Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 31, 19210 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAURICE LAGHMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Wheels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the construction and method of manufacturing metal wheels having rim and spokes integral with one another and more particularly relates to wheels of this character constructed from a section or length of flanged mjetal bar, one flange or head of which forms the rim while the spokes consist of sections or sub-divisions of the web.
In carrying out my invention I prefer to employ a flanged metal bar of I form in cross-section.
The invention consists essentially in constructing the wheel from a section or length of I bar or similar form. of bar, one head of which is bent to form a continuous rim of the wheel while the spokes integral with said head consist of sub-divisions of the web and the opposite head or flange, said subdivided head or flange serving as a means for attaching or securing the spokes to the hub structure.
In carrying out my invention I may use the ordinary shape of I beam or bar or may use a specially rolled bar having any desired modified form of cross-sectional shape chosen with reference to the general purposes of the invention.

1 indicates the web of the I beam or bar and 2 2' the T heads thereof. To prepare the same for constructing the wheel, a suitable length of bar adapted to embrace by one head, as for instance head 2, the circumference of the rim or any desired arc of the same, is taken and the web and opposite head are subdivided into spokes 3 of any desired number and shape. The blank as thus prepared and without further change may be bent as to its head 2 into the circumference of the rim and the spokes at their ends 2' caused to converge in the hub where they may be secured by the head 2 in any suitable way to the hub or hub structure as for instance directly to the outer periphery of a metal hub shell 5. Assuming however that it is desired to utilize the I beam or bar in the special form of wheel illustrated in Fig. 5, wherein the spokes are disposed alternately at opposite ends of the hub structure and are oblique to the plane of the wheel to give added strength against side strain, the flange or projection forming one side of the head 2 is removed but at opposite sides of the spokes in alternation and the spokes bent alternately out of the plane of the web to bring them into the relation shown in Fig. 5 and dispose the flanges of all of them over the periphery of the hub and in symmetrical relation thereto.
4 indicates the hub barrel and 5 a suitable hub shell or hub body which is of metal and is suitably secured to the hub barrel in the usual way by a flange, clamping plates and bolts as clearly indicated. The. hub ends of the spokes being disposed with the flanges or sectionof head engaged with the periphery of the hub or hub shell are secured thereto in any desired manner as for instance by welds formed as indicated at 6. Should it be desired to construct the wheel without any staggering and obliquity of spokes to the general plane of the wheel, it is obvious that both flanges of the head 2 could be employed for attachment of the spokes to the hub. The angle of cut at the edge '1 where the converging spoke ends meet in-the hub, should such meeting be desired, obviously would be changed accordin to the number of spokes.
at I claim as my invention is 1. A metal wheel formed of a section of flanged metal bar havin both edges flanged, one edge having a T head constitutin a continuous rim of the wheel while the spo ee of a section of I bar olne head of which constitutes the rim while the subdivided web and opposite head constitute spokes.
3. In a metal wheel, a continuous rim and spokes integral therewith and formed of an I bar one head of which constitutes the rim while the spokes consist of subdivisions of the web and opposite head combinedwith a hub structure upon whose periphery the subdivisions of the latter head are seated and secured.
4. A metal wheel consisting of an I bar one head of which is bent to form a rim while the web and opposite head are subdivided into spokes bent alternately to opposite sides of the plane of the web and secured to the hub by portions thereof formed of subdivisions of the head.
5. In a metal wheel, a' continuous rim and s okes integral therewith and formed of a anged metal bar having a flange at each of its opposite edges, one flange constituting the rim while the spokes consist of sub-divisions of the web and opposite flange combined with a hub' structure to which the sub-divisions of the latter flange are secured.
