Be it known that I, Enron EDELMANN, a
citizen of the United States, residing atv Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Hose-Coue -plings, of which the following is a 'specification.
My invention relates to a hose coupling adapted to be employed for establishing communication, for example, between a source of air supply and a pneumatic tire which is to be inflated, the device being arranged so as to operate automatically to shut oit the air when it is removed from the tire nipple. The main object of my `invention is to simplify and improve the construction of a device of this character so that any tendency for the air to leak out between its parts will be reduced to a minimum.
rlhe invention consists of the novel and improved constructions, arrangements and devices for carrying out the above stated object and such othenincidental objects as will appear from the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a preferred' Jform of hose coupling embodying the principles of my invention;

The hose coupling comprises a hollow body or casing 10, preferably cylindrical, which is closed at the bottom by means of suitable devices, to be hereinafter described, 'for controlling the supply ot air, thus providingiwithin the casing a, chamber 11. A,
nipple 12 is formed integrally with the caC- ing, ore'terably entendra outwardly at right anges 'from one side thereoi, and is pro vided with a longitudinal bore 13 which communicates with the chamber 11. The nipple is provided preferably with two sets of external ridges 14, the outer set being of lesser diameter than the other set so that the nipple will accommodate hoses of different diameter, the hose`15 shown on the drawing being of the larger diameter, the outer end thereof being attached to an air pump or a source of air supply under pressure, not shown.
The bore of the casing preferably is enlarged in diameter for a short distance up from the bottom thereof to provide' a shoulder 16, the walls of the casing below this shoulder being provided e with internal threads 1T and external threads 1S. A bushing 19 provided with external threads adapted to engage with the threads 17 on the casing is inserted within the casing and turned so as to seat tightly against the flange 20 formed on the shoulder 16 whereby a tight joint is provided at this point. This bushing is provided with a trustoconical boss 21, a vertical passageway 2Q extending therethrough. The top of the bushing is smoothed o to form a seat for the valve Q3 which is provided with a hollow stem 211, there being a port in the side of the stem under the valve which establishes communication between the .chamber 11 and thehollow stern when the valve is raised as shown in Fig. 2. Preferably a resilient washer or ring 2G is pressed into a groove formed in the under side of the valve so as to prevent leakage of air between the valve and the valve seat, -A depending boss Q7 may be formed on the casing 10 to limit the upward movement of the valve. The cap 28 is provided with internal threads adapted to engage 'with the threads 18 formed on the casing and is provided with the perforation Q9 which is in alinement with the passageway 22 in the bushing 19. A resilient washer is interposed between the bushing 19 and the cap 29. rlhis washer is formed with a base 31 and a trusteconical head 3Q and is provided with a vertical passage Yay which is adapted to receive the end ot the nipple 34 attached to a tire. The top of the base 31 of the washer nts snugly into an annular groove 35 formed in the bottom of the bushing 19 andwhen the cap 28 is screwed into place the annular iiange 36 formed thereon bears against the bottoni of the washer and an air-tight joint is thus provided between these parts. The botrsnr Yori-facetr ico nipple' which raises the valve to the position shown in Fig. Q and when the valve is in this position air may pass freely from the chamber ll. through the port 25. downwardly through the hollow stem Q4, through the tire nipple and thence into the tire. The external diameter of the tire nipple being somewhat larger than the internal diameter ot' the passageway 33 of the washer 30 insures a close tit between these parts and prevents leakage of air therebetween while the tire is being inflated. The washers 26 and 2,50 are the only parts' subjected to wear and these may be conveniently replaced if they should become worn.

A hose coupling of the class described comprising a chambered casing member open at the l ttoni and provided witha tubular nipple, a bushing member tightly tted into the bottom of said casing and having a truste-conical portion projecting upwardly to form a valve seat, a valve adapted to bear on the top of said seat, a` hollow stem for said valve, a perforated cap adapted to engage one of said members, and a resilient washer interposed between said bushing and said cap, said valve stem prothreads adjacent the bottom thereof, a metal bushing havingexternal threads adapted to engage the internal vthreads formed on said casing and having a frusto-conical portion projecting upwardly to form a valve seat, a valve adapted to bear on the top of said seat, a hollow stem for said valve, a perforated cap having threads adapted to engage the external threads of said casing, and a resilient washer, interposed between said bushing and said Cap, said valve stein projecting through the conical portion of said bushing and depending into the perforation in said washer and having a port through one side underneath the valve whereby said port will be uncovered when the valve is raised by the upward thrust of the tire nipple into the perforation in said washer thereby establishing communication between' the chamber in said casing and the tire nipple.

A hose coupling of the class described comprising a cylindrical casing open at the bottom and provided with a tubular nipple, said casing' having an internal annular shoulder and having internal and external threads adjacent the bottom thereof, a metal bushing having external threads adapted to engage the internal threads formed on said casing and to bear against said shoulder, said bushing having a. frustoconical portion projecting upwardly to form a valve seat, a. valve provided with a resilient washer on its under side adapted to bear on the top of said seat, a hollow stem for said valve, a perforated cap having threads adapted to engage the external threads on said casing, and a resilient washer interposed between said bushing and said cap, said washer having a perforation adapted to receive the tire nipple, said valve stem projecting through the conical portion ot' said bushing into the perforation in said washer andhaving a port through one side underneath the valve whereby said port will be uncovered when the valve is raised by the upward thrust of the tire nipple into the perforation of said washer thereby establishing communication between the chamber in said casing and the tire nipple.
