UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERNEST VT. BAXTER, OF VAN WERT, OHIO.
GOVERNOR FOR GAS-ENGINES.
Application filed. December 17, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatl, ERNEST WV. BAXTER, a citizen of the United States of America, and residentof-Van WVert, in thecounty of Van Wert and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Governors for Gas-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in governors for gas engines and the object thereof is to provide means for regulating the admission of fuel to the engine either through the throttle or by interrupting the action of its exhaust valve, or both, so that the action of the engine may be maintained closely at a predetermined velocity though subjected to loads varying widely in char acter.
The object of the improvement is accomplished by the construction illustrated in the.
accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gas engine with a portionthereof broken away.
and showing the. invention in connection therewith; and
Fig. '2 is a plan view of the same showing a part thereof broken away and in section.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts-in both views and having reference now to the. same:
1 is the bed of the engine upon which is supported the crank shaft 2, 3 is the engine cylinder, and 4 and 5 are fly wheels respectively mounted upon the corresponding opposite ends of the crank shaft. 6 is a back gear actuated by a pinion 7 on the crank shaft, the back gear being provided with a cam 8 adapted to actuate the push bar 9. A lever 10 is pivotally mounted at the rear end of the cylinder 3 and is adapted to be actuated by the push bar 9 so as to open the ex haust valve 11 periodically as the engine rotates in the customary manner. A governing means comprising a pair of weighted levers 12 are pivotally supported in connection with the fly wheel 5 and each has engagement with a grooved sleeve 13 that is loosely mounted on the crank shaft adjacent the fly wheel so that as the weighted levers spread apart the sleeve is moved longitudinally.
A rocking member 14: is pivotally mounted upon a bracket- 15 that projects from the side of the bed 1 and has engagement at its forward end with the grooved sleeve 13 so as to be oscillated thereby as the latter is moved longitudinally upon the crank shaft Specification of Letters'latent.

by the weighted levers. The rear end of the rocking member 14 haspivotedthereon a detent member lt" whichis adapted to be shifted into the pathof a stop 16- that is fixed upon thepush bar 9 so thatthe latter will be detained in its outer position when thus engaged and the exhaust valve'conse-:
quently held open. The rocking-.inember has an outwardly extending arm 17 through which loosely. extends a throttle rod 18, there being a threadedadjusting sleeve 19 on the rod that bears against the adjacent face of the arm 17. The opposite end of the throttle rod has connection with a crank20 which actuates the throttle valve 21. A bracket 22 extends from the side of the engine cylinder and has a threaded adjusting sleeve 23 extending therethrough, and-uponthe throttle rod 18 is a fixed fiangefl, there being a compressionspring 25 arranged interveningly between theflange 24 and the forward endof the adjusting sleeve 23,-the action of the spring being suchthat the throttle valve tends to open for the admission of fuel into the engine: cylinder.-
As a means of throwing the detent member out of action it is formedwith a transverse slot 26 in its forward end througlnwhich a binding screw 27 extends and which engages in the rockingmember =so-that thedetent' member may be adjustably turned upon its pivot 28 and, secured in relation therewith. Thus when so desired, the detent member may be positioned out of the path of the stop 16 so that as the engine operates. the exhaust valve will not be interrupted. Also the crank 20 of the throttle-valve has a set-screw 29 which may be loosened so that the crank actuates without affecting the throttle valve, and a slotted segment 30 has fixed connection with the throttle valve and is adapted to be held in adjusted positions by a clamp screw 31 so that the throttle valve may be set at any desired degree of opening.
In the operation of the invention the engine is governed by the dual mechanism, one phase of which is based upon the hit and miss principle and the other operating upon the throttle principle, both of which have been separately established in the art. In the present invention a mechanism is employed involving the employment of both of these principles in cooperative relationship. In this manner the engine does not receive a full charge of fuel when idling which generally occurs in engines having Patented-May 3, 1921.
only the hit and miss governor and which .causes a violent acceleration in the velocity fuel is admitted in charges that vary in quantity proportionate to the varying load of the engine and only when running at or below its normal velocity.
An especial feature of the invention is the provision for independently throwing out of action the detent member and the throttle, so that by makingsimple adjustments the engine may be arranged to be governed by either the hit and miss or by the throttle principle without interfering with the other. This is desirable especially when the engine is used for driving various loads which differ in extent of resistance and constancy.
What I claim is 1. In a governor for gas engines having a throttle-valve and exhaust valve, the combination of a governing mechanism of the hit and miss type for the exhaust valve, and a governing mechanism of the throttle type for the throttle-valve, arranged in cooperative relation with the former mechanism, each I governing mechanism'being adapted to be independently thrown out of action.
2. In a governor for gas-engines having a throttle-valve and exhaust valve and mechanism for actuating the exhaust valve, a governing member, a rocking member actuated by the governing member; a detent member adjustably mounted in connection with the rocking member adapted to interrupt the actuating member; means in connection with the rocking member for actuating the throttle valve, said detent member and throttle valve actuating means each being adapted to be independently thrown out of action; and means for adjustably setting the throttle valve.
3. In a governor for gas engines having a throttle valve and exhaust valve, the combination of a governing means; a hit and miss mechanism actuated by the governing means adapted to. interrupt the exhaust valve; a throttle mechanism actuated by the governing means for automatically actuating the throttle; means in connection with the hit and miss mechanism for throwing the same out of action; means for independently throwing the throttle mechanism out of action; and means for securing the throttle valve adjustably in position.
4:. In a governor for gas engines having a throttle valve and exhaust valve, a governing means including mechanism for automatically regulating the action of each of said valves; and means for adjusting said mechanism for independently throwing it out of regulating relation with either of'said valves.
In testimony whereof I ,aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
