to provide an ad ustable handle member by means of WhlCh the sled may be pulled'over a surface and which also serves to operate the adjustable steering runners; and a still further 0b]ect being to provide a sled of the class spec fied with feet receiving recesses or apertures into which the feet of the operator may be placed and which are designed to prevent the slipping of the feet on the sled, or the body portion thereof; and with these and other objects in view the invention conslsts n a device of the class and for the purpose spec1- fied which is simple in construction and operation and efficient in use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in whlch the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference charactersin each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan View of my improved sled 2 a side view thereof with part of the construction broken away and in section' Fig. 3 a partial section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 a partial section on the l1ne 44 of Fig. 1; and,
Fig. 5 a partial section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
My improved sled comprises a main body portion or platform 6 which is oblong and approximately rectangular in form, and the front end portion 7 of which is preferably of less transverse dimensions than the rear end portion 8. The body portion 6 is provlded forwardly of the rear end portion 8 thereof w1th two feet receiving recesses 0r apertures 9 adapted to receive the feet of the operator, and these recesses 0r apertures are formed by depressing the body portion 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing but it will be understood that send depressions may be formed in any desired manner.
Secured to the rear end portion 8 of the frame6 are two runners 10 which are located at the opposite sides of said frame and are reinforced by V-shapedbrace members 11 secured to the frame 6. The front end portion 7 of the frame 6 is ra sed to a slight extent as shown at 12 and 1s prov ded with an upwardly directed bearing 13 1n which a shaft 14 is mounted. The lower end portion of the shaft 14 is secured to a supplemental frame member 15 rotatably mounted beneath the front portion 7 of the main frame 6 and spaced therefrom by an enlarged collar portion 16 on the shaft 14.
The supplemental frame member 15 is approximately rectangular in form and secured'to the bottom face thereof are two runners 17 reinforced .by V-shaped brace members 18, which are also secured to said frame member.
Adjustably mounted on the upper end portion of the shaft 14 is a handle member 19 provided at its upper end with a handpiece 20 and at its lower end with a forked head 21, the side members 22 of which are provided with elongated apertures 23, in which a pin 24, secured transversely of and to the shaft 14, operates. The forked head Specification of Letters Patent. Patent d S t. 20 1 2 21 is provided on opposite sides with downwardly directed extensions 25 which form a recess or aperture 26 in the head 21 in which the upper end of the shaft 14 rests in the position of the handle member 19 shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2, and this construction serves to rigidly support the handle member in a vertical position. By resting the handle member 19 on the shaft 14 so that the downwardly directed extensions 25 clear the upper end of said shaft said handle member may be swung forwardly or backwardly as may be desired, and the forward movement thereof is indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawing. In this position of the handle member the sled may be drawn by said handle mem-t operator places one foot withm one of the recesses or apertures 9 and one or both hands upon the hand iece 20 of the handle member and the ot er foot is used to push the sled over. the ground until suflicient progress is made to enable the operator to place said other foot within the other recess or apertnre 9 and proceed to coast over the ground until the sled comes to a stop, after which the above operation may be repeated. By reason of the adjustabihty of the front .or steering runners 17 the push sled may be guided over the ground, turned around corners and the like by sim ly rotating the handle member 19 in the direction at which 'it is desired to turn. i t
It will also be ap arent, however, that while I have descri ed my invention as particularly designed for use as a push sled,
the same may be used in coasting down hills in which use theoperator may sit or stand made, within the sec e of the appendedclaims, without departing from the spirit of 111%{1I1Y6I1t1011 or sacrificin avm fully describe my inventlon, what I c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:- s
its advantages.
A sled Jof the class described involving main body or platform portion havingcountersunk feet receiving recesses or receptacles. v
.In testimony that I claim the-foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in the presence of the subscribing witnesses this 24th day of August, 1920.
EDWARD J .GEBHARDT.
