To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, VVAL'rnn J. HAUSMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting -Machines, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to typewriting machines of the kind shown in the Hart Patout No" 1,281,160, dated Uetoher '8, 1.918. In said patent, there is disclosed. a typewriter carriage including a tally-strip device adapted to be driven by the line-spacing mechanism which serves to rotate the type writer platen. In said patent; the tallystrip mechanism shown is adapted to be disconnected from the line-spacing mechanism, with the result that the tally-strip remains idle while the line-space mechanism is actuatedfl According to the present invention, there may be provided a shield. adapted to be iii-- terposed between a worh-sheet and the carbon sheet to prevent typed impressions upon the outer sheet from appearing as carbon impressions upon. the inner sheet. To advance the platen for line-spacing operations, there is fast on the axle of the platen. a line-space wheel 18 adapted to he engaged by the usual pawl 19*, pivoted on the usual. slide 20, so that when. the usual line space lever 21 is actuated, the rearward movement of the slide ElO will cause the pawl 19 to turn the platen to an extent dependent upon the position. of the usual adjustable lever 22, The work-sheet 12 is held upon the platen 13 by releasable feed -rolls 223, between. which is adapted to run a tally-strip sheet 24 drawn. from a supply spool 25, passed around the platen. and wound. upon a winding spool F246. These spools are found in certain kinds of Underwood typewriting' machines, and are more fully described in said patent, being" iournaled in plates 27 mounted upon a shaft 28 and acros -liar 28 which, in turn, are carried upon brackets 29 fast to the cover plates 30 of the shift frame,

finger-piece 38 journaled upon the shaft 28 pinion 36 is thus moved clear of the pinion 37, the winding spool 26 remains idle at the actuation of the-line-space lever 21.
In order to prevent the superposed writing of characters by the carbon paper 42 upon the tally-strip 24, which would otherwise occur if the tally-strip were notedvanced at the advance of the work-sheet 12, there is provided a shield 43 which may advantagously take the form of a sheet of paper clipped to a ball 44, which is connected to the front ends of the arms 45, journaled upon a cross-bar 46,-forming part of the usual Underwood shift frame. The bail 44 is herein shown as held to the arms 45 by screws 47, and, for steadiness, the arms 45 may have arched-over rear ends 48, having two bearings 49 on the bar 46. To keep the shield from moving sidewise, clips 50, fast to the shaft 46, may lie against the ends 48. The shield 43 may be controlled by the finger-piece 38, and, for this purpose, the handle 51 of the finger-piece may be in the form of a shouldered screw having a knurled head, so that a link 52 may be pivoted thereto and swing freely, and have its lower end pivoted at 53 to one of the arms45. The connections are such that when the finger piece 38 is drawn" forward, the shield 43 swings down between the carbon sheet 42 and the worksheet 12 to the point seen in Fig. 4, where it appears extending below the printing point at the ribbon 14., The handle 51 may be detained in this position by a depression 54, which co'ciperates with the end 55 of the rod 40 as a detent. The bottom extension 56 of the handle hub may bear against the end 55 with a little friction, and thus hold the finger-piece in its upper position, in which it holds the shield 43 above the printing point, as seen at Fig. 3. It is found that a sheet of paper no heavier than good type-writing; paper will be found to make a satisfactory shield 43, although other paper or other material may be employed;
To hold the sheet or shield 43 upon the bail 44, a ill-shaped clip 57, in theform of a piece of resilient sheet-metal, may embrace scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a printing type and a platen, of
a tally strip device, a shield adapted to be interposed between the tally strip and I a carbon sheet, a line-space device for the platen, a connection from the line-space device to drive the tally strip, and a connection from the shield adapted to make the line space connection ineffective when the shield is effective.
2. In a typewriting machine. the combination with a platen and a platen frame, of a printing type, a tally strip support in said frame, a shield adapted to be interposed between the tally strip and a carbon sheet. arms journaled in said frame and carrying said shield, a line-space device for the platen, a connection from said device adapted to drive the strip, means for silencing said connection, and means operated by said silencing means for moving said shield from a normally ineffective position to its effective position.
In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen and a platen frame. of a printing type, a tally strip support in said frame, a bail comprising arms journaled in said frame and extending on both sides of the tally strip, and a clip upon said bail adapted to hold a shield thereon, so that the shield may be interposed between the strip and a carbon sheet.
4. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen and a platen frame, of a printing type, a tally-strip-support in said frame, a bail comprisingarms journaled in said frame and extending on both sides of the tally-strip, a clip upon said ball adapted to hold a shield thereon, so that the shield may be interposed between the strip and a carbon sheet, a line-space-de'rice for the platen adapted to also actuate the tally-strip-support, a shaft forming part of said support, and a finger-piece adapted to simultaneously silence said shaft and make the shield effective.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen and a platen-frame, of a printing type, a tally-strip-feed device sin ported in said frame, a shield supported for movement to and from a position at the printing line between the tally-strip and a .llll

6. A shield adapted to be interposed between a carbon sheet and a work-sheet comprising a pa er body, a flat bar -on which the body is olded, and a folded metal clip adapted to fit over'the paper on the bar.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a printing ty e and a platen, of adevice for feeding a tal y-strip around the platen, a movable shield supported so as to lie between-the tally-strip and a carbonsheet beneath a work-sheet on the platen, a line-space device for the platen, means whereby the tallystrip-feed device will normally be driven upon actuation of the linespace device, and means for concomitantly rendering said last-mentioned means ineffective and moving the shield to a position between the tallyrstrip and the carbonsheet at the printing line.
10. In a typewritmg machine,-the combination with a platen and a platen-frame, of a printing 7 type, a tally-strip device for feeding .a tally-strip around saidplaten, said device belng mounted in said frame,
a bar extending across said tally-strip-feed device so as to lie between the tally-strip and a work-sheet overlying the tally-strip and supported by the platen, supporting means for said bar adapted to permit movement thereof toward and from the printing line and a cli upon said bar adapted to hold a shield t ereon so that the latter may be interposed at the printing line between the tally-strip and a carbon-sheet underlying the work-sheet.
